I had this for the first time at Miller's in Charlottesville right before a Tapes N Tapes show at the Jefferson. We hadn't been there in a while and I grabbed the beer list and that mofo got even bigger. I had to get a two hearted to get started, but then went with the west coast ipa. It was good.

On tap, also at the Winking Judge.

Amber-russet hue, a thin white head that dissolved into a ring. A bit of lacing.

Great nose to it. Malts, floral and citrus notes, decent hop character.

Very flavorful IPA. Good blend of earthy notes, resins, malt and caramel, with the citrussy hops dominating the finish. I quite enjoyed the orange-peel character in this brew.

A bit thinner, but still very quaffable. Moderate carbonation.

Another fine offering from Magnotta. I'll definitely have to road-trip it out there to check out some of their other offerings. A great session brew; I can see myself enjoying a few pints of this.

On tap @ Augusta's Winking Judge. Review from notes.

Pours a slightly hazy glowing amber with 2 fingers of creamy white head that initially leaves sheets of lacing down the glass.

Earthy floral hops, pineapple, grapefruit, pine, biscuit, and bread in the nose.

Fresh floral hops, big earthiness, pine resin, and sweet tropical fruits are nicely combined with some characteristic bready malt and caramel thrown into the mix. The earthy character seems to inch this beer a bit closer to an EIPA, but the tropical fruits and pronounced hoppiness bring it back to where it belongs.

Mouthfeel was crisp, medium bodied, but felt it could have been a bit creamier. Great balance and an easy quaffer.

Overall, a very solid offering and one of the better IPA's from Ontario. Flavourful, balanced, and easy to drink, you can't ask for much more.

Magnotta make one of my favourite session IPAs, so it was with a certain degree of anticipation that I sat down on Volo's patio with a pint of this cask ale.

Hazy light amber body with a bubbly white head, without a great deal of retention or lace. Earthy aroma, with some pine resin and biscuit. Great earthy, piny taste with a strong biscuit malt backbone, and a light splash of grapefruit and caramel. Decent bitterness, and a nice long finish. The flavours are well combined and there's excellent balance in this beer. While there is very little carbonation, the body still has a good deal of complexity and depth from the cask format.

I found this to be yet another exceptional beer from one of the region's better breweries... I could have sessioned it forever! Hopefully it will make further appearances!

Uses: Canadian 2-row barley, warrior and cascade hops.

Brewed for Ontario IPA Cask Challenge at Volo's. Enjoyed with the brewer. Straight out, using their homebrewer kit and it worked, by Jove! Nothing special in aroma, though cascade used it looked fine with bubbly cask head on golden body. A good bitterness from warrior hops, although they would have liked it to sit another couple days, but a challenge is a challenge.
