I stopped into Milly's yesterday (17JUN12) for a Fathers Day lunch courtesy of daughter Caitlin. I had a coupon for a free 8oz serving, so I opted for this RIS. Was good enough to have a couple more full pints.

Glass was filled with a deep, dark, opaque brown bier. Head was tan, rich and creamy, lasted quite well and left great stick. Aroma was inviting, with roasty coffee and choco notes abounding. The feel of this RIS was smooth, but it was too thin for the style. While still about medium-bodied, it lacked the requisite chewyness of a RIS.

Lots of roastiness was present flavorwise. Dark choco, mocha, roasty coffee, dryish cocoa nibs - it was all here. Even a touch of molasses-like sweetness hit the palate. The finish had a strong floral hopping, which lingered well. I rather enjoyed this, as it accompanied my spicy chicken sammich nicely. Thnx Caitlin! Prosit!

Poured from their swing top growler into an imperial pint glass. Color was a nice dark coffee opaque black, with a thin light brown head. Head didn't last at all, was gone almost instantly. Aroma was a bit of brown sugar, a bit of burnt coffee, and a tad of chocolate. Flavor started off slightly lactose sweet with a bit of chocolate. Chocolate came in late as an almost after thought. A tad of bitter/sour. Felt a bit thin in the mouth. Coated well, but still seemed thin. A strange hybrid. Overall not bad, but seemed a little light to be an imperial stout. Not quite as heavy or chewy as I normally like.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is jet black, with a mid-brown, small bubbled, dense head sitting about a quarter of an inch on top of the beer. Aromas are sweet blends of coffee, molasses, milk chocolate, and caramel. Very complex aromas, and very well balanced. Smells good. Flavors are more coffee forward, with a good roasting and heavy dose of coffee grounds bitter. Cocoa nib and dark caramel highlights along the coffee backbone, with some earthy tones mixed in, as well. The aftertaste is more of a mocha coffee flavor, with a bit of bitterness and a slightly filmy, creamy finish. The beer completely coats the glass as you drink. Decent beer, and with a lower ABV than most RIS, this one is easy to drink in quantity.
