nice lacing of tan head, lasts throughout. very nearly black, with only a little light shining through the edges.
aroma suggests a sweeter beer than the flavor, interesting cocoa powder, caramelized sugars, seems sort of like a sweet stout. faint spicy hops behind roastiness. no esters noted.
Flavor is more scorched, charred meat, smoke, with a bit of an unsweetened dark chocolate/dark roast coffee bitterness. moderate hop flavor and bitterness is quite high; seems almost American stout. balance is to roast, lingering sharp but short of harsh. The initial meaty char is my least favorite part, but lessens as it warms in favor of more rich/less acrid character. moderate sweetness almost manages to balance bitterness.
though plenty of roast, it isn't astringent, and finishes clean with a medium full, moderately creamy body, and moderate carbonation
great beer; tweener stout. kinda a bit dry stout, kinda a bit sweet stout, and a nod to American stout. basically, a little of everything, almost like an imperial stout just scaled down a bit. (bottle says 7.5% and 45 IBU) the work of a skilled brewer; well done.
