Tasted in a pint glass from nitro draft at The Vine on February 24, 2018. Look is dark red amber with a thick creamy head and lingering lacing. Piney hops. Full in body.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass, "crush by" date on bottom of can is "FEB 27 2018".

APPEARANCE: pours a clear, deep amber color with one-finger tan head with excellent retention, slowly dissipated until a thin, unbroken layer of small bubbles remained, medium carbonation.

SMELL: bread and caramel, there is a slight pine note.

TASTE: initially sweet caramel and bread then an understated piney hop profile and finished with a slight metallic taste.

PALATE: medium body and carbonation.

OVERALL: this is an unbalanced, malt forward IPA that did not work for me, it's not terrible but, there are better IPA's out there so I would not seek it out again.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, best before 2/2/2018. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red, light copper/brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper/pine, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, floral, grass, and toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/fruity hops and dark/bready/light roast malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper/pine, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/roast, herbal, floral, grass, and toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, herbal, grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper/pine, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, roast, herbal, floral, grass, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity hops and dark/bready/light roast malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, fairly sticky, and slightly chalky/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 6.4%. Overall this is a delicious red IPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity hops and dark/bready/light roast malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink, with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. Nicely juicy fruity/citrus hop complexity, balanced crystal/Munich/light roasted malts. Never overly sweet/heavy with adequate dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and great style example.

Pours a dark reddish brown ,cream colored head with quite a bit of lacing. Not much nose here, maybe a little malt. Taste is malt forward with a tiny bit of hop bitterness. For $1 at TW I'm not disappointed, a one and done for me.An average beer.

Pours a brownish color. The head is off white, frothy, 1 finger, good retention, and nice lacing.
The nose is fairly subdued. Slight hop, but not much else.
Taste, a slightly bitter hop to this beer. Some malt also.
Feel is about what I would expect.
So,so beer overall. I don't think I would go out of my way for it.

This is a very uneven beer. No real hop structure. I taste nothing but bitter and malt. Lots of pine but nothing to compliment it. Light carmel notes aren't enough to add another layer and save this one.

L: Pours a brilliantly clear copper red color with a large rocky white head that dissipates rather slowly and leaves sheets of lacing all around the glass.

S: A very piney, woody aroma, with notes of tropical fruit in the background, a few notes of caramel and malt follow the pine. Overall, it smells a little sweet.

T: A very strong piney taste, with notes of tropical fruit. There is a strong malt in the background and a medium bitterness.

F: Medium to fuller body, medium carbonation.

O: This is an average piney red IPA, but as far as Colorado brewed red IPAs, I would much rather have Odell's Runoff Red IPA.

Pours a dingy dark amber color.

Smells of pine and some subtly sweet citrus.

The taste hits similar notes as the smell, but with some caramel malt added. The pine is definitely present, but is balanced enough to not distract from everything else. Mouthfeel is light and this is quite drinkable.

Solid beer!

Enjoy by 2/17/17. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours auburn with ruby hues and has nice clarity; bubbly off-white head that fades leaving nice bubbly retention and decent lacing. The aromas are malt forward with some fresh cut fruit. Hints of watermelon mixed with some dark fruits. Caramel and toffee is in the mix. The flavors basically follow the nose. More watermelon notes along with some subtle hints of grapefruit and pine. There's some raisins and plum in the mix. More caramel and toffee. Solid malt backbone with a mild earthy bitterness. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is ultimately light with moderate carbonation. It's very smooth and easy to drink.

This is a solid brew. It comes off as a "Red IPA". It might not be flashy or anything crazy, but it's enjoyable and very refreshing. There's nothing wrong with this one at all.

Marketed as "piney." Half convinced they used pinesol to brew this beer..... I'm not a huge IPA guy; I tend to draw the line at pale ales. This beer was surprisingly decent though. I would not necessarily buy it again, yet I would drink it. As previous reviews have pointed out, it is rather malty, sweet, and piney. I recognize that people seek out this flavor, so I would say it is marketed as what it is.

Pours a clear, copper color. 3/4 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of English hops, slight citrus hops, sweet malt, tea, slight caramel malt, and a hint of grass. Fits the style of an American IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of English hops, slight citrus hops, sweet malt, tea, slight caramel malt, and a hint of grass. Overall, great appearance, but aroma, body, and blend are average at best for an AIPA, but slightly better if an EIPA.

BOULDER SLOPE STYLE WINTER IPA 1/13/16

Received a twelve-beers-a-month club gift from my daughters and the first delivery included three bottles of this.

Enjoy by Mar 30 2016, for whatever that is worth.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Sierra Nevada IPA glass.

a: Clear copper/ruby with an inch thick offwhite head which receded slowly to rocky surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Mild citrus and pine resin

t; Rather mild pine resin over a medium bready malt base, followed by a light to medium hop bite. Dry finish with slight lingering bitterness.

m: Medium, good body with some creaminess and good carbonation tingle.

o: A nice unusually dark, rather substantial winter IPA. Easy drinking and satisfying. Hard to tell how fresh this is but the hop flavors end up falling back in favor of the rest.

Price Paid : $1.49

Pours a copper/burnt orange color with an off white head of 2 fingers. 80% opaque.

Aroma is of pine resin, hop oils, grapefruit rind, some flora. No malt.

Taste has pine at the front, light grapefruit, and then mahogany and cherry notes, mixed in with lightly toasted caramel malts. A bit of blood orange. A harsh pine stab finishes out the profile.

It has a distinct creamy feel, with prickly carbonation and a pasty finish.

Overall impressions : It's an okay red IPA. Not something I'd have again, but if you like IPA's, try it. The label lured me in.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance- The brew is served a copper color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a nice level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the brew is rather heavy of a nice pine hop smell mixed with a little bit of a caramel and toasted aroma. Along with the pine hop, comes some other hop smells of a floral and grassy nature.

Taste – The taste begins with a nice bready and light caramel taste mixed with a decent showing of a pine right from the start. As the taste moves on the pine increases in intensity more toward the end with some other hop taste of a herbal and grassy nature coming to the tongue as well. With a little bit of grapefruit and a bit of an increase in the sweet, one is left with a rather modestly hopped and easy drinking feel to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel –The body of the brew is on the medium side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather average. For the modest hop blend and the medium matiness of the brew the feel is rather nice and makes for a more easy drinking brew.

Overall – Not really sure what makes it a “winter” IPA, but it’s not bad and pretty easy drinking overall. Nothing super extraordinary, but one to try if you get the chance.

Was surprised by this beer. When I first had i thought 'm one of Boulder Beer's most different in a while (live in Boulder). Pours a nice mahogany color, with a white-ish head, let it sit in the glass for a few minutes, take a deep smell, the smell is quite nice, hoppy, some fruit, but you really have to take a deep smell.
A = 4 (nice color, decent head, ok bubbles)
S = 4.25 (need to make some effort but its there)
T = some sweet, some hop, neither too over the top, a bit of red licorice, probably from the malt, but not nearly as much as Spaten Optimator...
M = pretty neutral, nothing to notable here. Medium body, medium carbonation...
O = 3.5. Kind of novel for the style, is an IPA, but a deep red malty kind of thing...

Gladly grab Runoff Red before this, wanted to like it but disappointed in the offering.

Updated - Draft pour @ University of Beer into a shaker pint. Much better aroma and taste vs my first experience. So updated initial 3.38 rating. Good, but I don't see myself buying this when Runoff Red is available.

Dark copper with an inviting two-inch head of bone-white foam.
Aroma-Piney hops and malt

Gorgeous clear red coloured brew with a firm and steady head of foam with great lacing.

Biggest nose of bitter pine that I can recall having. .maybe ever. No malt.

A smidgen of caramel malt sweet is first but it is quickly overwhelmed by this HUGE pine bitterness that I find too much for my palate to handle. Horizon hops are mentioned on the label. Perhaps I should avoid beers using them in the future?

Medium body with medium carbonation.

I was hoping that the hops used would be to my liking but they are not. No revisits planned.

I find this quite the enjoyable beer. Sure it is a little light in the shorts on the hops end but the blend of chewy, toffee/caramel malts and the piney hops is delicious. Personally I love the flavor of this beer and the balance...more of an americanized ESB in my opinion and really good.

12oz bottle in IPA glass; amber with a reddish hue; moderate head with resilient lacing; I smelled a hint of alcohol and some sweetness; a balanced flavor initially but ended bitter. Overall: enjoyable but not memorable. As much as I prefer IPAs, if in the mood for a winter ale, I'd likely opt for a conventional winter beer over this hybrid style. (8.0)
