16oz can poured into an oversized tulip. Canned on 11/21/13

A - Off-white head looks delicious! The beer itself is deep amber coming in on the dark side of the style. Tons of sticky lacing all down the glass.

S - Great meld of citrusy cascade/centennial hop blend. Mild pine leaning more towards tropical aromas. Pops from the glass. Little bit of sweetness, toasty malts.

T - The hop flavor here is truly unique, it dominates like I've never experienced. The flavor is distinguishably pine hoppy yet is surprisingly tame in relationship to bitterness. There are some toasty malt towards the backend but subtle. Crisp dry finish.

M - Medium body, dry as can be, medium-light carbonation.

O - Total hop flavor but doesn't crush in bitterness. Complex and refreshing.

Judgement - Hard to beat this caliber of IPA.

Reviewed from notes after having on 12/20/13. Enjoyed out of a tallboy can with a canning date of 8.13.13 marked on the bottom. Poured into a 50 cL glass stein with a textured exterior.

Appearance - Pours a deep ruby orange hue with a fair amount of haze. It's like glowing copper, with shades of burgundy where the head obscures the light coming through. Atop the body is a one finger orange-tinted creme-colored frothy head that hangs around for a few minutes before dissipating to a virtual fog of suds across the surface of the liquid. Lacing is like a mottled net of residue on the side of the glass. A truly beautiful beer that looks somewhat like an American amber ale.

Smell - Grapefruit and orange zest are at the front of the nose, but they evolve into less citric and sweeter notes like pine resin, caramel malt and English toffee. There is also an earthy, mineral quality too, but in a good way.

Taste - Here the hops and grain bill do less of a one-two punch like in the aroma and combine for a blend of both characteristics. Citrus and lemongrass along with pine cone and burnt sugar; a nice complement of bitter and sweet. Notes of the earth and sun tea are both present as well from the substantial malt background. Caramel malt is again a major player in the profile.

Mouthfeel - Body is on the fuller side of medium, with moderate carbonation, but plenty to keep it nice and prickly throughout my enjoyment of the beer. Finish is semisweet with faint lingering bitterness.

Overall, a delicious beer that has a full-on duet going between the hops and grain. Big hoppy citrus and pine but plenty of malt to balance it out. I'm a huge fan of hop bomb IPAs, but I must say that I really enjoy this take that is more balanced. It still has plenty of big flavors.
