To many, the festbiers of Bavaria are a liquid voyage to the tents of Oktoberfest. For Tucher, nestled in its home in northern Bavaria and out of reach of the festivals that overtake Munich’s fairgrounds each fall, the focus is on Fruhlingsfest and celebrating the end of the cold winter months. As such, this festbier is brewed as a fuller-bodied helles lager with a slightly louder presence of old world hops instead of a marzen and is available to festivals year-round!

A damn fine festbier...

It looks spectacular - clear with foamy, lace-ridden head down the glass; it smells to style; it's mouthfeel is carbonated but full-bodied, and the taste has a malty sweetness that is simply enjoyable. Great festbier - I'll be looking for more for later this year...

Pours clear, gold in color with one half inch head. Taste is white bread with crust, white sugar, and grass. Sweet, light bodied, high carbonation. Nice and clean Festbier with minimal bitterness. Really enjoying this one. Will get more.

Brauerei Tucher Brau "Festbier"
500ml can coded "PRO: MAY.12.2023 BB: AUG.12.2024 080512". Sampled on JAN.1.2024
$2.79 @ Total Wine & More, Claymont, DE

Notes via stream of consciousness: The body is a deep golden in color beneath a thumb's width of white foam that drops shortly but leaves some nice lacing behind. The aroma is sweetish, grainy, bready, and subtly floral. The flavor follows and it's clear that this is a wiesn style fest. It's bready, doughy, and grainy with a moderate to median bitterness and some balancing spicy and floral hop notes. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp before warming to become smooth. It's easy to drink but still flavorful, and at 5.8% ABV you can drink a few, which is the idea.

Pours crystal clear straw yellow with a thick white head that dissipates rapidly leaving spotty lacing. Aroma is biscuit, bready malt, lemon and floral hops. Flavor follows the nose, a touch sweet up front with just a hint of bitterness in the finish. Feel is light bodied and well carbonated. Overall, an excellent beer.

Beautiful pouring beer, lively quick rising carbonation, absolutely crystal clear dark leaning gold, big initial head, some nice initial lacing and nice cap remains a while.

Nose is rich pale malt, very lightly caramelized; dried leafy hops, little bit of cracker.

Taste is really nice; it’s rich full pale malty goodness; with cracker like quality to it; nice little hoppy bite on the finish; earthy grass.

Leaning towards medium body; but drinks really light and easy, the malt coats the palate then quickly disappears in the presence of a clean hoppy bite, really nice, enhances the crispness of this beer.

A really bright and pleasant Festbier.

I enjoyed this festbier, which is a little lighter than the marzens you normally find this time of year. I agree with their description that it's more of a Helles than a true Oktoberfest, though at 5.8% it may be a touch high. But there is a good backbone to this beer with just a touch of hop spice mixed in, balancing it nicely. I'd never had anything from this brewery before but I'd try other beers from them for sure.

On tap:
A moderately hazy pour into a shaker glass didn’t have a lot of head, but decent surface coverage was maintained. Honey lemon tea malt notes greet my nose as I close in on said glass, with a light bit of toasted bread melanoidin. Taste is surprisingly more clean and bitter in comparison. The honey malt is noticeable, but a somewhat piney / lemongrassy bitterness pairs with it and grabs more attention as each sip evolves. Similar to other festbiers I’ve had, the bitter and malt notes play together a little better as the beer gets warmer (or my palate adjusts), improving the overall experience.

There was a strong hops aroma as soon as I opened the can. It started out with two fingers of white creamy head, but settled to a thin white layer about halfway through the glass. Carbonation is light compared to most lagers. The body is a little heavy and a little sweet, but it is well balanced by hops. This is very decent festbier at a very reasonable price. The rating of very good is accurate.

16.9 oz can filled May 12, 2023 into a tall Lager glass.
L: Pours clear light gold with a thin creamy white head that recedes to a thick skin, large steady carbonation bubbles, medium-light lacing, banding & spots.
S: Malty, grains, light fruits, a hint of bread dough.
T: Gently bright fruity hops, caramelized malts, somewhat rich, a hint of apple. It is lightly sweet with a fruity "bite" at the top of each drink.
F: Brisk, bright medium-full body with a smooth middle and a fast, clean, lightly drying finish. It is gently sticky.
O: Bright, malty and very easy to drink. Has a zippy feel and a clean finish. Very well balanced taste and feel. It is excellent in its style.

From a 500ml can brewed 5/12/23. Clear amber color with a finger of foamy white head. Bready aroma with some floral hops. Medium body with good carbonation. Rich malty flavor with a herbal finish. First time seeing this and I would get it again.
