Love the little bit of bitterness, a great flagship beer and a great brewery to hang out at

Ive never tasted anything quite like this. Not a super easy flavor to love but very complex and rewarding once I "got it".

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance- The brew pours a clear brick red color with a one finger height head of just off white colored foam. The head fades slowly over time to leave a decent showings of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell- The aroma is strongest of a lightly toasted malt smell mixed with a pine and light grapefruit smell. Along with these comes notes of grain and a touch of earth.
Taste- The taste starts with a nice lightly toasted breast flavor mixed with a smooth pine and light grapefruit hop. At the same time, there are notes of earth and a touch of caramel. As the taste advances it dries a tad, all while a bit of toffee takes out the caramel, leaving one with a very smooth and pleasant, more resinous taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel- The body is a bit lighter for the abv, while the carbonation is moderate.
Overall- A very well crafted brew. Definitely one I would frequent more often if given the opportunity.

Pours a deep, coppery brown with a foamy head. The aroma mostly gives bread, malt, a touch of caramel, nuttiness, and light herbs. The taste follows suit with a nice malty punch up front, some citrus / pine, and a finish with light caramel. The finish is long on this one, with an almost coffee-like after taste. Overall great beer all around; slightly astringent mouthfeel but definitely one I'll go back for.

Furious
Surly Brewing Co.

Look – 4.0
Whoa… dark burnt orange pushing into brown. I’m going to have to register the SRM… call it around 18-ish. It’s darker than an imperial amber, drifting past most ambers and heading toward brown ale territory.
Gorgeous tight-bubble head. Not crystal clear — there’s a little protein haze — but we can see through the fog and into the bubbles. It’s got presence.

Smell – 4.5
Full-on grapefruit right up front. That familiar hop note — almost like machine lubricant — but in that classic American IPA way. It smells… furious.
No mistaking this. Clearly an American IPA.

Taste – 4.25
After that fun aroma and the initial hit, there’s a significant clamp-down bitterness.
Is it furious? Maybe not.
Is it assertive? Absolutely.
Is it enjoyable? Yeah… yeah it is.
The bitterness doesn’t just show up — it settles in. Lingers. Makes a point.

Mouthfeel – 4.25
Yeah.
Is it hoppy? Yeah.
Is it aggressive? The hoppiness is.
ABV 6.7% — you’re not afraid of me. It drinks firm but not reckless. Medium body, structured, confident.

Overall – 4.25
This one’s been on my want list. People talk about it like it’s PBR-level iconic in its own lane — regional legend energy.
Is it iconic? Not yet for me.
Never heard of you before this… but now I have.
It’s bold. It’s unapologetically American IPA. It doesn’t beg you to like it.

And yeah — don’t look at this score too hard. It’s just a holding place. I definitely needed to review this one... With another take.

Furious?
Maybe not furious.

But I'll have another please!

Revisited April 3rd 2026...
This one's still stands up, need to load a six ! Simcoe hops... I'm getting a little fruit loop aroma... With that bitterness... I could be wrong but that's what my palate reads today ;)

Hopheads rejoice! Wonderfully well balanced, tasty, hoppy ipa with great palate heft & aroma + malty/piney flavor & not too bitter for 100ibus. Very clean finish & dangerously quaffable & smooth for a 6.7%er.

Had no clue this brewery I’ve heard of in the past via ranking/ clout was now available in TX until I spotted a box of sixes at a local H.E.B. Of course I pick that up. Also got their Axe Man too. Tough to go wrong if one already likes tasty IPAs.
Slightly hazy deep copper pour, thick finger of head.
Nose is bread/ caramel, pine, underlying fruit possibly. Something there but nice and subtle.
Right off the bat there’s a rye aspect for me on this flavor. Maybe it’s the Scottish malts? It’s good though. Bitter and aggressively hopped, with grounded pine notes.
Feels quite creamy and medium/ medium carbonation. Kicking bitter finish.
Rick solid example I’d revisit anytime. At least five more times guaranteed for now.

Clear, amber color. Big, off-white head. Pine, citrus, and malt in the aroma. Hoppy taste with a malty backbone. Strong bitterness. Classic of the American IPA.

12 oz. can poured into tall tulip glass
(best by 6/29/25 printed on bottom of can)

L: amber/dark amber topped by thick head of beige/tan foam at least an inch tall; head retention is strong, and it's very sticky; keeps a thick collar of foam and most of a skin; almost crystal clear with loads of red in it, has that old school American IPA look back when you could find several with pine tree notes (Chinook hops? Centennial?); some lacing on the way down

S: caramel, mango, cantaloupe, something green underneath ... green onions, cilantro; very biscuity, almost bready from the malt; maybe some hints of stone fruits, peaches or plums; the caramel sweetness is arguably too much to the point of smelling sickly sweet

T: bitter ... much more bitter than the nose would suggest with citrus peel and melon rind, earthy flavors that linger; as it warms, the caramel/mango flavor is trying to push through the bitterness, creating a kind of piney note

F: thick and fluffy, light from the carbonation but still full enough to be a solid midweight

O: I've never loved that caramel/mango thing in this style of IPA, but that's personal preference, not a comment on the quality of the beer, which is obviously well within the lines of the American IPA; the caramel malt is strong in the nose, but the hops rule the flavor even with this beer within a couple months of his best-by date; my review numbers will reflect my bias against this style, but anybody who loves that caramel-piney style of IPA will love this
