Solid blackness, slim layer of cocoa-toned head atop.

In the nose: grassy, citric, caramel-covered hoppiness. Bright and dark at once. Nice.

In the mouth: more bright, citrusy, juicy, covered up, wrapped entirely with dark malts. Medium-bodied, easy-drinking, very tasty. Roasted malt flavors linger long in the finish. Hops continue to play on the palate. I’m loving how long it persists. Lovely stuff.

Black IPAs have certainly fallen out of favor in recent years, but this one reminds us of how good they can be.

This beer pours a very dark brown with a large mocha head. The aroma features notes of candied orange and grapefruit peel, some pine resin, overripe peach, and a hint of roasty malt. The flavor starts with bitter chocolate, and roast coffee, with pine, candied orange peel, grapefruit peel, burnt orange, and a load of resin. The mouthfeel is fairly full with bright, fizzy carbonation. Overall this this is a really great beer, in a mostly forgotten style, with a good combo of malt and hops.

Appearance: Pours with a furious bubble show that settles into the full three fingers; webs of lacing line the glass as the liquid is consumed

Smell: Furiously roasty, with cocoa, coffee and smoke tones; a citrusy element, as well

Taste: Roast forward, with cocoa and coffee tones building; through the middle, the citrus emerges, bringing a furious bitterness to match the roast; there is a hint of sweetness, in the finish, though the roast and bitter tones remain dominant

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with furious carbonation

Overall: For furious hopheads only, this beer has bold flavors going for it in every direction

Thanks, NathanBeets, for the opportunity

Poured from 750ml bottle into glass. No dating information found on bottle or label.
Clear, dark brown colored body. Big fluffy, light tan head settles to creamy cap. Great coverage of residual lacing.
Aroma of citrus hops, dark roasted malt, and dark chocolate.
Taste is citrus hops (orange), some resiny piney hops, bittering from grapefruit pith, darker roasted malts, a little char, and dark chocolate. The chocolate really lingers in the aftertaste. Noticeable level of bitterness (Furious-like). Dark chocolate is just a little sweet way at the back end of the taste profile.
Thin to medium mouth feel. Good carbonation level.
A bold tasting beer that uses Surly's well known IPA bitterness, with the added layers of black roasted chocolate.

Pours her black with. A fluffy, tan head and lots of lacing. Smells of lots of resin hops, malt and black licorice. Taste follows nose in which pine resin shines. Burnt dark chocolate malts. Alight citrus hop that was probably more prominent wen fresh. Still tastes great. Extremely smooth mouthfeel with medium body. This is one of my favorite of the style.

Consumed 1/13/17

A: Deep dark brown, but yes, mostly jet black - pours with a medium-large, fluffy, light brown head, slowly fades to a solid cap, leaves big splotches and streaks of really nice lacing

S: Like Furious, but roasted, obviously - some bright citrus, orange and notes of grapefruit - floral citrus - nicely balanced with some chocolate malts - nicely burnt with some roasted grain - caramel and pale aromas as well, caramel grain - low sweetness overall

T: Hoppy and dark - orange juice and flesh, with some grapefruit juice and zest - some herbal hops, pine resin, pine needles - chocolate malts, with some nice burnt flavors, hint of char - lightly roasted overall - medium bitterness, with some hoppy bitterness and some burnt bitterness - some light caramel sweetness, caramel malt, toast, hints of biscuit - light sweetness balanced by the burnt notes, some lingering roast

M: Medium body, medium carbonation, nicely dry finish

O: Furious that this style is dying

I drank Furious Black in 2015 when I visited the brewery, and I've been excited to revisit it. This bottle did not disappoint. It's hoppy with a nice malt backbone, plus a nice amount of roast. I hope this stays in rotation.

Furious black pours a black color, with a long lasting and lacing head. Big fresh hoppy aroma, with hints of smoke. Flavor is big with fresh hop flavors, hints of smoke. Good body and feel. Overall, a big full flavor "black" flavor.

First off. I really like Surly Furious. I also like black IPAs. When I saw this it really grabbed my attention. Pours from 22 oz bottle into tulip glass dark with tan head that does not last long. Nose grapefruit, cocoa. First taste, grapefruit with coffee cocoa on the back end. Mouth feel is as expected- thin. After lingering for a while I have a nice slight coffee taste. I would buy this again. Cheers!

Deep brown with a big foamy chocolate head.

Bright hop aroma and fresh bread in the nose.

Big piney hop blast, balanced by...um, balanced by nothing. This is like watery furious, the second half of this just kind of lays there.

Mouthfeel a tad thin, undercarbonated

I had high hopes for this. It was pleasant enough to drink, but the dark component of this was overwhelmed by the IPA component.

750mL bottle
Pours cola-like in color with a creamy & frothy light brown head that holds great retention. Aromas are roasted barley, pine and citric hops, dark cocoa, and bready malt. Great black IPA flavors with malt notes of cocoa, roasted barley, caramel, and bread crust coupled with a pungent dose of piney, grapefruity, orangey hops. Fuller body, very creamy but resinous, finishes bitter and dry with piney hop oils sticking to the palate with some left over roast. Overall, great change-up to the regular Furious. I found this by accident, but am thankful to try it! Definitely recommendable if you can find it.

Damn, I haven't had a black IPA of this caliber since my last Wookey Jack (RIP). Bright stonefruit nose and a sweet grapefruit bite with mellow cocoa following the hops. the malt reminds me of the smoothness of Bender. Expertly brewed, go drink one.

This is quite good. One of the better black IPA's had. Looked great of course. It is a lot like furious but less bitter for certain but just as hopped in taste and aroma. Heavy toast but subdued roast. A bit of sweetness but not too much. Real smooth with just enough carbonation to give it a bit of bite. Maybe a tad thin, but nothing to complain about. Well blended flavors.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a 17 oz. New Belgium goblet.

Dark black with a sturdy, 2 finger head, smooth, fine bubbles.

Citrus hoppy smell with resinous background.

Seriously bitter flavor. Tastes like all the hops were in the boil, with only a few for the aroma. Overwhelms even the roasted malt flavors.

Satiny smooth on the tongue, alcohol well buried, carbonation not significant after pouring.

Overall, this is an unbalanced beer. The malts cannot stand up to the hops. Don't get me wrong, I do like a good, hoppy ale like Todd the Axe Man, Arrogant Bastard or Molotov Cocktail, but this needs more refining.

black. that's what i was expecting. lots of lacing down the glass. seems pretty on target so far.

citrus up front in the nose. maybe some caramel or tootsie roll notes in there. smell is pretty good.

taste falls apart a bit. citrus and melon up front, and then it kind of drops off. finishes very dry and bitter.

mouth is well carbonated. medium body.

the finish on this one just kind of wrecks it for me. presentation is nice, aroma is good, but the taste is kind of lacking for me in terms of depth and the lingering bitter isn't a good one. i prefer the original.

First time I had a dark IPA like this. Could've sworn it was a stout when I first saw it, but it was great. Classic IPA taste and bitterness to it and then some. Very balanced malts and hops I would say. Great beer glad I had a chance to try it

A really mellowed out yet ultimately hop forward version of Furious with a tidy malt backbone and rye bread feel. Looks great, and has a great nose on it - floral grassy hops. Enjoyed this a lot. Nice dusky feel to it,

On tap at Surly’s Beer Hall. Served in a 16 oz. chalice.

Appearance: Color is jet black. Moderate amount of bubbles and a solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A juicy and roasty hop forward aroma with a scent of citrus, caramel, and roast. Upfront scent of hops with citrus hints of grapefruit, orange peel, tangerine, and melon. Earthy and floral hops with some hints of pine. Solid presence of roasted malt with hints of chocolate, coffee, and smoke. Also some sweet malt hints of caramel, biscuit, and yeast. A very solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy and roasty Black IPA like taste with notes of citrus, caramel, and roast. Good upfront presence of hops with juicy citrus notes of grapefruit, orange peel, melon, and tangerine. Floral and earthy hops with some nice notes of pine and grass. Roasted malt notes of smoke, chocolate, and coffee. Sweet malt notes of caramel, biscuit, and yeast. A really good balanced taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy and oily with a fairly drying finish.

Overall: A very good twist on Furious. Has the good citrus hop and caramel malt balance of Furious with a nice dose of roast.

Enjoyed at Surly Darkness Day 2015. Awesome variation of regular Furious, one of my all time favorites. Pours dark and has a noticable roasted malt character, along with a nice hoppy aftertaste. Definitely check this one out if you are a fan of the standard Furious.
