Style: Extra Special / Strong Bitter (ESB)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
A heady flavour from a combination of mixed malts, carefully and skillfully mixed by hand, which we believe provides an ale of exceptional character. Full bodied yet rounded, series but eminently quaffable.

I sampled a 500ml bottle of this from a case supplied from the Beer Club of Britain.

The beer poured a dark brown colour with a very thin dark cream head, but this faded very quickly.

The beer had notes of barley and malts with a hint of burnt caramel, very pleasant. The malty nose and taste led me to labelling this a Scottish beer as it was the closest I could find.

The taste was initially of toasted malts and a slight citrus and berry aftertaste, this was pleasant but could do with being stronger.

The mouthfeel was slightly above medium, quite a pleasant beer, but the tastes could do with being stronger.

Got this on cask from a Whetherspoons in Cardiff.

Appearance: Warm orange, verging on red, with a thick creamy off-white head, showing good retention.

Aroma: The aromas are overall quite weak but there is bready malts, hints of sweet fudge, and a light fruitiness.

Taste: Clear malts up front, providing an oaty sweetness, with touches of biscuit. There is a hoppy bitterness towards the end, which is slightly perfumy, and citric.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, clingy and smooth.

Drinkability: Quite refreshing, although the perfumy aftertaste is a bit too overpowering. Nice feel, and the initial flavours are really quite appealing, however the aromas are almost undetectable.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a dark red/amber colour with little to no head, and no lacing either.

Smells faintly alcoholic and malty.

Tastes of medium to dark malts and some nice fruity English hops. Well balanced out with a bit of booziness too.

Overall a nice drop.
