Lightly hazy, crimson colored, large, creamy ivory head above, lasting long, and leaving lace.
In the nose: Richly, caramel malty aromatics hit the nose first. Lush and lively. Earthy, spicy hops.
In the mouth: Hops shine first on the palate, bright and citrus-y, but quickly swallowed up by malt, spicy, rich rye malt. Hardy, robust, and lively. Fruit flavors unfold. Sweetness creeps in. I believe I read someone somewhere someone's description of "candied grapes", and I get that, too. Dark fruits, spicy malts, altogether tasty. Good rye IPA, and you can drink it.

I got a can of this beer from a beer store in La Crosse,Wisconsin. It poured a hazy copper with thin white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent had subtle dank ripe fruit notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink sweet malt base and subtle dank hop highlights. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall its a good beer.

12oz, canned on 12/13/18. Thanks to my friend, Derek, for giving me a can to try. A huge frothy ivory head leaves chunky lacing down the glass as it slowly fades atop an amber colored ale. Earthy rye and pine with hint of citrus for aroma. Good bold flavors of piney hops, grapefruit, caramel, bread crust, and earthy & spicy rye. Fuller body, very resinous, ample carbonation, pungently bitter finish with earthy pine resin lingering. Good Rye IPA. I'd like to try it a little fresher to see if the hops pack a bit more of a punch. Either way, this was still good and recommendable.

Poured from a can into a tulip.
Pours a hazy copper with a two finger foamy head and good lacing.
The rye aroma is strong in this one. Malts strong with an equal dollop of piney hops. Unique, but a bit odd.
Caramel malts and rye very present on the tip of the tongue, with orange zest and pine across the mid palate and a drying alcohol-tinged finish. Uniquely flavored, but the sharp rye clashes with the sweet caramel of the other malts and the resiny finish.
The mouthfeel is a bit heavy for a single IPA. It could use a touch more carbonation, and the finish is a bit sticky.'
Overall, I'm glad I tried what is a unique brew, and I appreciate Surly taking a run at a truly rye-heavy IPA. But the flavors here clash with each other just a bit, instead of balancing one another.

Really good hop flavor with a good finish. Personally a favorite for me over Furious hoping it comes back next season.

60 Below pours a dark copper color, with a long lasting and nicely lacing head. Spicy aroma, big, hints of earth and hops. Flavor is very full, big grainy and malty backbone, with hints of earthy hops, and spices. Good body and feel. Overall, very big, full bodied Rye IPA.

Pours a slightly cloudy dark amber with a thick tan head that has great staying power. Lots of lacing. Aroma is piney hop forward with rye. The flavor is rye bread and pine. Feel is heavy, but well carbonated. Not a bad beer but not one I'd look for again.

My first offering form Surly Brewing...and I like it...
Bought a variety 12-pack of Surly and I am finally getting around to cracking open the first of six different brews - this one their rye IPA called 60 Below. When I poured it out of the can it poured a very clear, very clean, burnt-caramel colored liquid. This liquid then proceeded to pour out a thick looking head which had good staying power and decent lacing down the glass. The scent of the brew was very hop-forward, somewhere hiding in there was a wheaty-scent, but I think I went dizzy trying to find something else to note. Mouthfeel was medium-bodied, lightly carbonated and very, very dry - quite possibly the driest brew I've ever had. And now this brings me to the taste - hop-forward like the nose - almost like a double IPA in my book, but still with a distinct flavor or citrus that was discernible through all that bitterness. If you like your IPAs bitter (and I mean bitter) this is the brew for you.

Poured cold from 12-ounce can into a vintage bow-tie glass. Appearance leaves little to be desired. Hazy, copper-amber color, with a thick light tan head that eventually settled into a thin cap. Lots of sticky lacing, too. Lots of caramel and peppery spice on the nose and palate, with citrus zest and pine resin providing balance and plenty of bitterness. Nice warming character as the beer approaches cellar temperature. Finish is quite dry, with a little lingering bitterness on the back of the tongue. Outstanding, easy drinking, and a great food beer.
