Brewed at the Weltenburger Monastery, which was founded in 45 AD, with the brewery established in 1050. This is the world's oldest dark beer. A true experience of flavour. Full bodied, with fine malt aromas. Slightly bitter with some sweetness, creamy and with the warm colours of amber, intensive flavour and fragrance. Brewed in the traditional monastic manner, it's regarded as one of the great beers.

The pour is mahogany colored with a moderate amount of carbonation. The taste is dark fruit, brown bread, with hints of molasses & toffee. Cheers! A-

Copenhagen 11/10 2025. 50 cl bottle from Meny, Nordens Plads, Frb. F. Simple white label with a drawing of the brewery in the middle of nothing and a simple coat of arms.

Pours clear dark mahogany with a mid-sized off-white head. Stable, Settles as a paper thin yet frothy layer of foam stretching to cover the surface of the beer. Substantial lacing.

Aroma is medium intense with a sweet and toasted malty odor mingling with a bit of alcohol and dark fruit. Sweet caramel, toasted bread, toffee and a hint of brown sugar. Plums and raisins.

Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, lightly tingling texture.

Flavor is medium intense with a rather strong sweetness followed by a moderately strong bitterness. Aftertaste is lightly bitter with a distinct sweet undertone Lingers for a while. Finish is semi-dry.

Fine German Dunkel - a bit on the sweet side.

500ml bottle in my home bar in the Alps. Poured a nice dense cream colored head. Dark amber colored beer is almost chestnut brown, and loaded with streams of bubbles. Aroma is all malt, fairly sweet, and reminiscent of a doppelbock. Moderately sweet malt with just a bit of cocoa. Mouthfeel is soft with just a bit of fizz from the carbonation. Sweetness fades in the finish and leaves with a bready cocoa flavor. There is something about the mix between the aroma and the taste that follows that makes this beer above average.

A very good Dunkel. Aroma and taste are mild and drinkable. All the German beers were really good at the Fest. This one taste stronger than 4.7 ABV.

Oldest monastery brewery in the world, had to pour it into a Notre Dame glass!
Pours mahogany with a darker head. Bready nose with notes of caramel and toffee. Aromas move to the taste with some dark fruit and herbal notes. Very solid 1,000 year old dunkel.

11.2 ounce bottle, and I have no idea what the date stamp/freshness code on the label is supposed to mean but it says 332 O 074 2 but it's also kinda hard to read. Thanks to Brutaltruth for this bottle! Served in a pilsner glass, the beer pours a clear amber/copper color with about an inch or so tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, the brews smells like caramel, dark bread, toffee, nuts and some herbal hops. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also the addition of some chocolate and a bit of dark fruity flavors. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and easy enough to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good overall dunkel, worth trying if you come across some!
