Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.30%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
It's been said; "Its easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA Bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surly's a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day it's just a beer. If yo like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanyboys grab it.

Appearance: Gold, particles in suspension, nice carbonation, good head.

Smell: Piney, not too strong.

Taste/mouthfeel: Mild breadiness then shifts to sharp bitter pine and citrus. Long lasting bitter finish. As it warms up, a little more sweetness comes in under the bitterness. Light, crisp feel, doesn't feel like over 7%.

Overall: Picked up a 4 pack and it's another winner from Surly. Sharper bitterness than Furious or Abrasive in my opinion. Not too heavy. I didn't get a lot of aroma from it, but my nose is pretty bad. A very good beer for getting your hop fix.

Canned on 4/2/13.

Appearance: Pale golden with good clarity and a lot of effervescence. About one finger of sudsy off-white head.

Aroma: A pleasant hop-forward blend of pineapple, grapefruit, citrus, and a touch of pine.

Taste: Along the lines of what I expected from the aroma but definitely some moments of greatness in there. First half is on the sweeter side with a dab of caramel malt flavor and a very light bitterness. As the bitterness intensifies in the second half the hops lend flavors of citrus, pine, and a few succulent moments of a mango/passion fruit character during the finish. I'd clock the IBUs in around 100, Surly never skimps on the consumer in that department. Unlike Abrasive which has oatmeal added in the mash to smooth out the flavor, Overrated has an in-your-face type of bitterness that lingers nicely in the aftertaste. Good and dry finish. Most definitely qualifies as a West Coast IPA, and a very good one at that.

Mouthfeel: Medium in body with aggressive carbonation. Above average drinkability.

Final Thoughts: What you've got here is a very good beer. However, I think Surly jumped the gun by naming it "Overrated" because it really isn't so spectacular that the joke works. But I think their point has been made: Surly brews good beer and at the end of the day that's all any of us care about. As a side note, this beer tastes an awful lot like Summit Brewery's Saga IPA. Would I drink it again? Yes, one of my favorite beer styles from one of my favorite local breweries.

Love the can. Surlys product design is always as good, and sometimes better, than there beer. From the can into my imperial pint glass.

Pours a honey gold with a nice two finger cream head. Decent retention and lacing. Tons of fine hop particulate floating about.

Like Furiuos and Abrasive, you can smell the hops as you pour. The nose s like sticking your face in bag of Cascade hops. Tons of grapefruit and pine. Subtle but present bready malt.

Bam! Hop punch to the tongue. Classic West Coast IPA profile. Grapefruit and pine throughout, some bready, slightly caramely, malt keeps things in check. Bitter hoppy finish.

Medium in body. Medium in carbonation. Bitter and dry in the finish. Clean, but the mouth just right.

Overall, this is something Surly has yet to do...they fell in line. They brewed something to style, and they did it masterfully. As a West Coast IPA this is nothing mind blowing, it doesn't push the style, it's no Alpine Nelson. It is, however, another impeccably crafted hoppy ale, from the best brewer in this fine state. Maybe that's homerism, but like Surly, I don't give a damn. This is a fine beer. Drink em if you got em. Cheers!

Serving glass: Poured from can into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Rich golden color with decent white head and some lacing.

Smell: The aroma is typical for when a Midwest brewery makes a "West Coast IPA" - grapefruit, pine and toasted malts all mixed together and milder than anticipated. Maybe some light tropical notes.

Taste: Nice grapefruit, orange and tropical flourishes over a toasted malt backbone. Finish is very piney, bitter and spicy, along with a hint of berry from the Mosaic hops.

Feel: Medium body with moderate carbonation. Fairly smooth, creamy and very, very dry. Great IPA mouthfeel.

Overall: Not quite up to Surly's IPA standard set by Furious, Abrasive and Wet, but that is like saying that Oahu is not as good of a vacation spot as Maui, Kauai or the Big Island. While the Midwest-made West Coast IPAs are not my favorite, this is much better than most. Nice job.

A= Pours a hazy bright orange color with a nice finger of foamy head leaving behind some decent lacing along the sides of the glass. Orange IPA's are my weakness.

S= West Coast Style IPA for sure. Loads of just straight dank hops. Smells like a fresh opening from a bag at Northern Brewer. Really powerful hops.

T= What do you know the taste is "mega hop". Punches you right in the mouth with a huge hop flavor. Big piney citrus notes. Very resinous and full of nice pollen. There is actually quite a nice buiscuit backbone to it what while it isn't a major flavor offers a little relief from the assult on your taste buds from the hops. Your burps taste like hop pellets.

M= Typical clean refreshing west coast IPA mouth on it. Leaves just enough cover on your pallet.

O= West Coast IPA is what they wanted West Coast IPA is what they get. This is exactly what I expected from Surly and they certainly delivered. Imagine a West Coast IPA done by Surly and you know what it tastes like. If you are fortunate enough to live in this great state do yourself a favor and buy lots!

16oz can, born on 4/2

Typical orange-amber look, good lacing/head blah blah blah.. Tons of fine sediment in there, which I like. Smell outta the can is pure hop pellets. Very leafy and dank smelling. When poured there's a lot more biscuity malt and orange marmalade. The taste is like a cross between Stone IPA and Two Hearted. There's the leafy hop pellet aroma/taste of stone, and the medicinally bitter, almost metallic, citrus two heart taste.

Tasty, almost sour, tangerine/lemon hop goodness. Did not disappoint.

Poured from a 16 oz. can into a Surly tulip glass. Canning date of 04/02/2013.

Appearance: Pours a bright copper golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid three fingers of white head that slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A crisp and juicy aroma of citrus hop esters and biscuit malts. Citrus hops upfront with good hints of orange, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, tangerine, and lemon. Solid hint of pine hop spice along with floral hints and grass. Solid bready malt backing with hints of biscuit, caramel, cracker, and yeast. Also some noticeable honey like sweetness. Smells like the West Coast style with the citrus presence although there is more of a malt balance here. Pretty good aroma.

Taste: Nicely juicy like the nose hints with a solid taste of citrus, pine, and bready malts. Citrus hops upfront with a juicy taste of oranges, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, tangerine, and lemon. Notes of spicy pine resin and grass along with some floral notes. Hops are lively but not overly bitter. Good malt balance with notes of bready biscuit, cracker, caramel, and yeast along with a little honey. A really well balanced citrusy taste that leans towards the West Coast style. Very good.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very crisp, clean, and nicely creamy. Juicy and slightly oily. Very smooth with a fairly drying finish.

Overall: Another good one from Surly. A very different type of IPA than Furious. A pretty good take on the West Coast style. Similar to their recent Bandwagon IPA.

This is not the in-your-face hop slap you get with most Surly brews. Hops in the nose and definitely hops on the tongue. Hops lean towards the piney. But the hops aren't the only show. Decent malt base. Good body with some substance, not thin. Leaves the lips a bit sticky. This is an IPA that could easily be a session brew.

The head poured thick and stuck to the glass for the entire drink. Beer is honey-colored and clear.
