Notes: Double dry-hopping with Citra and Mosaic hops creates intense tropical fruit and citrus aromas. Brewed with Golden Promise malt and just a hint of haze, this beer finishes rich and dry.

Not quite a West Coast IPA, not quite a NE IPA. It was first brewed in collaboration with Amager Brewery in Denmark. Brewed with one malt, Golden Promise from the UK, with Citra and Mosaic hops. Named by Amager’s marketing director Henrik Papsø.

Loved this brew! This is one juicy IPA, go out and drink some if you can find it. I hope Surly makes this year round some day.

The aroma is very powerful, lots of Grapefruit with some piney smells as well.

Taste - Well, it's a 5 in my book. Just a great in your face IPA.

In conclusion, this beer shreds just like the can says it does. \m/

Excellent brew from Surly. I really enjoyed this face melter. Traditional Surly finish wants you wanting to take another sip to continue the face melt. I highly recommend this hop bomb!!

Before you do anything breath this one in. If you bumped up the ABV and the beer is Stone's Enjoy By! Not an over the top west coast IPA, but you will not make a mistake about the style. Very drinkable. The ABV would kick my ass. 4.5
A - Cloudy ruddy orange with an off white head - 4
S - Grapefruit - 4.25
T - Bitter but not too much, grapefruit, grapefruit rind, but plenty of malty backbone to smooth things out, a tinch of sweetness, 4.5
MF - Medium body with a dry finish, a bit of a bite from the hops, 4.5

10 day old can into a tulip

L - Bright orange amber with slight haze. good 2 inch head that dissipated quickly leaving slight lacing
S - Tropical dank with mango, citrus, passion fruit and weed.
T - Tropical bomb with big time mango and citrus. Slight sweetness from the malt balances a smooth bitter finish
F - Soft and velvety with refreshing carb. Medium bodied for the style but bang on to balance the hops

Overall this is a stellar beer. Overpriced, but worth it. If this was part of their regular lineup I would struggle to drink anything else.

Aroma is a wonderful mix of pineapple, blueberries, honey, and wild onion. Some piney quality as well. Fresh and floral with some grassy notes. Very strong and pungent. Funky passion fruity, mandarins. Very difficult to smell anything past the hops. Clean yeast and malt, malt perhaps supplying a bit of a honey note. Maybe some toasted bread is there as well.

Pours slightly murky light orange with a small off-white head. Ok lacing, with moderate head retention.

Big tropical fruit and citrus on the palate. Again wild onion, garlic, and blueberry characteristic of Mosaic in my experience. Some honey is notable too. Orange and mango with a hint of biscuit. Grass, kumquats. Big flavor without being heavy on the palate. Dry finish with lingering resiny hops and honey.

Medium low carbonation with medium body. Mouth filling hop flavor with little bitterness in comparison. Almost refreshing.

Quite the beer. Crazy complex hop character. I could see people saying things like hops this interesting could mask flaws, but that seems untrue as I've recently had an all Mosaic beer that had interesting hop flavor, but drinkability was marred by yeast esters and under attenuation. This beer is clean and bone dry allowing the hop flavors to really come out without being too sticky or bitter.

Pours a medium orange color, thin white head with some lacing on the glass. Thick hop smell, beautiful tropical fruit smell with some grassiness as well. Taste reflects very much of the same. Smooth mouthfeel puts this one into the top tier of IPAs. Very well done.

Look-definitely the beer's least impressive feature, color is a very cloudy orangish yellow, with a brown tinge. Pours two nice fingers of white, frothy head that retains well, leaving nice chunks of lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell-Wow. A burst of complex, hoppy goodness. Grapefruit, tangerines, nectarines, mango, and a strong, distinct, tropical presence that i thought to be very similar to guava. Then comes a punch of floral and earthier hop notes, Definitely a little malt in there on the back end, supporting the bright hops.
Taste-Like the aroma, waves of hops, the tropical and citrusy notes are balanced by more hop notes of pine and grass, the malt is particularly sweet, almost caramel like, but very subtle, just cutting off the hops to crossing over from intensely floral and citrusy to bitter. Amazing Balance.
Feel-Body is very heavy, but not oily or even creamy, the intense carbonation keeps things refreshing, and the beer finishes juicy.
Overall-Review says it all, this one to me is right up there with Heady Topper and Pliney Elder in the the league of world class hoppy brews.cheers

As the description on the can suggests, this is definitely a "beer to shred your face, in a can." Absolutely a fantastic IPA. This pours a hazy gold all the while hitting your nose with hops... super hops! Wonderfully citric bitter and bold flavor; a very bold in your face IPA. If you like zombie dust or pseudosue your going to love this beer.

WOW. Mine was a little more than a week old and this was absolutely incredible fresh. There was tons of fresh hops on the nose and tons of character in the taste with just enough hoppy goodness on the finish.

Cloudy gold. One finger head that quickly dissipated. Lacing is just ok. Tropical and citrus notes shine on the smell. Bitter forward and the mosaic comes in after for a nice fruitiness. Ends with a bitter orange from the citra. Carbonation present yet smooth.

16 ounce can served in a tulip glass. July 23, 2015 canning.

Cloudy copper body. Wispy and foamy white head. Lace trails abound. 4.5

A bit of cat piss, a bit of mango, a bit of pineapple and passionfruit. Light and sweet malty creaminess. Subsequent attempts to soak in the nose become fruitier and fruitier. 4.25

Fresh and unripened mango are all over the flavor. Pineapple, passionfruit, orange juice and grapefruit juice blends... All these flavors find harmony on the tongue. Zesty grapefruit develops on the finish as the beer warms and has a lingering quality underscored by a sweet melon and mango flavor that are very nice. 4.25

A touch floral, a touch zesty, a touch citrusy and even a very faint, yet pungent funk make up this beer. It's got a light quality to it but still plenty of body and fullness. 4.5

It's got all of that tropical flavor I love, so of course I dig this brew. Damn good.

Pours a hazy light orange, with a less than one finger white head which fades quickly, leaving spotty lacing. The aroma has pine, grapefruit, grapefruit peeling, pineapple, and mango.

Has a grapefruit forward taste along with pine, pineapple, mango, cracker, and biscuit malt. There is some sweetness, but it is overpowered by the bitterness.

Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Has a grapefruit and grapefruit peeling aftertaste. A good beer, but I like most, if not all, of Surly's other IPAs and DIPAs better.

Can. Pours mostly clear. Not all that hazy. Aroma is of both assertive and sweet hops. Green, bitter-smelling, potent hops along with some blended tropical fruity hops. Flavor is interesting because the first sip demoralizes my bitterness sensors. It's got such a bitter initial zip. Then once my buds are blown into an abyss of confusion and massochistic sadness, all the sweetness and tropicality of the hops come out and dance on my tongue's vanquished soul. Lots of squished citrus, pineapple, nectarine and mango. The dank and grass slithers in and out of my mouthpiece. Finishes with a fruity sweetness and maltiness that tames the mouth dragon. Medium bodied. Reminds me of a grouchy, spiteful and diminutive Abrasive Ale. Very good! Thanks Todd?

7/23 stamped 16oz can

Pours a deep, golden orange color. Very hazy. Large , thick, soapy white head that results in a quarter thick ring.

Smells of malts, ripe citrus, and mosaic hops. Pretty dank and funky.

The citra hops are on full display here. It comes off the top ropes with a blast of orange. Tastes like I just ate a juciy clementine, rind and all. A little bit of peach juice, some sweet malts, and then some bitterness that just seems to snowball all the way till the end. Very clean finish.

Pretty full bodied beer here with significant resin feel.

16 oz. can. I think you know what this is. If not, please see knittingadvocate.com.

The pour is liquid orange pulp with a head that falls like a sack of quartz, leaving behind fiddly white patterns skulking along the surface. Nose is very citrus & mango forward, leaning into a mucker of tropical fruit baskets. Pretty nice.

Todd the Axeman is one of those beers that I have to block the pedigree in order to savage it fairly. The tropical hook in the nose is still present in the taste, but the minimal carbonation flattens out the flavor profile, & not in a good way. Big peeled mango, razor-sharp bitterness, grapefruit, mild pine sap. Big malt sweetness that cuts the hops, but the bitterness makes a Vanilla Ice-style comeback to dominate the finish. Too heavy to drink much of.

I guess I’ll be that guy: I’d take Furious, Overrated, Abrasive, & several other local IPAs over Todd. The lack of bubbles might be impacting my enjoyment. A good beer, but not worth the price & I recall it being much better on tap.

Canned 7/20. This will certainly tide me over until abrasive is released. It's not as pungent or bitter as Abrasive, but it is a great beer in its own right:

Bright orange fire poured into a Surly tulip. Sweet citrus hop taste with biscuity malt backbone. Smell is not overpowering but it doesn't need to be - subdued citrus, grapefruit, mangoes on the nose. Could use more carbonation, but maybe that adds to the insane drinkability. At $20/4pack I can't really afford many of these, but maybe that's for the best. Surly really knows what they are doing!

Tallboy canned on 7/23/2015. Aroma is super pungent and the mosaic hops shine here. Taste follows suit, an absolute juicy hop bomb. Very dry. Light malt backbone. Under-carbonated, which is the only major flaw. This beer is going to ruin my palate for weeks.

A - nice hazy orange, can't complain

S - Deeeeeeeng. Mango, orange peel, peach, pine. Super ripe with plenty of dankness.

T - Follows the nose perfectly. Delightful.

M - Not as carbonated as I might have liked, but it drinks easy for 7.2%

O - Certainly a top IPA. I'd go back for more and more if this was readily available

Huge tropical mango, hoppy nose. Lightly toasty/biscuity malt presence. Balance between sweetness/juiciness and drying hop bitterness is pretty spot on.

Gives Abrasive a run for its money and that's tall praise. Superb balance, great nose and with a polite but noticeable ABV. Another winner from the Twin Cities.

Added later: this beer is even better fresh from the tap at brewery taproom! Get it while you can.

Poured from the can into a tulip. The nose jumps out at you. Beautiful fresh hops. There are waves of citrus flavors and even a little pine to my taste. It drinks like a big DIPA to me but has a nice and easy finish. If you like Abrasive this should be in your ballpark.

This was canned on 7/29/15, so at only a few days old it was extremely fresh. Beautiful gold/orange appearence. You can really smell the citrus. Same with the flavor, citrus and pine, wonderful bitterness. Expensive, but I'll have to sneak it into my rotation. Wonderful beer. (note) After having a few more I had to up my rating...just an awesome beer.
