Caged and corked bottle poured into a tulip. Batch 137.
The appearance was a straight up pale brown color with a cap of a little white foamy head that dissolved at a nice pace. Soft filmy lace ran around the glass nicely and spread apart in a fairly nice looking spider web fashion.
The aroma had a soft sweet floral to spicy rye character opening up on into some caramel malts (very smooth). A collective embrace of tobacco earthy and grassiness played with a little bit of some Belgian sweet chocolate and wafer-like character. Light component of "smoked meat"/somewhat like ham on the back end.
The flavor moderately presented a keen balance between all of the previously mentioned aromas and adds a nice sweet touch of some candied orange. Nice gentle aftertaste of the candied orange, Belgian sweet chocolate, tobacco earthiness and rye sweet and spiciness.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation seemed to sputter just a little bit (yes, seemed a bit under but I would say, just starting to fall off [wish I knew what the date was which coincided with Batch 137]). ABV seemed just a touch under than what was projected, but I wasn't bothered by that. Semi-sticky rye floral-like smoked meat-like and candied orange finish.
Overall, not much of an American or an English Barleywine, but also not much of a true Belgian Dark Strong ale either. Though this one seems to have lost it's identity, it's quite good and well worthy of more pours by me if I could get it again.

Orange and brown mixture, kinda meh foam. Aroma came off boozy, earthy.

Taste was a lot of caramel, minimal sugars. Rye is always difficult for me to distinguish the heavier the beer gets. The earthiness and lack of greater hopping made this one straddle the line between English and American barleywine.

As far as a Belgian strong ale goes, doesn't quite a live up to the style. The only thing strong is the ABV which does not come through in the taste or smell.

As for a Belgian that pairs well with food, this is a great choice.

Low rating for style but would give it closer to an overall 4/4.25 for a nice drinkable beer. Think more of a Belgian Amber if there is such a thing. Lighter in color, carmely in aroma with a lighter mouthfeel.

If you know what to expect, this is a nice choice.

Appearance is very nice with huge, cream-colored, slow to settle head, lots of sticky lace, and a clear honey amber color. Aroma is immediately caramel malt, then wet grain, no hop. Flavor's similar to nose, carbonic tang and malt is in front then some sweet which eventually brings in some bitter for a long bittersweet finish. Some booze at the end there too. Body is very good. Decent beer, but not remarkable.
