Appearance - Pours viscous and black with a cocoa colored finger's width of head. Good retention, resulting in a thin layer of surface suds. Small, spotty lacing around the glass with good stick.

Smell - Somewhat tame on the nose, but what's there elicits notes of deep roast, chocolate and anise. Astringent character starts to display as the brew warms.

Taste - Big dark notes that hit on baker's chocolate and deep roast coffee. Very little in the way of sweetness; this is an all-out attack with blackened bitterness as it's battleaxe. What little sweetness there is comes across as dark and jammy. Hints of anise and ghostly traces of oak woodiness. Finishes with a bit of astringent coffee and alcohol character.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied, with low carbonation. Creamy with a silky smooth finish.

Overall - If there's one thing Rogue excels at, it's stouts and porters. This one is no exception. Unrelenting blackness, and I love it. The barrel aging adds just a faint touch of oak in the flavor, but is quite a bit more noticeable in helping to smooth the delivery of such a monstrous brew. Think Old Raspy turned up a notch, then smoothed out with oak. Maybe closer to an RIS in taste, but the ingredients and oak barrel aging say otherwise. In any event, it's a damn good Impy.

Thanks, John.

An impressive inky black with a dense, oily dark brown head with nice retention and lacing. The nose is impressive. Plenty of dark roasted malt, moderate bitterness, licorice, a savory, meaty mildly soy like note and a moderate barrel character. The Rogue imperial stout is a pretty hilariously over the top beer, and this beer is a toned down version of that beast. This also means that the beer's able to handle the rather intense oak barrel character with vanilla and some charred wood. Nice. On the palate, it is similar with a big base beer with licorice, molasses, a wonderful roasted malt bitterness, bitter dark chocolate and some coffee grounds. The mid palate has the oak and vanilla with the moderate tannins lingering on into the finish. Full in body, thick and chewy without being too sweet , this beer DS softly carbonated and is a bit of a decadent treat. Recommended.
