4 December 2005

Pale yellow colour, perfectly clear with bubbles rising to the top, small white bubbly foam head and a small amount of sediment left in the glass. Aroma is of sourish fruit. Pineapple like fruity taste, light to moderate bitter hop finish. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Very easy to drink.

a) Strong bubbling, keeping a good white head. Quite cloudy, pale orange.... looks like a hefe.
s) Potpourri/waxy, citrus/passiona notes; sllight lolly note
t) Pale malts, tropical/pineapple fruitiness, citrus, lychee. A touch sweet, but more a fruity sweetness than sugary
m) Quite light, but has a consistent length and easy bitterness. Lots of effervescence, prob some secondary in the bottle
d) very....

Appearance - Quite opaque and light, 2 fingers of head which reduced.

Smell - Mostly grainy smells with light fruits.

Taste - Quite interesting - I believe this is the only Kölsch style ale I have tried. It seems somewhat like a cross between a lager and an American Pale Ale. The bitterness level is good, but it is rather lacking in fruity or other interesting tastes.

Mouthfeel - Very good all round.

Drinkability - Goes down pretty easily, but not quite interesting enough to be highly drinkable.

Overall - If I remember correctly, JJ Pale Ale is better than this. I will be reviewing it soon.

A - Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass with a 2.5cm fluffy white head that falls away fairly quickly. Beer is a slightly cloudy straw colour.
S - Slight citrus notes on top of a grainy aroma.
T - Some earthy, herbal notes along with a slight nutty taste & a fruity hint.
M - Fairly light bodied, high carbonation.
D - Nothing to get too excited about but nothing offensive either.

Appearance - 3.5
Very yellow and quite hazy with a tight white head. Looks a little like a hefe witbier.

Smell - 3.5
Rather hoppy and floral, although not overly pungent. Smells slightly sweet amongst the hops.

Taste - 4.0
Very refreshing immediately, and with a pleasant bitter aftertaste. While the hops predominate, it is actually quite smooth, with slight nutty and lemony flavours.

Mouthfeel - 4.5
Rather soft, goes down really smoothly. I love that this has the carbonation of a lager, but the creaminess of an ale at the same time.

Drinkability - 4.0
I can see no reason why not to use this as a session beer, price excepted. After a while I could see myself wanting something with a bit stronger taste, but this really is an easy drinking beer.

OVERALL - 3.85
The first time I tried this I was a little disappointed in the apparent lager-like lack of character. Upon tasting a second time my expectations were lower, and I could see the beer for its strengths, those being the easy drinkability and wonderful mouthfeel.
