Very Good
Rocket SurgeryRocket Surgery
Notes: This juicy, hazy ale is brimming with Citra and Simcoe hops for a fruit-forward blast of hop flavor. Drink it. You’ll like it. It’s not rocket surgery, it's Rocket Surgery.

This one's being billed as a "hazy ale", not an IPA, but not a pale ale, either. So, that means that it is a pale ale. Because no brewery would miss an opportunity to label a beer an IPA, and pale ale has lost it's luster. The fact is, beer drinkers want pale ales, even if they don't know it.

All hazed up. Bright golden golden, ample layer of ivory froth.

In the nose: Citrus hops. Grapefruit and lemon. Encroaching sweetness.

In the mouth: Mild bitterness at first. Juiciness on the palate, plenty of hops delivered on the tongue. Bright and delightful. Medium bodied, easy drinking. This one is tasty, and fuzzy, and in the hallowed tradition of hazy, but lighter and lower alcohol. So, go drink it.

From a 12oz can:

Appearance: Hazy yellow, good head.

Smell: Danky aroma.

Taste: Moderate bitterness, mostly balanced citrus flavor.

Overall: Another from Surly's hop pack. At least it doesn't taste like orange juice, which is my main issue with haze bombs. Still has some balance and bitterness, pretty solid.

Had Rocket Surgery Hazy Ale poured from 12-oz. can, bottom stamped “CANNED ON 06/21/19,” into tulip pint.

This is a better than average session IPA, with light malt propping up some tropical fruit and a citrus rind bite finish.

Poured from a can into a nonic pint glass.

Pours light hazy, but not cloudy, gold with a fabulous bone-white foamy head. The retention is so-so, but the lacing is solid and soapy.

The aromas are simple citrus--white grapefruit and lemon--followed by hints of tropical (pineapple and mango).

Ultimately an APA, not an IPA, on the tongue, but the hops are a little strong for the style. Restrained malt honey and graham sweetness on the tip of the tongue, herbal and grassy hops mixed with cracker in midstream, and very measured earth on the finish. Fairly well balanced, it nevertheless ends up tasting a bit like an APA that is trying to appeal to the hop-head crowd..

The brew is medium bodied and wants for a bit more carbonation. But it is very drinkable nonetheless.

Overall, a solid APA that could use a shade more carbonation and a touch less hops.

Appearance: Pours a pale, hazy, yellow, off-white color. So pale. A light, crispy white head. (3.5)
Aroma: Strong aromas of pineapple, citrus, and pine. Classic NEIPA aromas. Some slight orchard or tropical fruit, but really it's mostly pineapple, foresty pine, and some orange citrus. Some milky and orange juice combo bitterness too. Pale malt if any. (3.75
Flavor: Flavors are actually less than the nose. Some pineapple and pine mostly. Mild pithy pineapple bitterness. Slightly more bitter and ripe than the nose. The flavors are less, but could be expected for the ABV. (3.25, okay)
Feel: Very light bodied and crispy. Not creamy. Very dry but not lingering so. (3.5)

Overall: An extremely light-bodied and crispy version of a NEIPA. It's not your local-dry hopped shipment that was made last week, but it is another good version of a more macro attempt on the NEIPA style. Lower on flavor. Airy and juicy pineapple, pine, and juice. It's good, there are just earlier and better similar representation. (Final Rating: 3.46)

12oz, canned on 06/21/19. Thanks to Ken for giving me a can to try! Hazy yellowed body with a frothy off-white head that sticks to the glass. Juicy tropical fruit hop aroma of passion fruit, pineapple, and citrus. Flavors are heavily tropical fruit with notes of fresh pineapple, passion fruit, lemon, and floral hops; malt is mild with a bit of wheat in there. Lighter body, moderate carbonation, balanced finish. Easy drinker with some good juicy flavors.

After having Dots & Loops a couple nights ago, I firmly believe Surly should give up on NE IPAs. But hey, this came in the mix pack, so here we go. 12 oz. can.

At least this one looks right, though melony, not juicy. The nose brings a mix of melon & pineapple that I approve of.

Rocket Surgery isn’t as objectionable as D&L, Salt ‘n’ Pepa, or Jar Jar Binks. It’s just kind of routine. They hit the juicy mark at least, with the aforementioned melon, pineapple, oranges, & citrus, plus a sliver of bitterness on the finish. Grainy & rough. Certainly not tough to drink.

Surly – stick to lagers, West Coast IPAs, & big stouts, or hire somebody from Trillium if you want to get in this game. A pretty good effort, but not up to the standards of an elite brewery like Surly.
