Style: American Black Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.99%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
This double black as night IPA is too massive for just one brewery's efforts. BLAKKR took the trinity of Real Ale Brewing Co, Surly Brewing Co, & Three Floyds Brewing Co, to actualize this crushing ale. Cheers.

This is the 16oz canned Surly version.

Super cool beer. Taste like a combination of Surley and Backmasking...which are 2 beers I would never imagine mixing. Being my first black IPA I would have to say that i like the style.

Overall, I really enjoyed this beer outside of the price point.

Appearance: Black with a thin tan head. Not a lot of head retention but nice lacing.

Aroma: A mix of pine and citrus with a slight hint of roasted dark chocolate.

Taste: Citrus, orange, caramel malt, light roasted coffee notes with pine and juicy citrus light bitterness on the back end. This really finishes nice.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate to low carbonation. It feels lighter than it looks.

Overall: The flavors really work well together making this a great beer. It's not world-class like some of the other Surly offerings, but it's not far off. I will pick it up again however it's certainly not an every weekend type beer at the price.

16oz can dated 1/26/16 poured into a teku glass
A: Pitch black with a one-finger head
S: Bitter. Citrus rinds. Cocoa/coffee. Pine. Tough to place the darkness and all the hops add but it's all there
T: Matches the nose. Quite bitter, mostly pine/citrus but with serious dark notes begind it. Dry coffee/cocoa notes along with some burnt chocolate malt. Again a bit tough to come up with desriptors but it's complex, hoppy and delicious
M: Medium-bodied, quite bitter
O: Whoda thunk Surly/FFF/Real Ale combined would create a hell of a good beer?! DUH! This is all that and a bag of chips

Had this at Surly beer hall. Carbonation is spot on, very good mouth feel. Not picking up much pineapple like surly said I would, but am enjoying the hop flavor and malty goodness coming together. Very good black ale. Would get again.

A 1 pint can canned on 26th January 2016 and poured into an oversized wine glass.

Appearance: It poured a dark dark brown colour with an orange hue and a slightly less than one finger tanned head that dissipated fairly quickly but left nice lacing.

Aroma: A mix of piney and citrus orange hops and roasty dark chocolate.

Taste: Starts sweet-ish citrusy orange followed by caramel malt, light roast coffee and chocolate plus a hint of char before ending with a lasting pine and juicy citrus light bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate to low carbonation.

Overall: A nicely balanced Black IPA that hides it’s high ABV well.

COD 1/26/16. Pours black, as advertised. World class head volume, lacing and retention.

Outstanding, and surprisingly fruity, nose of pine, dank, citrus (lime) and tropical (passion fruit) hops. Underneath is a mild sweetness that I can't identify when cold, but seems to be caramel as it warms.

Light medium body that has a rather slick texture. Superb carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a prickly finish.

The quite outstanding flavor profile is unique. It begins with a blend that quickly devolves into lime, dank and pine. The middle provides a succulent caramel based sweetness that arrives in wave fashion. Underneath is a layer from the dark malts that hints at bakers chocolate and a touch of char, but not roast per se. Fairly mild bitterness arrives mid-palate and is a combination of pine, dank and zest. As the bitterness fades, the sweetness arrives coupled with a note of passion fruit. The finish is a slow sweet fade that takes on a zest quality as it lingers with dank and pine playing around the edges.

Black in color with no light penetration. There's an inch think densely packed brown head resting on top. Heavy lacing. I smell plenty of dark malt and piney hops. I taste plenty of dark black malt with notes of caramel, honey wheat bread, chocolate, and bitter piney hops. The mouth is chewy and resinous.

Pours a dark brown color with tan colored head. Pine and roasted malt dominate the nose; follows onto the palate. Almost like an IPA that was brewed with lots of roasted and dark malts. Finishes much the same. Full bodied too.

I had this poured at Surly's. It pours very dark with a nice head. A totally unique taste of black licorice. A really impressive beer!
