Had from a hand pump cask at Triumph Brewing Company in Princeton, NJ on 6/11/11. This is a take on an ancient brew by the Picts, who were early inhabitants of Scotland using heather. This version uses heather tips and other herbs.

Appearance: Very clear brown/amber color, decent tan head, left some lacing

Smell: Very light on the malt and hops, the primary player here is the heather used in brewing, present but not overwhelming, a light smokey smell with some floral and herbal components

Taste: Again, the heather is the main part of this, a light flavor that resembles herbal tea. Lightly smokey, floral, herbal, interesting not overly complex flavors

Mouthfeel: Light body, creamy smooth, decent carbonation

Overall: Pretty good. The brewers call it a "real ale" and it is served at 50-55 degrees, and I feel that is an appropriate temperature for it. Complemented the Triumph Burger (and fries) very well, would complement anything savory. Not the most complex or flavorful, but still quite exceptional.

First had: on tap at the Garden State Craft Brewers Guild 15th Annual Beer Festival, USS New Jersey, Camden, NJ

Poured a hazy brown with a nice frothy white head. Light aroma, malt, peat, spice, perfume. Very nice taste, clean, and pleasant. Herbal, floral, spicy, but not overbearing, smooth malts balanced nicely with crisp hops and spice. Smooth, medium mouthfeel. Wasn't incredibly distinctive, but soooo easily drinkable.

Pours a brown amber color with a half inch of off white head. There is no lacing or collar at all.

Smells of herbs that I can't place, caramel, toffee, and an interesting combination of a delightful smell that I wasn't able to place.

Taste opens with these unusual herbs and finishes with the malt. It finishes very clean and very nice.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Its a great cask beer.

Overall, its really good. Very impressive beer that I was not expecting.
