The CANQuest (tm), in its ever vigilant search for new CANs from around the world, recently came up with a new source in China! It reinforces a point that I had not CANsidered when embarking on this journey - CANned beers are an international phenomenon with other countries getting what they CANsider "imported" CANs from other countries as well as producing their own domestic CANned beers. Coupled with the modern micro-CAN craze in the US & The CANQuest (tm) has the potential to be unending.

From the kelly green CAN with the distinctive red "K": "Kingway Lager Beer Quality Grade: Premium".

I Crack!ed the CAN open & began an inverted Glug until the resultant head became too much to handle. I backed off and watched as it became two-plus fingers of foamy, fizzy, bone-white head that quickly fell to wisps. Color was Pale-Straw (SRM = 1 -2) with NE-plus quality clarity, enabling me to see into the future. Nose had a grape-y, vinous quality, leaving me unsure that it is a Euro Pale Lager as identified. I have smelled this sort of thing before, believe me. Mouthfeel was thin and watery. The taste was odd, not as clean as I would expect from a lager, but I did not get the dreaded corn adjunct flavor, either. It had an odd tang, though, perhaps from the malt, maybe from the hops or even some combination thereof. I think that I will go with the malt & yeast as it vaguely reminded me of sourdough bread. I CANnot go so far as to say that it was unpleasant, though. It was unusual, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Finish was semi-dry, slightly sour/tangy with a lingering vinousness. At least it was refreshing on a hot, humid summer evening.

This was my second beer while travelling on business in China in April 2015. My research notes before leavign the states had this beer considered to be #9 out of the Top 10 China (Lager) beers. It had a 4.5 ABV according to my language assistant. I poured from a dark, 600ml bottle into a glass.

A - golden, straw yellow with plenty of carbonation resulting in a nice hear
S - lemony, with a hint of hops
T - somewhat sweet, lemony and hint of hops
F - light with carbonation

Better than the Pearl River (Euro Lager) but not a true lager either -- its lacking.

Taste is a bit thin, grainy, with a slight hop.
A mild nose. Gold and crystal clear, medium head and lite body.
This is just a fermented thin beer that I would pass

The rain in here in Hong Kong refuses to let up, guess I'll drink more beer. Poured from an 11.2 oz. can. Has a light golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is very mild, some light malts. Taste is crisp, malts, some grains, not a lot of flavor but kind of refreshing. Feels light in the mouth and overall is a passable beer, but nothing special.

Bought from a convenience store in Mongkok. Drunk in my hostel room from a tumbler.

Pours a pale gold colour with an almost green tinge. Fluffy head of sparse white bubbles that settles out to a ring of foam. Leaves no lace but a persistent string of fizz. Bit blah; as expected.

Smells sweet and adjuncty. Mostly corn but a decent amount of honeyed oat, and a slight citric edge to it as well. Just mild acid that could be down to pure and simple carbonation, but makes it tolerable; not too sweet although it smells a bit insipid.

Taste is bland and empty. Bit of grain upfront may be genuine, with a touch of honey, barley and sticky rice. Gets maybe a touch of melon midway but doesn't go anywhere, just a whole heap of nothing on the finish but it's not crisp and clipped, it just fades quickly to a muted version of before. Mildly sweet, too, which is a turnoff. Yeah pretty meh.

Flat yet quite thick in the mouth. Not full, though; just empty glugginess. Needs more fizz.

Might go well with Chinese cuisine, but as a beer it's a big empty cauldron of nothing.

Kingway Beer (Premium Lager) has a thin-to-medium, white head and a mostly clear, golden appearance, with some lacing and very fine particulate matter floating about. Some streaming bubbles are present. The aroma is of sweet, lightly toasted barley malt, and the flavor is of sweet, lemony, pale malt, cracker, a touch of paper, and just a kiss of the hops. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Kingway Beer finishes crisp, clean, refreshing, drinkable, mild, and semi-dry. Overall, this is a very good beer, and I think it is certainly worth a try.

Pours a clear, straw color. Two inch head of a white color. Great retention and good lacing. Smells of strong pale malt, grain, hint of sweet malt, hint of sulfur, and a hint of hops. Fits the style of an Euro Pale Lager. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of pale malt, slight sweet malt, grain, hint of hop, and a hint of sulfur. Overall, decent appearance, aroma, and body for an Euro Pale Lager.

A: Poured a staw yellow/clear gold, with a white head that quickly disappeared. Left basically no lacing on the glass.

S: Smelled mostly of corn sweetness, with a faint apple and malt undertone.

T: Strongly of sweet corn, and a light tartness of apple. No malt or hop profile in the taste at all. Surprisingly not a strong skunky flavor, for being in green bottles for God knows how long.

M: Very light on the tongue with crisp carbonation. Easy to drink, with no strong dryness.

O: Easy to drink, would go well with a spicy Chinese dish to cool your mouth. Not something I ever plan on buying again. Found it at a Grocery Outlet for 5 bucks.
