not sure why all the poor ratings, this beer is absolutely fantastic. beautiful packaging and a beautiful pour, just blonde white with a huge fluffy head and some yeast floaters. smells like oranges, honey, spice, and yeast. taste is compelling for a wheat beer, complex and transfoming constantly. delicate flavors workin in concert, delicious. the mouthfeel makes this one for me, like drinking a cloud. so light and airy, but with enough carbonation to brighten things up. this is one of my favorite wheat beers, which we could get it here in the states...

First off, love the bottles. No judging a book by its cover but there's some very smooth packaging going on here. However, that usually leads me to expect the beer inside to be substandard which is not what I found here.

Pours quite flat for a hefe, even directly into the butcher there is no real head. Colour is a lovely yellow hue with a moderate amount of yeast haze.

Aroma is predominantly banana, I fancy with some dried fruit, possibly apricot. Flavour holds the same, with fairly low levels of clove. Carbonation on tongue is moderate to low, just enough for a light spritz on the tongue and fortunately sufficient to maintain a fresh drinkability without allowing the low bitterness to present a too-sweet beer.

Definitely worthwhile, I will be chasing down the other two moo brews as soon as I can.

A - Murky, very dark yellow colour. Few centimetres of white head that falls away very quickly.
S - Big banana aroma. Some light clove notes.
T - Banana and clove like the smell but also some wheat malt.
M - Medium bodied with a fairly high refreshing carbonation.
D - Nice drinkable hefe.

This beer pours a cloudy,light yellow hue with average carbonation that leaves a one finger head that doesnt hang around very long and no lacing to the eye either,the aroma is straight out strong bananna,cloves and some feint bubblegum,it has a nice medium mouthfeel to it which slides down ever so easily with that classic hefe bananna,wheat taste on the palette that leaves it wanting more,although not my best example of a HEFE very drinkable.

Good gosh, it's beer. I would like to humbly thank you, Lord, for providing something other than flavorless, skunky lagers for me to consume while in Australia.

Poured at "Beers of Oz" tasting in Hobart, TAS. A worthy (if slightly immature) effort in the "not-hefe" category. Very cloudy, bright lemon-yellow beer pours slightly viscous, with a pure white head. Yes, Virginia, there is yeast in the bottom of the bottle. Aroma of bread is very pronounced, along with the expected banana and hay. Also noted honey aroma and a (highly snobbish) touch of pineapple. Yes, I said pineapple.

Sweet, with a nice tang typical of upstart breweries trying to shake up the Teutonic mildness of hefes. Not as smooth or viscous as it appears.

Very nice over all. Also consumed this beer at Fish Frenzy on the Elizabeth Street Pier, Hobart, TAS. With fish and chips? Perfect.

I've tried the Moo Brew range before, but have decided to revisit it for the purpose of review. They're truly one of Australia's better brews, even if they aren't quite worth the high dollar values charged.

Presented by the pour is a cloudy cloudy yellow body with healthy foam-white head. It dissipates quickly, but doesn't distract from how appetising this wheat beer appears on a hot summers day.

Spice, bannana and bubblegum scents hit the nose first, and provide an interesting but forgettable aroma - it's very typical of this style of brew.

The flavour is much like the aroma, but yeast and malt is evident also. It's a well-rounded taste with enough complexity to have you analyzing with intrigue but not enough to confuse and overwhelm. Clove and sour lime is noticed and appreciated.

The beer is quite watery, but has a certain texture which suits the merky caramel appearance, and it slides down all too well. Definately refreshing, without going to the extremes of a crystal style brew.

Highly recommended, as is the entire range!

I had a 330ml bottle a while ago now but did not put in all my notes because I did not find the beer under Moo Brew. I think the brewery name should be updated.
Anyway I recall enjoying the beer very much. There were loads of banana fruit aroma and flavours to savour. Very enjoyable example.

(Served in a Weizen glass)

A- This beer has a dark story murky body like that of cider. There is a snow white head that fades almost as fast as it forms. There is a strong carbonation of big bubbles racing up the side of the glass.

S- This beer has a big aroma of smooth bubblegum and a hint of clove that finishes with a nice bitter noble hop nose.

T- The taste of big wheat berries comes through with a hint of banana and clove with a sour earthiness that increases as it warms. There is a faint fruit punch note that fades into the noble hop bitterness at the finish. Notes of caramel, nougat and cider come through in the malt flavors.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a big fizz in the finish. There is a slight watery texture as it warms.

D- The color is a bit strange and reminds me of dirty dishwater as I'm drinking it, but the hops are stronger than in most wheat beers and that is very nice. There is some good depth to the taste but there is some slight off flavors that seem to get in the way. This is an interesting twist on the style but it could use some refining.

Pours a yellow head with not much head or carbonation. Thin ring of lacing around the side of the glass. Nothing to shout from the rooftops about.

Has a soft marshmallow smell with a slight hint of herbs. Nice, and yeah, quite hefeweizen-y, really.

Has that classic hefe-style bubble gum character on the palate but it is dominated by hops both front and back palate. It's actually remarkably bitter for a hefe. Drinkable, certainly, but I wouldn't say it fits the style very well, there's not much apart from the hops. It doesn't help that the waiter who poured it for me had no idea how to pour beer and so just poured it without agitating the yeast so the cloudy appearance I only got when I chucked the last drops in my glass.

But still, it's a very pleasant beer to drink but it's not much of a hefeweizen and it's quite simplistic on the palate. Average.

Another fine brew from Moo Brew. Once again in their distictive packaging and artwork. I'm a little hesitant of Aussie made Hefe's. They're either all bananas and blow, or lack everything that makes them what they should be.

Poured a little slack for a heffe, even after swirling in the yeast. Nice colour, a plae yellow, with plenty of yeast in suspension, but a thin head.

Aroma is banana. Did I mention there was banana? Low levels of clove and a hint of apricot. Little to no whaetyness, and just a touch of yeastyness too.

Tasted (as others have mentioned) pretty much as it smelt. Bananas, clove, apricot, a hint of vanilla(?), and little wheat malt.

Nice, but it needs more complexity to hold me in.

I've found this beer rather inconsistent. I have drunk three times in the last week whilst on holiday in Tasmania. The first time it blew me away and I was making comparisons with Weihenstephaner, but the other two tastes were a complete disappointment.

On this last tasting, it poured a murky honey hue, with a quickly dissipating small head. Smell dominated by banana, not much spice. Similar with taste, although a lasting finish. It's still much closer to hefe style than other Australian wheat beers I've tried, but not as outstanding as my impression was the first time I drank it. Is my memory deceiving me?

I wonder if variation has resulted from poor storage - when I visited Moorilla Estate, they talked about how it must be kept cold due to not being pasturised, and drunk "when fresh", although I've only bought refrigerated bottles from places with a high turnover. I could not find a best before date on the bottle. I'm going to keep trying this beer again because I'm sure I wasn't mistaken in regarding this as a great beer when I first tried it.

Appearance: Spot on colour if it was a kristal weizen colour but its very light for a hefe, nice wafting carbonisation. Pretty decent head. Which dissipates to a thick foamy head with nice lacing. Was expecting a little more from a wheat beer. Some decent lacing.

Smell: Banana smells strong while it’s cool, as it warms up the coriander and cloves become more prevalent and the banana takes a back seat. Caramel malts. Piney hops. All the hallmarks of a nice wheat beer.

Taste/ Mouthfeel: Taste is quite dull. Not much remains of those great smells. Some spices and hop character is still there. Fresh wheat and malt mix. Quite strong carbonisation but the brew flows down smooth, the whole mix is quite thick down the throat. The aftertaste is much better. With that banana showing up again and some definite coriander. Just a touch of bitterness on the edges of the palate.

Drinkability/Overall: Easy to drink. Goes down easy on a hot day. A bit to watery when it comes to taste. Best Aussie Heffe ive found to date, easy.

From bottle, Pale yellow pour with a thin white head. Banana and spicy aromas, taste is cloves, yeasty, slightly bitter. Very enjoyable worth a try if you can get it.

Pours hazy pale amber with a large slowly fading head.
Nose shows loads of doughy wheat with plenty of cloves in the background. Very refreshing.
Flavours are dominated by more doughy wheat, but there's also an off-putting grainy note. Some grassy out-of-place hops are present, almost seeming skunky.
Body is watery with high carbonation.

Appearance - 2.5
A gentle pour completely fills my 500mL weizen glass with bubbly white foam. Let's try that again. A huge, loose head gradually reduces over a cloudy caramel coloured body.

Smell - 3.5
Not a particularly pleasant aroma; rather soapy with notes of clove, spice, a little citrus and apple. Soap nearly disappears with increased temperature, replaced by a little banana.

Taste - 3.0
Tart and refreshing with flavours of bready malt, lemon, clove and red apple, as well as an unwanted soapy character. Improves as it nears 10 degrees so don't drink it icy.

Mouthfeel - 3.0
Quite coarse in the mouth, lively carbonation. Lacks the creaminess of good examples of the style, but does become smoother with increased temperature.

Drinkability - 3.0
Not hard to drink, but fairly underwhelming and not something I'd come back to.

If you haven't got the message yet, this is not a beer to drink straight from the fridge. Not bad, but all in all a rather average hefeweizen.

After the pedestrian Moo Brew Belgo I had of pang of doubt as to whether or not I should even review this Moo Brew Wheat Beer as I am fast reaching my 400th review, however it's in my fridge door now waiting to be passed judgement on from my almighty taste buds, I guess there is no reason to let it go to waste. Besides I am a big believer in giving second chances (not third chances though, you only get two from me). So let's see now if Moorilla succeeds or squanders... or both [err, how will that work?].

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Weizen glass.

A: A pleasing cloudy lemon body with a thin white lacing on top. Stylistically it could do with more head [insert juvenile euphemism about "head" here] but the naturtrüb-ness of the body is great, it's like Hefeweizen version of pea soup in there.

S: Funky as bro! There is a huge rubber aroma going on in the glass, no doubt phenolics: A by-product of yeast, however the general desired phenolic aroma is clove or banana whereas this has gone a bit over the top with fresh sneaker smell, oh well, could still taste good.

T: Alright the flavour brings it back a little bit with some light Weizen banana and clove. There are also noticeable grassy hops (unusual for a Weizen) and the after taste has an artificial/chemical flavour - even though it is quite clearly a non-preservative brew... weird.

M: At least the feel of this brew sticks to the tried and true German formula - medium bodied with a light but creamy carbonation.

D: I think something went wrong with my beer, perhaps it re-fermented too many times in the bottle, whatever it was the result is way off the Weizen mark. Also when you're competing against the giants like Weihenstephaner or Schöfferhofer and you're charging more than they are - you better bring something damn hot to the table... I mean THE best Hefe an Australian brewer can make, otherwise you may as well not even brew Weizen at all.

Food match: The odd Lager/Weizen flavours would likely work best with seafood however it is hard to categorise a food match for a Weizen like this, normally though I would recommend German cuisine.

the long narrow neck ensures a turbulent pour. once settled into the three stooges mug, a large white frothy head appears. this settles after a minute to a covering lace.
the beer is more a cloudy light yellow and hazy than showing that usual hefe yeast sediment. checking the empty bottle shows that the sediment that is left behind is very fine.

the aroma came across as coriander spice at first. getting more a clove now, with not so much banana. i love me some banana in a hefe. some yeastiness as well.

taste seems to be missing some sharpness. plenty of spice and yeast character, but seems to come across fairly bland. might be a side effect of the mouthfeel which seems slightly slick.

overall, gets a bit boring after a while. there are plenty of great german wheats around but would like to try this again some time down the track.

Brief impressions from dinner (Pure South - Tassie themed restaraunt in Melb). Good nose with fruity notes and touches of corriander. Palate is mild, some fizz, light citrus notes. Impeccably packaged in a small balsamic vinegar style bottle. Needs to deliver a bit more.

A little concerned when I realise this costs six bucks for 330 ml... More than 500ml of a certain well known W beer from Germany that has cornered the market.

Pours alright, but where is the head?

Smells of bananas and cloves but a bit artificial.

Taste is also wheat and banana and clove but watered down. Carbonation is too light and it is watery in mouth.

Ok, so it's alright, but it is a pale imitation of what a Hef should be, and that seems to be the way with Aus brewers.... Shame. Down 0.5 for price point.

An Aussie Hefeweizen? Most interesting. Moorilla says that it's brewed as a traditional German Hefeweizen under the Purity Act of 1516, with malted barley, wheat, hops, yeast, and water. No preservatives; unpasteurized.

First, let's talk about bottle presentation. This is one sleek little bottle. But what about the contents? We poured this into a Hefeweizen glass, decanting properly by swirling in the yeast.
The legs are cloudy and dirty pale blonde--not overly attractive. Thin, white head leaves some lace. Fresh, yeasty aroma with powdery clove and banana pith. Light bodied and semi-crisp with prickly carbonation. Thin feel on the palate. Hints of banana emerge for a very light, pale malt sweetness, with clove and bubble gum notes following from the back until the end. Touch of nectarine-like tanginess. Plenty of wheat tannins and yeast notes--a bit too much at times--towards the finish and as the beer warms. Dry, grainy, tannic finish.

All of the banana and clove characters expected were present, but a bit mut- ed, which allowed the abundance of wheat and yeast to dirty up the experience and disrupt the flow of flavors. Adding a bit more of a malty backbone would definitely be an improvement. As it stands, it's a fairly mediocre offering.

Bottle: funky as! Great bottles, fantastic design, stylish label designs. Great!

Appearance: hazy light straw, but a little more watery-looking than a German wheat. Less head also, with big fluffy bubbles that leave some lacing, but little retention whatsoever.

Aroma: light banana and clove, but dominated by a somewhat harsh yeast aroma.

Taste: some of those cloves do come through, but the yeasts linger also. A bit awkward.

Mouth feel: far too carbonated for a wheat beer. Feels like a wheat beer crossed with a lager - poor combination.

Overall: not a great wheat beer at all - very awkward feel across the palate and taste is dominated by sour yeast flavours. At AU$105 a case (2012), this is a dead-set joke.

Very different to last review. This is a best by 9/4/2007.
Too brown & murky, caramel coloured.
Smell is yeasty & spicy...slight citrus note, but not very pleasant.
Tastes of ginger beer, yeast... not much hefe style (other than the yeastiness).
Very sedimented, too much... home brewy.

This beer got some good reviews in the press but I was unimpressed. It sure looks like a hefe with a pale straw colour and slight haziness. It even had nice banana/clove balance on the nose but it tasted pretty flat with a funny aftertaste that made me cringe. The back palate is very clovy and out of balance which spoils the flavour and ruins the beer. I found the mouthfeel thin and uninspiring. I'm also a bit alarmed at the trend for 4-packs which shits me as it smacks of wine tosserness and pretentiousness. In this case I'm glad for the 4-pack as it reduces the exposure to an ordinary beer.
