Our award winning ale is a traditional sweet stout. Rolled oats bring out the flavor and richness. It is full bodied and is a meal in itself.

On tap at Milly's 12/28/10:

A: Dark brown and hazy with a 1 inch light brown foamy head that slowly dissipates. Becomes black, clear (as in not hazy), completely opaque as it starts to settle.

S: Lots of dark roasted malts, oatmeal, coffee notes, chocolate.

T: Oatmeal and dark roasted malts are the most notable flavors. There's a good helping of chocolate and coffee, medium caramel sweetness. Very creamy. A good traditional oatmeal stout.

M: Very rich and cream, full body, viscous, smooth, low to medium carbonation, silky mouthfeel.

D: The thick body make this almost like a little meal in itself, I paired it with a burger and thought it complimented quite well.

I believe this is their flagship beer since back when Stark was called Milly's Tavern. I've always enjoyed it and it's a fun place to go have it on tap. Well-rounded oatmeal stout.

Draft nitro at Milly's tavern
Upside down waterfall, great thick head and retention basically black color

Nose some nitro then mild roasty malts, cookie and baking spices, hint if burnt cocoa, chocolate oatmeal

Taste roast and a little acrid burnt flavors, roasted malts and burnt coffee, dark chocolate oatmeal, fruity flavors and creamy nitro, bitter spicy hops, dry finish, gets a little salty briny like

Mouth is med bod very creamy soft nitro

Overall not a big fan of the roasted burnt flavors and very spicy hop, not as much of a smooth creamy oatmeal stout

This was poured into a glass mug.
The appearance was a fairly nice looking burnt dark brown close to a muddy black color. Slowly dissipated to leave some messy lace.
The aroma had some sweet oats, sweet coffee, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, dark toast, slight dark fruits and a touch of anise.
The flavor leaned towards the roasty coffee bean side while a developing touch of dark and milk chocolates rode in to play with the balance of it all. Subtle aftertaste of dark toast, dark fruits and malted chocolate.
The mouthfeel was between medium and full bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Oats provide some sweet smoothness. Finishes exceptionally smooth with sweet oats and coffee bean dryness.
Overall, pretty nice oatmeal stout well worthy of coming back to.

Good morning & welcome to my first entry in my New New Hampshire CANned Beer Sunday (Week 657)! I have gotten the bulk of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody winnowed down to the point that I CAN again focus on what really matters. Namely, The CANQuest (tm)!

From the CAN: "Made in Manchester, New Hampshire"; "Est. 1994"; "Hail the Ale"; "This gold medal beer is named for the matriarch of Peter's shepherds. This is a traditionally styled sweet stout with the luscious taste of flaked oats. Robust and full bodied, this velvety ale is great from start to finish."; "Like a Meal in a Glass"; "Made With Barley Oats Hops Water Enjoy!"

Wot?!? No little yeasties were harmed in the production of this brew?!? Next to hops, the wee yeasties are my faves. Oh, well, let's Crack! this bad boy open & see what's what in Whoville. It seemed a little light on its fill, but it offgassed so I was not CANcerned that the head space might have allowed for oxidation. I gave it an inverted Glug which produced a finger of foamy, deep-brown head with limited retention, quickly falling away to wisps. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose was less sweet than I expected, more smoky and with a bittersweet chocolate essence. Mouthfeel was on the thin side, not watery, but not up to par for a Stout. The taste was quite chocolaty, slightly bitter, but quite sweet for an Oatmeal Stout. Finish was semi-sweet with a lingering smoky chocolatiness. I am CANflicted as to how I feel about this one - it was decent, but it seemed to straddle styles, leaving me CANfused.

Poured from a 12oz can into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color with a thin light brown head that fades quickly and leaves a very thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains strong chocolate, roasted malts, toasted oats, coffee and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of toasted oats and a hearty but not too heavy roasted malt character. Then some sweet flavors of chocolate and coffee come in. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium-to-heavy body, light-to-medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, slightly filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid stout to drink for a while.

No canning date that I could find.

A: Pours near-black with a very tall and very frothy light brown head. Great head retention and thick tendrils of lacing everywhere.

S: Burnt toast and a tiny bit of chocolate. A little bit sweet.

T: Hmph. Sweet and creamy up front, followed by a deluge of burnt pretzel and dark chocolate. Interesting contrast. Finish is dry with lingering charred bread.

M: Light bodied, creamy.

O: Not a bad oatmeal stout. Creamy at first and then dry and bittersweet. A bit of a departure from most oatmeal stouts which border on milk stout (very sweet).

Poured on draft into a tall tulip glass at The Holy Grail. Pours a beautiful near black, with a two inch tan head that leaves some wisps of lace behind.

Smell is grainy biscuit, toffee, sweet chocolate, and some vanilla.

Taste follows biscuit, mild coffee, chocolate, toffee and vanilla .

Mouthfeel is almost medium creamy, mild carbonation, fairly dry, and excellent drinkability.

Overall this is a very nice brew for what it is being only 4.9% ABV.

Look: Straight molasses with head that resembles whipped cream. Thick lacing left on glass.

Smell: Vanilla, roasted malts, hint of black coffee.

Taste: Decent taste. Slight bitterness at first, yielding to coffee with a malty finish.

Feel: Mouth-feel is medium to heavy.

Overall: Alright. Nothing exceptional yet, but i'll give this brewery a chance.

This beer was phenomenal. Thick, subtlety sweet, and very smooth. If you go to Stark and do not get at least a taste of this beer, you are missing out.
