Pretty limited beer selection, but a pretty cool place for a nice day or a long night. Live music spot on weekend nights. Food is very good. Funky ambience.

A tiny niche in the old downtown area, this pub definitely goes beyond the moniker 'beer joint'. It's rather a claustraphobic atmosphere, what with all the smoke and narrow hallway spilling into an even smaller bar, but it exudes character from every crack in the masonry. The patio out back is the perfect place to relax, with wrought iron furniture scattered about and a fountain tucked away in the corner. Inside, there are fewer places to sit, but then, there are few people keeping their seats when the bands begin to play. The music is a good assortment, with much of the talent coming from the nearby universities. The place rapidly fills as night falls, quickly overflowing into the courtyard. A nice feature of the outdoor portion is the inclusion of a beer pick-up window of sorts. Because of the close confines of the interior, it can be quite a hassle to fight one's way to the bar and back out, and the pick-up window eliminates that chore. The selection is surprising, with a select amount of beer available, chief among which is a nice assortment of Abita. And, lest we forget, the $1 MGD...The Thirsty Hippo is one of the finest establishments in Hattiesburg and I definitely miss going there.

Definitely a good place to go in Hattiesburg for a varied assortment of live music. On nights with no music, I still enjoy hanging out in the patio area in the back. Very nice atmosphere - the place is small, so it can get crowded very easily, but in that case you can always catch some fresh air outside.

They have a pretty good selection of beer for this area. Several types of Rogue are available, as well as Beamish and Boddington's at reasonable prices. Unfortunately, they also serve Miller High Life (at $1 most of the time).

All in all, a good place to go and relax.
