Style: Extra Special / Strong Bitter (ESB)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Champion Best Bitter of Wales 2009 & 2010. A very pale, straw coloured, aromatic Best Bitter, brewed with Northdown, Challenger and Bramling Cross hops. Spicy and aromatic aromas give way to a long and satisfyingly hoppy flavour – a full and refreshing beer.

Bottle into Grolsch pint glass in low altitude Cork, Ireland. Reviewed live. Acquired for 2.10 euro at Abbott's Alehouse, Cork.

A: Pours a two finger head of nice cream and thickness, but only average retention. Clear yellow colour.

Sm: Lemon citrus esters on top of a cream/barley body foundation.

T: Hoppy body and climax with citrusy subtle ester hops. Nice barley foundation absent of cream. Not quite balanced in that the esters dominate the body. Built poorly for the style, but it should be said that it thankfully omits an overabundance of bittering hops. Most poorly built ESBs overuse bittering hops, but not this one.

Mf: Smooth and wet, but tamed by a certain faux-syrup quality which is actually quite nice. The mouthfeel doesn't match the body, thankfully.

Dr: Cheap by Irish standards, but you get what you pay for. I.e. crap, in case that was in any way unclear.
