Finger plus of foam, average tannish brown color, the center filled with larger bubbles which may reduce retention, the lacing is more splotchy than streaks but can’t fault the stickiness. Black liquid, you can see fat bubbles slide up near the glass sides, nothing to gauge regarding clarity nor cloudiness. The nose is all liquid smoke, like choke to death type smoke, not sure why this is not a Rauchbier if we are being candid, even has that molten rubber aspect, then there’s an odd pairing of plum and green apple fruit scents, caramel and coffee rinds, maybe matted grasses or peat, so intense is the primary element that all subtlety and nuance is lost, you better like smokiness. Medium-bodied, good flow, even wiry, the attack displays a white grapefruit bite which for a moment jolts you, opens your taste buds to more of the cherry, apple, Italian plum fruit. The more you sip the more the smoke permeates. Mild German chocolate cake notes, coconut and caramel. Like the metallic, earthy qualities which linger through the finish. Could use more “bottom,” that is, denser anchor flavors besides the smoke to really get into. Likely best with food, like smoked pork or barbecue, needs a similar mindset.

The pour was pretty standard, black straight pour with nice tan head that lasted.

The aroma is probably my favorite part of the beer. Love the chestnest, coffee, smokey smell that fills the air when you pour it. There's also a bready, cracker note along with malt. It blends together very well, forming a nicely layered scent that reminds me of Christmas.

I was surprised by the feel of the beer; something this dark, I usually expect a thicker beer but this was lighter, almost watery. But do not be fooled, this is as smokey and bitter as any other porter. First and foremost, I taste the carby, malty taste first then it firsts off with a more complex mix of chocolate, woody black coffee taste. The label says they use German malt, which makes sense as this reminds me of dunkel.

Very good beer at a very affordable price.

pours a deep brown in color with 2 fingers of head which slowly dissipate and leave a small amount of lacing behind. aromas of chocolate, chipotle peppers, oak, roasted peppers, sweet yet roasty. the flavor starts off roasty, with a nice malty sweet backbone following it.. then the peppery smokiness comes in.. a really tasty porter. a bit thin for the abv, but suitable for the style.. carbonation is on the low side as well.

this is a pretty nice beer from CL.. for the price, i'd probably stick to the imperial ipa (same size bottle), but that's just style preference on my end. this is a pretty damn good beer for the season though.
