Appearance: Murky brown with a thin light tan head.
Aroma: Toasty/sweet malt similar to Bender.
Taste: Very much a hopped up brown ale. Some good earthy hop character but overall sweet caramel toasted malt.
Mouthfeel: Just above medium in body and a bit heavy for an IPA. Average drinkability and regular carbonation.
Final Thoughts: Chose this one from the tap list because I assume it's a one-off type deal. Definitely an interesting beer but far from the being in the top of Surly's line up. Basically a hopped up brown ale. Would I drink it again? Maybe.

apparently stealing a page out of the hammerheart book, i cant imagine that little brewery is any real threat to the regional dominance of surly, i suggest instead that they may have been inspired by the very interesting and delicious beers of hammerheart, and this is their own trip down that road. its a smokey black ipa, on oak, with a ton going on in it. the nose is rauch heavy, german style smoked malt, aggressive, but somewhat smoother out by the wood. the hops are piney and woody and big, centennial and some other more bittering types, very pungent. one sip tells me this beer isnt for everyone, but it certainly is for me! i love the rich woody campfire smoke with the black roasty charred malt, and the piney deep woods sort of hop, its a great combination, and its united beautifully by the oak, which is quite prominent. smooth and rich tasting with a long almost acrid bitter finish. this is an abrasive beer (pun intended), and its definitely more fall than summer, but its an interesting brew and one of the more far out there beers i have had from surly. on tap at the acadia cafe, a real cool beer bar in the twin cities. some of surlys most intriguing work right here, even if it was externally inspired...
