From growler purchased evening before.
Pours black with dark brown highlights around the edges. Thin white head eventually disappears.
The smell is of roasted dark malt, espresso and hints of licorice.
The taste is of sweet dark malt balanced by bitter coffeeish roastiness. Slight touch of mild smokiness. Hints of licorice and carob come through, with a touch of butter. Pretty well-balanced - sweet, though not quite as much as average for the style.- works well, though. An unexpected hint of alcohol emerges in the finish, my guess is from the lack of a full-body more than anything. Finishes with a controlled sweetness.
The body is lighter side of medium with just a bit of too much wateriness than I would like, esp. for style. But, it is smooth and fairly coating.
Easily drinkable/sessionable. Mild but tasty. A worthy brew.

This beer was being tapped at the Easton Brew fest last year as a very limited amount. I was lucky to get some before they had ran out. The beer was in a gravity cask and poured out as a dark looking black color. The beer had been aged in port wine barrels before being put into the cask. The smell of the beer had some light roasted note and a some wine-like funk to it. The taste of the beer wasn't too bad. The malts and wine flavors gave off a chocolate tort kind of flavor, it was like bitter and sweet all at once. It was interesting at least. The mouthfeel was a bit on the flat side from the cask and barrel aging, slightly watery for an Oatmeal Stout. Overall I thought it was nice to have, and I enjoyed it.
