Heat Slayer pours a blonde color, with a nice sized head. Creamy buttery aroma, a little weak. Flavor is the same, very crisp, with a hint of bitterness. Good body and feel. Overall, just a solid kolsch.

Clear, bright golden color, small but lasting head of ivory foam above. Looking very nice.
In the nose: light and floral, slightly grainy, just a touch of fruity sweetness, way off in the distance.
In the mouth: Crisp, dry, just a touch bitter. A little bit of fruit, melon, apple, backed up with a smack of hops. Light and easy drinking. Very mellow, very cool.
So this one is light, dry, crisp and, yes, "crushable", as everyone likes to say these days. Some day they'll tire of it. I hope. And it's a bit hoppier than I'd prefer, but this is the Surly way, after all. A purist would condemn it. I'm not that much of a purist, but I could go with a little less bitter, and more from apple and pear. Those delicate fruit notes that the kolsch yeast gives, in the true interpretation. Which this is not. (Help! I'm caught in a time loop!)
Again, though, this is the Surly interpretation. They never said they'd be true to style. And I could definitely toss a few back without a quarrel.

Appearance: Pours a completely clear, golden color that is bubbling. A crisp white head that fades. SRM of 7. (4.00)
Aroma: Nearly nothing on the nose. Some subdued lemon citrus. Maybe traces of sweetened orchard apple or grape jelly? (3.00)
Flavor: Lemon citrus, and peppery hops. Some German cracker and honey cereal grain malt. A slight tart and astringentness, but without much flavor. Some light sweet apple on the back end. Light hints of Surly's yeast in here. Very tame. (3.75)
Feel: Medium bodied, but highly carbonated and crisp. The carbonation makes it finish dry. A definite sour astringency on the finish that is reminiscent of juice. (4.00)
Compared to Surly First Ave 7/25/20: Pours a lighter color. Milder aromas. Less flavor. Less overall, but slightly more astringent and crisp. Winner: First Ave
Compared to Insight's Brewing Old One Eye 8/3/20: Pours a slightly lighter color with a stronger head. More German cracker aroma and lemon citrus. More apple juice sweetness on the end. Winner: Heat Slayer
Overall: Extremely light and crisp. A shallow representation of the style. There's nearly no flavor/aromas here. It has an astringent and peppery feel, but the flavor is muted. Some lemonflower and German cracker. I guess it would slay the heat, but could use more flavor for sure. I've had better representations of the style, but it's definitely a summer drinker. (Final Rating: 3.73)

Poured from a can into a tap glass.
Pours a crystal clear straw/gold with fast-subsiding head but excellent bubbly (nice big bubbles by the way) carbonation throughout. A nice-looking summery brew.
The nose presents with hints of grain, grass, and floral notes. Not strong, but not unpleasant.
The flavor is a solid straight treat, and stronger than the nose. Plenty of tart and fruty graininess and a touch of spicy yeast up front at the tip of the tongue, with a good lemony/citrus finale.
The mouthfeel is the star of the brew. Light, crisp, and with a touch of tingle on the tongue. Super drinkable.
Overall, this is a nice-looking, very drinkable brew that has some fairly strong flavor for a lighter offering.

I'm trying this beer at Bodegas in La Crosse, Wisconsin. It poured a clear golden with thin white head that did not leave much lace. The scent had faint grain and biscuit notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with yeast base and mellow citrus accents. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a good beer.

12oz, canned on 03/20/19. Crystal clear and pale golden body is capped with a fluffy white head. Spicy, earthy, and grassy noble hops with a biscuity malt presence for aroma. Flavors mimic aroma with mild nutty and biscuity malt pairing well with the spicy and grassy hops; a touch of fruitiness from the yeast comes through in the aftertaste. Lighter body, easy drinking, modestly bitter finish. Solid summertime beer if the price is right.

Pours a bright light yellow with a thick white head that drops away quickly leaving slight lacing. Aroma is citrusy with a bit of biscuit. Flavor is lemon, biscuit and grass. Feel is light and nicely carbonated. Overall an easy drinking beer but not special.
