Recently, there's been a lot of interesting development in downtown Racine. They even have a Japanese restaurant now! I thought I'd never see the day.

The Historic Century Market sprang up two years ago, as part of this ongoing revitalization of downtown. The Market features offbeat/ethnic foods, organic produce, a full-scale butcher shop and deli, original artwork, a coffee shop, and a good-looking wine selection (althought I don't know much about wine). It's a pretty hip place - perhaps a bit too hip for Racine. Definitely aimed at a Trader Joe's-type crowd.

The beer selection is varied, if not terribly extensive. The midwestern and northern US is well-represented (especially Wisconsin), with a lot from New Glarus, Great Lakes, and Lakefront, as well as some farther-reaching picks, such as Rogue and Big Sky. An alright selection of imports (German and Belgian were the most common), but nothing to write home about. This is a good place to go if you're in Wisconsin for a little while (as I was) and just want to pick up some quintessential Wisconsin micros.

I was struck at how cheap all the beers were, but that might be just because I've been living in LA the past three years and I've gotten used to paying more for everything. I'm not sure how this place compares to other similar markets in Wisconsin, but to me it seemed like a bargain.
