Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the little birds that fly by the brewery looking for grain after the weather turns cold, this was originally to be a Fall/Winter seasonal. Clearly we underestimated the market for this smooth and malty brown ale, and we have decided to keep it for year round enjoyment.

Appearance: chestnut brown in color, 1 inch head, clear, high carbonation

Smell: caramel and coffee

Taste: nut, light toasted malt, caramel, and coffee

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, medium carbonation, nice mix of sweet and bitter

Overall:Nice and malty. The nut comes through in places and it drinks like an English Brown Ale at times. Above average to good and certainly sessionable. There are others I would choose first in the style, but this is a quality brew.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Best by Aug notched on label. Single purchased at Oliver's Beverage (ALbany, NY).

A: Chestnut brown with 1-finger of beige head with decent retention but only spotty lacing.

S: Chocolate and prune-raisin aromas are strongest with some herbal and soft citrus and floral aromas.

T: THe flavor is malty with a fairly sharp but not overwhelming bitterness. The floral hops come through in the finish. The chocolate maltiness grows through the drink with some soft coffee as well. Dark malt flavors of caramel and raisin build through the middle. Low-moderate bitterness.

M: A little too spritzy on the carbonation but good medium body.

O: An inobtrusive brown ale with a light AMerican hops kick. Nothing spectacular but solid and very drinkable.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: medium amber-brown hue with a very light haze and a light effervescence. Head poured a very thin layer of ivory foam, but this dissipated quite quickly.

Smell: rich aroma which is nutty, chocolatey, caramelly and overall very brown ale-y. Quite good.

Taste: flavor is a little bit more subdued on the lovely chocolate from the aroma, but there's still a caramel and nutty quality to it. Hops come in here but are also subdued, and bitterness is low but balanced. There's a little bit of a tartness as well. Not bad, in general, but I would like to see this beer with a taste more like its aroma.

Mouthfeel: medium to medium-light body with a good level of carbonation developing a respectably creamy texture. Pretty good!

Overall: a tasty enough and quite drinkable brown ale. I could see myself having this again; I'd like to try it on draft.

Thanks to cosmicevan for the extra. Served in a standard pint. Pours a reddish-brown with a slightly hazy clarity and a loose, quarter inch, tan-colored head that sizzles and pops and recedes into a broken oily slick and a tight band around the edges. Nose is light and malty with a touch of sweetness as well as a slight nutty quality. There's also a trace of something metallic as well in the background. Taste consistent with nose - sweetness is not readily apparent; however a roasted coffee/earthy quality comes out in the flavor profile with a bit of noble hops and char the lingers between quaffs. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a prickly carbonation. A solid brown ale but nothing really stands out per se. That said, if you are a fan of the style, it's worth trying out.

Poured into a nonic pint glass, the appearance had a dark brown color with a slim finger’s worth of an off-white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Sly lace. The aroma had some nuttiness and earthiness up front and then some caramel and toffee malts in the background. The flavor leads with the nuts, somewhat sweet with a gentle roast in the background. Sly crisp sweet to roasty aftertaste with a semi-creamy sort of dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Good carbonation. ABV feels good for what it says. Overall, good brown ale worthy of partaking again.
