Oatmeal Stout

Had a couple at my favourite hole in the wall of Halifax before Transformers.

Appearance: Arrives a very dark brown colour with a medium brown cap that settles to a thin layer, leaving a bunch of lace.

Aroma: Heavy on roasted malts, fresh roasted coffee notes with a lingering chocolate brownie smell. Very earthy, organic nose.

Taste: Somewhat sweet and chocolatey with a nice long espresso like bitter finish. No surprises, just a nice tasting stout.

Mouthfeel: Perfect level of carbonation, velvety smooth. Highly drinkable.

Final Statement: With the lack of complexity comes a very smooth and drinkable stout. Perfect for relaxing over a pint.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

G: Pint Glass

A: Dark black body with a think white layer of head. Looks like the head was cut off by the waiter. Left little lacing.

S: Hints of roasted malts, some coffee and chocolate. Overall quite faint aromas

T: Again, very faint. Mild coffee and chocolate is all I can pick out.

M: Thin bodied and medium light carbonation. Smooth and leaves a slight bitter chocolate finish. Felt to thin for a stout.

D: I did not enjoy this much at all. Every aspect was very weak and the price was not justified.

Arrives jet black with a deep tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves good lacing. Smell is of coffee and roasted malts, with just a hint of hoppiness. Taste is dominated by coffee, and has some sweetness involves before the hops kick in to finish it dry and crisp. Mouthfeel is a touch thin, but very smooth, and drinkability is good. Solid stout, but clearly meant to be a drinkable year round brew and not a bold or complex vehicle. They also brew an imperial stout on a seasonal basis, and I'd be interested in trying that to see if it makes more of a statement. As it is, this is a nice beer in it's own right, but not one that goes out of it's way to wow you.
