750ml pink-painted bottle, with a simple voodoo doll stabbed through its heart with a pretzel shard sort of label imagery.

This beer pours a clear, dark cola brown colour, with three fingers of puffy, thinly foamy, and yet somewhat creamy ecru head, which leaves a few swathes of spooky webbed lace around the glass as it quickly dissolves.

It smells of a soft raspberry juice fruitiness, biscuity, bready pale and caramel malt, bittersweet chocolate, a veritable salty cracker astringency, other subtle drupe fruit esters, a touch of oily nuttiness, and mild earthy, leafy hops. The taste is like raspberry chocolate ice cream, in a pretzel wafer cone - mildly fleshy ripe raspberries, lightly sugary cocoa powder, and subtle, but it's there, salty, biscuity bread sticks. A bit of earthy nuttiness, gritty pale malt, and slightly musty, leafy hops tries, with little success, to remind us of this offering's beer origins.

The carbonation is tame, fluffy, and generally just good and frothy, the body a standard, pleasantly rounded medium weight, and actually quite smooth, with a certain milk-like creaminess. It finishes well off-dry, the weird blend of milk and dry chocolate holding tight, the raspberry continuing its hard fade, and the bready, pale, and yes, pretzled (excuse me a sec while I add this word to my browser's dictionary) caramel malt sealing off the exits.

I believe that this is the first Voodoo Doughnut offering from Rogue where all three guest stars represent, and mesh well as they work together to provide a decent-tasting brew. The raspberry may have faded, sure, but its memory remains by the end, where the pretzels' zing is equally dulled, and the chocolate reigns supreme. Oh, and there's a basic American nut brown ale underneath it all, as well.

Appearance: Pours pretty dark brown, thought it was opaque but when I held it up to the light I could see very dark brown hues around the edges. Pours with a very thin white head.

Smell: Smells very sweet, definitely notice the chocolate but think the raspberry is my my main takeaway. Smells like raspberry chocolate candy which I guess I must have had at some point in my life.

Taste: Positives and negatives here. From the smell I was worried this would be too sweet. It is not. Definitely pick up the chocolate which is just slightly bitter, and notice secondarily the raspberry sweetness in the aftertaste. The chocolate is more of a bitter chocolate (like coffee) rather than sweet. Negatives are that the flavor isn't actually that strong, very light touch. Would have preferred something a little heavier. The taste hits your tongue quickly and moves on.

Mouthfeel: Light, bubbly, more dry than smooth. MF of a session beer.

Overall: Liked the smell, liked the initial flavor, but not enough body for me. Enjoyed the bottle but would have liked something with more depth. After every sip I was waiting for something more complex and it never came.

750ml into 25oz snifter.

A: Pours very dark mahogany brown with a frothy, dense, and thick light brown head that slowly faded into a thin but lasting fuzzy film.
S: Definitely smells like a raspberry jelly doughnut! Raspberry really stands out and smells very gooey, sweet and jelly-like, very much like the synthetic fruity sugar they inject into jelly doughnuts. I get a few scents of chocolate glaze and doughy pretzel as well. Very interesting and strangely and unexpectedly inoffensive.
T: Follows the nose but thankfully not synthetic or cloyingly sweet. Jammy notes of sugary raspberry jelly mix with light notes of sweet chocolate icing and doughy pretzel that mimics a cake doughnut. Finish is sugary and granular, and the aftertaste has a hint of Dr. Pepper and lingering chocolate icing.
M: Medium full body, soft carbonation, slick and drinkable mouthfeel.
O: I hate to say I enjoyed this one. Very good for what it is. Does taste just like a jelly chocolate doughnut.

Call me crazy, thanks, after reviewing the brilliantly odd Sah'tea by Doghead Fish I felt I was on a roll so I cracked open a bottle of the weirdest and most outlandish brew I have ever seen from Rogue - Voodoo Doughnut Pretzel, Raspberry & Chocolate Ale. Upon then I realised I would have probably preferred the Voodoo Doughnut Chocolate, Banana & Peanut Butter Ale. Oh well, I have Pretzel and Raspberry, shut up voice in my head.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Chimay chalice.

A: Body is a deep deep murky seal brown, too dark to tell if it's cloudy or hazy, with a khaki lace ring around the glass, looks quite alright actually...

S: Milk chocolate and baked pretzel dough is immediately noted off the nose - if this brew proves to be as comforting as the two we're on to a winner here. A second sniff reveals characters of sweet raspberry jelly doughnut filling. As far as fulfilling the name goes Rogue have done that here, with flying colours I might add [I DID add].

T: Raspberry comes out immediately with a sweet but tart flavour, really ruins everything else as this becomes more of a raspberry brew and less of a chocolate/pretzel ale. Yes there are notes of chocolate, and a microscopic hint of pretzel (undoubtedly bolstered by the yeast) but this is almost purely an exercise in raspberry - and for that it loses me. Call it a "raspberry ale" if it's going to taste like raspberries. The finish is dry and slightly tart.

M: Good medium body here with a light carbonation.

D: If this was called "jelly doughnut with a light chocolate frosting beer" we would have a winner on our hands but as it tastes this is not as advertised regardless of the fantastic ingredients involved. It is though a decent raspberry brown ale from Rogue, whom I have much respect for, the only thing that is lacking is the ingredient proportions (i.e. more pretzel and less raspberry).

Food match: The flavour dictates dessert however the palate cleansing abilities of this brew make it savoury-worthy - you decide.

Appearance - pours a finger if lite tan foam, color of the body is a nearly opaque dark brown color, very little lacing or retention.

Smell - the nose is perfectly raspberry and sweet milk chocolate

Taste - much like the nose I do get raspberries coated in a semisweet dark chocolate, I also get roasted malts that impart a baked crust flavor but nothing identifiable as a pretzel specifically.

Mouthfeel - almost medium, carb is medium and smooth but still provides some tingle along the sides of the tongue. Finishes slightly bitter and dry.

Overall - a very interesting beer - the flavors of raspberry and chocolate are done well, and there is definitely a roastiness at the end of the quaff, but there is no distinguishing pretzel flavor or any saltiness present. I tried this because my friend had a bottle, I would not purchase this on my own. But don't let me dissuade you, give it a try, if you like raspberry and chocolate.
