Notes: Double dry-hopping with Citra and Mosaic hops creates intense tropical fruit and citrus aromas. Brewed with Golden Promise malt and just a hint of haze, this beer finishes rich and dry.

Not quite a West Coast IPA, not quite a NE IPA. It was first brewed in collaboration with Amager Brewery in Denmark. Brewed with one malt, Golden Promise from the UK, with Citra and Mosaic hops. Named by Amager’s marketing director Henrik Papsø.

Canned on 7/16/15.

Appearance: Awesome can art. The beer is medium caramel in color with some clarity and also hop sediment. Poured a dense off-white head that quickly dissipated. Looks quite different than when I've had it on tap, darker and tepid looking from the can.

Aroma: Resinous pine and that signature citra funky mango. Smelled the most explosive right after I cracked the can open.

Taste: Huge bitterness throughout paired with soft caramel notes from the malt and a bouquet of hop flavor. I'm not sure the ratio of mosaic to citra or additions but I'd bet on a large quantities of finishing hops. While the obvious comparison is to that of Abrasive, the main difference is less perceived sweetness and more raw bitterness. The hop flavor ranges from resiny to juicy fruit gum. The finish is smooth followed by a last burst of bitterness that fades in the aftertaste while bringing back some of the fruitier hop notes. If I didn't know that this was 7.2% ABV it would be difficult to guess. While it doesn't feel like a big beer there is a heat on the back end that pairs nicely with the dying bitterness. Another excellent beer by Surly.

Mouthfeel: Just above medium in body. I always find it to be over carbonated on tap, but it has about average carbonation for the style when given a healthy pour from the can. Good drinkability, but it's hard to resist the flavor so that's a given.

Final Thoughts: I was very surprised and happy to see this on the shelves. The $16.99 price tag is a bit much but I understand citra hops are not cheap. I will say that the appearance and mouthfeel leave a little to be desired but the flavor and aroma speak for themselves. I assume it will have rotating availability so I look forward to each new batch. Would I drink it again? Yep.

This ranks up with Abrasive and BA Darkness as the best beers I've had from Surly. The combo of Citra & Mosaic is a proven winner, but it needs to be brewed with the right malt base. This is not quite on par with some of the Trillium brews, but it's damn good.

Had on tap at the Pig & Fiddle and Lake & Irving.
L: A cloudy straw gold pour crowned by a white to cream colored foam collar with a very fine bead. Persistent with cling.
S: Fresh mown grass, citrus, earth.
T: Big citrus biscuit palate with a smidgen of sour fruit, melon, grapefruit and berry. A little tart and bitter on the finish. Above average bitter.
F: Very creamy, soft and luscious on the palate with a medium body and carbonation.
O: I would drink this every day if I could find it.

Canned 7/23/15. $15.99 for a 4 pak at Sentyrz. Thought I would buy 4 just to give it a try. I'm gonna have to buy more now that I have had it. Damn you Surly!! I love me some Citra hops and this beer has it in spades. Opening the can the smell is just awesome. The taste follows suit. I would choose this over Abrasive.

Picked up a can of Todd at Zipp's yesterday after having Todd on tap about 3 weeks ago.
I was absolutely blown away when having it on tap at Surly.

Canned was also amazing - but not as much of the hazy color. Pours a beautiful darkish orange and the aroma is what draws me in. Unbelievable huge citra, mango and orange notes.
The taste is just as good and the nose hits with malty sweetness and excellent hop balance. The malt lingers and the hop stops a bit before that.

Best IPA I have ever had from Minnesota. Unreal.

lots of hype about the release of this one. bottom of the can reads 7/21/15.

i'm not sure this one lives up to the noise. i'm not seeing the haze that other folks mention, and there's no head or lacing to speak of. smell is the best part of this one so far, which is saying something. taste is bitter but not lingering. mouthfeel is clean but thin.

maybe on tap this one is better, and reading some of the reviews below it sounds like a completely different beer. i'll finish the other three and move on to something else.

Stopped over at Surly to try a few of their local brews. This American IPA was exceptional, possibly due to its freshness, but smooth a a nice hop balance nonetheless. A top brew for me.

Staring down a 4 pack to Todd empties dated 7/23 as I write this review

It did not win me over at fist sip...but Todd seems to get better as you drink it and acquire the taste.. A rarely mentioned but important quality of a beer is its staying power the diminishing marginal utility of todd is very low. Todd is just getting better and better as I drink it which is great because e many other beer taste great a first sip but get old quick. Much more fun to grow in to a beer that out of one. loving this IPA.

On tap at CBC 2016 - day 2. Super dank and with tons of hops in the aroma as well as the taste. Notes include oranges, pineapple, unripe mango, a bit of pine resin.

I got a lot of pineapple flavor from this beer. Comparison wise, it's certainly as good as anything Half Acre has ever made (Beer Hates Astronauts comes to mind). Tastes like a double Akari Shogun, minus the wheat, plus Citra hops. Really good stuff. Would love to blind-taste this against Anicca, Spiteful IPA, BHA, Space, Broo Doo, etc. to crown a true Midwest IPA champ.

Wonderful balance of juicy citrus and sweet marmalade on the nose. Intense pale fruits define the palate. It finishes dry but every flavor lingers... much to my delight.

This is my desert island beer. Absolutely phenomenal in every regard.

This bright golden slightly hazy beer bursts out of the glass from the table. Huge pineapple, grapefruit, and dank grassy notes. Melon, pineapple, grapefruit, and Five Alive hits your tongue. Rich and oily body. Quite frankly the best Midwest IPA I've had since the glory days of ZD & Sue. Immense flavor and slick body. Home run.

among the best ipas i have ever had. it has something so special about it, and although this might be offensive to some, i found it decidedly east coast in style. it has all the features of something like an abner or something lawsons would do, this might as well have come from vermont. glowing hazy orange color with a tall white head, you just know by looking at it thats its the same type of ipa, raw and juicy, just how i like mine the best. then you smell it, and oh man, its an explosion of fresh pineapple, melon, lemon, citra, mosaic maybe, maybe even some nelson, its just fruit punchy and insane. the thing that i find amazing here, is that the taste is even more developed than the nose. so often in these types of beers, the flavor never lives up to the smell, they get washed out and messy, but not here, all of that tropical hop brilliance comes on, and lasts forever. the pineapple is the dominant note here, especially in the finish, and there really is hardly any bitterness at all. i could drink this all year and not get bored with it, which might be the ultimate compliment for any beer coming from me. its s juicy, my mouth waters for it after every sip, and i find my glass is gone way too fast, owed in part to its soft medium body and sparkling carbonation. among the best i have ever had, and for all the beers that were under expectations here at surly, the very fact that they made this one makes them one of my favorite operations in the country. what a beer! easily worth the hype that surrounds it. stunning.

On-tap at the new brewery restaurant (my first visit). Tasted 21 April 2015.

Pours hazy bright golden-orange. One finger of white head, excellent retention and lacing.

Smell is incredibly fruity, bursting with big citra hops. Remind me of TG's PseudoSue. Oranges, pineapple, mango. Full underneath that with sweet caramel malts.

Taste is really good, but those amazing aromatic hops are beaten down by a powerful bitterness. I get them for a second, then they're going down as the bitter rises, the two crossing paths.

Feel is decent. A little flat, a little heavy. But good and bright.

Excellent beer, super aromatic in the nose, and delightfully fruity.

Look: Cloudy golden apricot with a bit of tan film
Smell: Citrus and tropical fruit, pine
Taste: Really nice balance emphasizing the hugely aromatic and citrus-tropical fruity hops with just enough malt to give it some body but not enough to make it oversweet. Not very bitter for the amount of hops character.
Feel: medium body, smooth carbonation.

Overall: A great fresh IPA with ideal balance that highlights the awesome fruity hops character while providing a good malt backbone. Seamless blending of flavors.

On tap at Surly. The color is beautiful, glowing, slightly hazy orange with a white head. Smell is fantastic tropical fruit. Taste is perfectly balanced bitter and sweet citrus and tropical fruits.

This is the best IPA I've ever had. A truly incredible experience. So flavorful, yet crazy drinkable. I had to go back for 4 more glasses.

Passed a goblet of this at the Surly tap house in Minneapolis.

L: Pours a beautiful bright, hazy straw color with an inch-and-a-half of white head that lingers for a good bit and leaves nice lacing on the glass. Moderate visible carbonation where you can see through at the edges.

S: Big, bright citrus and floral hop notes. Some bubble gum and freshly cut grass. Biscuit malt notes underneath. This is a beautiful bouquet.

T: Incredibly tasty IPA. There's really bright citrus hops right in front, mingling with the biscuit malt underbelly. Grapefruit, tangerine, cut grass, and bubble gum notes follow. There's a bit of clear alcohol in the middle, but you really don't sense it much--surprising for an ABV this high. The close is delightful hop bitterness. It's more clean than sticky, but it definitely lets you feel the bitter.

F: Medium-bodied and expertly carbonated. It's smooth and creamy but also bright and bitter in turns. This one went down a lot easier than I thought it would.

O: I try a lot of IPAs. I'm a big fan of citrus bombs and pine bombs, but I also enjoy Belgians and more traditional West Coast and Midwest varieties. That being said, this might just be the best IPA I have ever tasted. It's really that good. You would do well to go out of your way to try this one on tap. You won't be disappointed.

On tap at DLD15.

Orange-yellow body, nice one finger white head, although this was a plastic cup pour. Smelled like oranges, grapefruit in the truest sense; very grapefruity without much grainy sweetness. Awesome. Tastes very similar, mild-moderate resinous and grapefruit rind bitterness; overall tastes like grapefruit hops. Fair amount of pale malt sweetness, but not too sweet. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but there is plenty of flavour to bring it through. Not too bitter, very drinkable. Overall a very juicy IPA that impressed me quite a bit. I will have to agree with everyone else and say that Surly needs to can this beer, STAT.

Appearance: Arrives at the Surly Taproom bar with a golden color verging on orange; an inch of foam caps the liquid and leaves a few strands behind

Smell: Dank and filled with tropical fruit and citrus elements - grapefruit, passion fruit, mango and pineapple

Taste: Cracker malt underpins the dank and citrusy hop elements; as in the aromatics, grapefruit, mango, passion fruit and pineapple; juicy and moderately bitter in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Would love to see this one show up in a can; seriously competes with the best Surly has to offer

This is the best IPA I have had. While drinking this for the first time I recall saying to the bartender that I would be happy drinking this daily and never try another IPA. He nodded in agreement. Beautiful nose, but that taste! It cannot be topped!! Heavy on the Mosiac & Citra with a clean and light malt backbone. I just wish I could make it to Minneapolis more often, or you know, if they could just ship me a keg every month.

Wow. Great beer, really glad they finally put it in a can. Beautiful looking golden color with a bright white head that sticks around. The nose is very fruity on this one with mango sweetness. Very hoppy flavor, lots of grapefruit with a decent amount of light malt flavor on the end. This is a super easy drinking IPA. Definitely worth the price as a seasonal treat.
