Notes: You'd think hops in the bright sunshine would make us happy, but you'd be wrong. It just makes us Xtra-Surly. This bright colored session ale Xplodes with Citra hop flavor and aroma, in a deliciously drinkable brew.

For a session hoppy beer? In my opinion it’s got more flavor than anything else out there. So if that’s what we’re judging here it’s way ahead of the crowd. I really like it, I do. I feel like they could leave everything the same, and just dial in a little more juice/residual sweetness with a less attenuative yeast, or maybe tweak mash temp etc. it could compete with some of the world class ipa’s out there. More juice, less bitter rind, this would kill the game.

Yellow gold with 2+ finger foamy head. Smells of mango, orange, lime, lychee, pineapple, floral, bit of pine with a hint of malt. Bready malt is surprisingly noticeable in the flavor, quite nice. There's a kind of dirty hop flavor and bitterness, kind of resiny and pinesol-y and leaving an aftertaste. This would be a really good beer if it was bittered differently. Overall, moderately bitter. Very dry with high carbonation.

This is like... not very drinkable. Completely unbalanced, just blasting my mouth with bitter rind and sourness. Lightly grassy as well. Also not a satisfying texture by any means. Pass.

Appearance: Pours a semid-loudy, orange color with a moderate, crisp head that fades quickly.
Aroma: Strong aromas of airy pineapple and cream. A little mango. Maybe peach. Some perfumey pine and flowers. Pillowy and not dank. Smells like a NEIPA.
Flavor: Taste follows the nose with strong pineapple, grapefruit, and pine perfume. Little pale malt body A mild bitterness ensues.
Feel: Lighter bodied. Crisp and well carbonated. Finishes very dry and crisp. Minimal to no sweetness. No detectable alcohol.

Compared to Zombie Dust and PsuedoSue: This one has a lighter color. More clear. Much more pineapple and cream. Less bitter. Lighter bodied, but not that much lighter than Sue. It really drinks like an NEIPA craze in terms of flavor, without the milkshake malt cream mouthfeel.

Overall: Such a flavorful pale ale that is lighter-bodied and so drinkable. It mimicks so many NEIPAs I've tried. Flavors like a NEIPA, yet it is crisp, semi-soft, and light. Not creamy. I don't know if I could tell the difference between a $5 pint of a local double-dry hopped, oat NE-style IPA. This is a really drinkable pale ale and is showing the local breweries that Surly can match their flavors in a macro-style with half the ABV. Impressive.

Brewed one month ago, purchased in a $12 12 pack, and can't beat that price with a stick. Very enjoyable for what it means to be. Dangerously drinkable. Bright, effervescent flavor and not heavy or terribly bitter with little of the typical dirty-socks pale aleness. Welcome addition to the rotation of All Day IPA, Sidekick, Day Time rotation of Upper Midwest session beers.

Poured from a can into a tulip.

The pour is pretty. Hazy honey-gold with a nice pillowy head and good lacing.

Aromas are fairly simple but nice. Lemon, mango and floral notes.

The flavors are more varied and tasty. Lemon, pineapple, mango, white pepper, grapefruit, white grape, grass, orange zest, and a hint of piny hop.

The mouthfeel is pretty solid. Good carbonation. Very drinkable and repeatable, but just a shade stronger than a "summer" beer for me. Still excellent.

Overall, a brew that straddles the APA/IPA line rather well. A little extra hop as promised, but not a hop bomb.

Canned on 7/24/2018. Poured into a pint glass. It pours a clear, golden-straw color with a thin, milk-white cap that dissipated quickly and modest lacing. Its nose features lemon, lime, bready malt, light pine needles and floral hops. The taste opens with a base of subtly sweet malt and tangy lemon and grapefruit. The hops are surprising-and pleasantly-bitter. It finishes crisp and clean with a decidedly bitter after taste. The feel is light and crisp with lively carbonation, and at 4.5% ABV it could be easier to drink. Overall, this is a well-made citrusy APA. I suspect the fruit has subsided somewhat since it's almost 4 months old. Xtra-Citra Pale Ale is built for hot weather activities and I can't imagine a better lawnmower beer.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a pint glass.

L: Clear light golden pour with generous white head. Falls fast with solid lacing.

S: Citra hops all the way. Juicy grapefruit and tangerine. Pine in the background.

T/F: Light followed by big citrus flavor. Grapefruit juice, orange rind, and mild stone fruit. Crisp, light, and clean. Super drinkable.

O: A fantastic session beer. Great flavor and you can drink it all day. One of the best session IPA's I've had.

Pours a clear golden color with a quickly dissipating white head. Smells of muted citrus and floral notes--definitely Citra hops, but not as evident as I would have hoped. Taste is floral, light lemon and some aggressive hop bitterness with a touch of malt sweetness to back it up. Light to medium bodied, a fair amount of carbonation, and a dry finish. A little sticky on the way down. Fairly easy drinking, and a nice beer overall.

My second offering from Surly and it was a mixed experience...

Right out of the can you get a bright-yellow almost golden colored liquid that pours a weak foam with no lacing - but the coloration of the liquid itself more than made up for those shortcomings. The smell was mostly also-ran - a deep citrus smell or oranges and limes to mask the hoppy nature of the brew. Mouthfeel was medium-bodied at first and became lighter as it warmed. Where on the nose the citrus overtook the hops, on the taste buds this is definitely a hop-forward brew. So much so it detracted from the citrus flavors more than I liked. This certainly isn't a bad brew, but I'm glad I didn't save this offering out of the variety 12-pack I have for last.

Pours a bright and clear sunny yellow.

Nice citrus notes of orange and lemon.

Muted citrus flavor.

Light-bodied, high carbonation, crisp, thin, water-like.

Overall, there's nothing to this beer. Minimal flavor and just a bubbly can of mediocre beer.

Canned 1/11/18; received via trade.

Served from a 12oz can into a tulip glass. Pours a slightly darker-than-blonde color with a thin white head that quickly dissipates. Big citrus forward aroma with just a hint of malt sweetness. Flavor is heavy on the citrus as well, notes of tangerine and a bit of bitterness, reminiscent of orange rind. Slightly dry finish. This is a fantastic pale ale that I’d love to have again. Poured from a 12 oz can into a snifter glass. January 2018 canned date

A: Poured a golden light color with a big frothy white head. Lots of bubbles and the head stuck around for a bit. Initially, it appeared to be pouring very clear, but clouded up at the end of the pour. Very nice looking pale ale.

Aroma: There was a mild hint of citrus/grapefruit aroma floating around got much more of an oat and sweet malt aroma.

Taste: Medium bitterness. Not overly hopped. Get some of the citrus flavors and sweetness.

Feel: Nicely carbonated. Medium type body with a smooth finish.

Nice session beer.

12 oz. can with a January 2018 canning date stamp; repeated on 2 May 2018.

A - It pours with a pale amber body that has a slight haze. Decent but sudsy white head that leaves some lacing.

Aroma: Citra hops and faint baked bread.

Flavor - moderate bitterness for style but hop forward.

Mouthfeel - Medium body with soft, medium carbonation.

Overall: a good pale ale.

12oz can poured into a snifter. I am on a citra hop kick right now and have drank a lot of Cigar City Guayabera Pale Ale (that has been my go-to as of late in the kegerator).

Canning date of 01/12/18 listed on the bottom of the can. Bright, crisp, citrusy citra hop notes on the nose and taste. Light bodied, low alcohol, with a nice bite in the finish. Xtra-Citra Pale Ale is a winner especially with the long hot Florida summers approaching. This is a flavorful beer that is very sessionable at only 4.5% ABV.

Poured from a 12oz can with a canned on date of 1/11/18; into a pub glass.
Appearance- a foggy gold with lots of carbonation. Head is a thin white that fades quickly. Lacing is
Smell- juicy fruit gum, lemon and pineapple!
Taste- the juicy fruit gum is noticeably absent, but the lemon and pineapple flavors are profound and make this a delightful crusher!
Feel- does not feel too light considering the ABV, and the bitterness on the tongue fits more with an IPA, as opposed to a session APA!
Overall- excellent crusher that packs some flavor and doesn’t come across watered down like other sessions!

Color is about yellow as the can is.

Lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, all the citrus scents are on par. Taste follows in suite. Very light brew.

Makes for a nice drinkable brew.

Pours hazy, light gold in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is grapefruit, orange rind, and cracker. Light bodied, bitter, with moderate carbonation. Makes for a tasty, sessionable ale. I prefer several others in the style, but this is worth a try.

Poured into a snifter. A nice hazy pale golden straw color with a frothy white head. Huge citrus aroma with tangerine, orange, and even some lime. This tastes much bigger than a 4.5% beer. Plenty of citrus featuring bitter grapefruit and oranges. A dry bready malt presence that has just enough body to keep it from being watery. The feel was on the light side but again not watery. Really nice.

THIS is what “session IPAs” should be. Crisp, balance and full of Citra!

L-bright, slightly hazy gold
S- sweet citrus. Orange, and a little lemon with the slightest Citra tropical thing going on.
T- follows smell. Balanced between slightly sweet bready malt and citrus hops.
F- medium-light body. So much more satisfying than many hop water session IPAs.

Tasting notes from 10/24/17
Had from the can (08/30/17 canned date) at Stone Arch at the Minneapolis Airport in Minneapolis, MN.

Appearance - Served from a 16oz can into a pint, pour is relatively clear and golden yellow in color with a thin, consistent layer of suds sitting atop. Small spots make up the lacing.

Smell - Aroma is certainly citrusy; mostly orange and tangerine. Not much else.

Taste - Flavor is disappointing. Some citrusy flavors upfront that quickly die out to a watery finish with a trace of orange pith bitterness. No backbone to speak.

Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with low, tingly carbonation. Watery finish.

Overall - Maybe the most wussified session Ive had to date. Would you like some more citrusy hops in your water? Yes. Yes, I would. A touch of malt body would be nice, too.

16 oz can, canned 9/7/17. Pours hazy yellow gold with a medium bubbly white head that fairly quickly goes to a thin film that leaves little lacing.

The aroma is sweet fruity malt with some resiny piney hops in the background.

The flavor is sweet cracker malts with tangy fruit and a little earthiness leading to a grassy resiny bitter hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a nice fruity hoppy pale.

12 oz. Can
Canned On: 09/06/17

Poured into a Tired Hands glass a pretty nice slightly hazy dark golden yellow color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy/foamy one-finger plus white head, which also leaves some nice creamy sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, with a nice little citrus complex (orange, tangerine, lemon). The taste is pretty nice, hoppy, malty, with some nice citrus complex (orange, tangerine, lemon). Medium body, ABV hidden very well. Overall, this is a very tasty brew. Nice to see Surly in GJ!

Almost clear golden color with almost no foam. Aroma pops with ripe citrus fruits like oranges and red grapefruit, really hoppy and bright. Taste is citrusy and sweet at first with some biscuit malt and grapefruit flesh. Light hop bitterness on the finish. Light to medium body and carbonation. Really easy drinking and refreshing hoppy pale ale.
