Late at night in the dark cellar or among the rows of towering vessels at Boulder Beer, if you listen carefully you can hear the eerie sound of the Dragonhosen. Brewed with generous amounts of Vienna and Munich malts for a rich, full-bodied malty flavor, Dragonhosen begins as a traditional Oktoberfest lager, then stealthily breathes fire with 9% alcohol by volume. Hallertau and Czech Saaz hops add balance with a mild earthy aroma and flavor with moderate bitterness. And if you find yourself at Boulder Beer, listen closely and beware...if you hear a scratching and scraping coming your way, the bite of the Dragonhosen is sure to follow.

Taste: Big warming alcohol whiskey, spiced, malt and woody oak notes. Bready, malt boozy nose. Copper, clear, smaller head with delicate lace on taster glass. Medium/Full body. There is a peppery almost barrel wood character to this boozy Oktoberfest. 34 IBUs

12oz undated bottle poured into a.5L krug at fridge temp 9% ABV. The beer pours bright dark reddish brown with a fizzy chocolate tan head that disappeared in minutes. A small island of head remains as a skim coating leaving no lacing. The aroma is dark brown sugar and some booze. The flavor is sweet slightly burnt sugar up front rolling into some booze and bitterness to keep the giant malt bill in check. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, lightly carbonated with a fairly bitter & mostly dry finish. Overall, undecided. It would seem this was a normal Marzen that was fed a bunch of sugar and just hasn't calmed down yet. Might be the only Oktoberfest I've had that I would consider aging.

It pours reddish burnt orange hue, with hints of passionate maroon. Head is nice and frothy, 1/2 finger in the snifter.

Lots of great Marzen-type malts on the nose, both slightly smoked and softly peated. Light caramel aromas.

Very scotch-y on the flavor. Lots of peat, smoke, and fall spices. It reminds me of Dirty Bastard but with lots of Marzen influence. Some light dirt on the finish.

Feel is thick and sticky, but not overly thick - more a medium-thickness. Lots of carbonation. Slight dryness on the finish.

Overall, this is pretty darn delicious. It's exceeded my expectations. I'd have it again this coming fall.

Poured from 12-oz bottle into sampling glass. Attractive appearance, watered-down cherry cola color with a light tan head and nice lacing. This is malt forward on the nose and palate. Not overly sweet, with a bit of alcohol bite and only a tinge of bitterness. Very good and an easy drinker despite the high ABV. This is an interesting and well done variation on the traditional Märzen.
