750ml bottle. Yellow gold wax over cap.
Cloudy, reddish muddy brown colored body. Brief off white head. No lacing.
Aroma of caramel apple with cinnamon. Some vague wheat and rye malts.
Taste is sweet, with some tang similar to a sour apple. Caramel, with some spice that has a little zing in the mouth. Banana and clove esters have disappeared. Felt alcohol is more in the nose than a burn on the tongue.
Medium mouth feel, with a smooth texture. Okay carbonation.
This has aged into the port or barleywine territory. Still a tasty sipper.

a monster strong ale, old now, presenting itself as much like an english barleywine as anything else. the words accompanying the awesome art on the bottle inform me that this is the first beer they had ever done with wheat. some rye and oats in here too which is cool, i havent seen a ton of multigrain belgian type strongs like this, i would have loved to taste it fresh, as after an extended cellar stay, the grain nuances have all sort of melded together into a big cereal cacophony, and its hard to appreciate each individuals contribution to this. the other thing i kind of miss is its belgian essence. the yeast is here, some fading esters of pear and fruity candy, but the booze, the oxidation, and the malt sweetness all sort of cover that up, i bet this had a much different kind of balance when it was first brewed. heavy body, a little spice to it from rye and yeast together, and an english sort of breadiness, doughy even, but warming and well refined. lots of alcohol here, still lots of sweetness, but quite a unique mix of flavors with notes of bran and raisin and toffee and wood, its earthy and rich and very tasty. its also still really well carbonated and the bubbles move it along before it can get too sticky or heavy. i have enjoyed drinking through some of these old surly anniversary brews, this one has obviously changed a lot but is still a great drink for a cold wintery night!

2013 vintage purchased 6/13...poured 5/16.
A - normal, straw color with 1/2 inch white head, no lacing and minimal retention.
S - Mild sweet/sour mallt, only a hint of hops.
T - Non-dominant Belgian flavor accompanied by a good blend of slightly sweet malt and well-balanced, but generally lighter, hops. A great American interpretation of a Belgian Strong Ale. Alcohol is well masked (vs. 2014 tasting, which was still a bit hot). I have to believe the 2013 is peaking or n ear peaking about now.
MF - Just right for this style. Definitely lacking, but clean...just the right viscosity.
O - I wish I had shared this with others. Three years really made a difference. No longer hot. For my liking, a subdued Belgian yeast flavor. But, top of class.

Bottle share thanks to Steve. Edging towards sour, tart and tangy. Medium amber, soft soapy head. Soft yeasty notes. I wish it went more solidly in one direction, than trying to span genres.

Poured from cellared bottle, burnt orange with fluffy white head. Scent of malt, spice, citrus. Flavor is spicy, clove, banana, malt with unique citrus and boozy backbone. Moderate carbonation and mouthfeel.
