I found this 650ml brown bottle at Sal's Liquors in Addison, IL. I've tried a lot of stuff from Rogue, but never saw this one before so I brought one home. I find it strange that the name is Mom's Hefeweizen but the Rogue website says it's a Belgian blonde ale. It's brewed with rose petals for the mother in all of us.

The beer poured a slightly cloudy golden yellow color with a huge 3-finger white head that lasted awhile and produced some good lacing.

The beer had an herbal and citrusy smell to it with a touch of rose petals - not very hefeweizen-like.

Herbal and spicy with a little sweetness from the wheat malts. There is also some lemon and orange citrus underneath with a bit of bitter orange peel taste from the hops. The spice may be clove, but there's no banana flavor at all, so it doesn't fit the typical hefeweizen profile.

It's not bad, but if you're expecting a typical hefeweizen, this isn't it. I would like to hear why Rogue is naming this beer Mom Hefeweizen, but then lists it as a Belgian blonde ale on their own web site. It doesn't make any sense. Those are two completely different styles.

Light to medium bodied with medium carbonation.

22oz bottle. Wow, I petitioned for this one to be split out from the regular Mom Hefeweizen a while ago, looks like it's time to finally take advantage of that. Miss ya, mom.

This beer pours a mostly clear, medium golden amber colour, with two pudgy fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and rather bubbly ecru head, which leaves a band of pockmarked stone wall lace around the glass as it slowly and evenly subsides.

It smells of bready, doughy pale and caramel malts, indistinct garden variety citrus notes (but not my garden, obviously), a soft hard water flintiness, ethereal Turkish Delight, and soft earthy, herbal, grassy, and yes, floral hop notes. The taste is grainy, gritty pale malt, a weak caramel sweetness, a touch of wheaty and yeasty spiciness, some tame, but still noticeable oil of attar, blended light orchard fruit, and more leafy, herbal, and additionally floral hops.

The carbonation is fairly low-key, just a meek frothiness underlying all, the body a sturdy medium weight, and a tad sugary in its otherwise appreciable smoothness. It finishes off-dry, the bready wheatiness, and still well understated floral character playing us out.

Yeah, without it being explicitly stated on the label, I might very well have attributed the rose petal essence to any manner of hop presence in this brew. Still, a wheat beer with more to recommend it as a witbier, rather than the German version as such. Overall, easy enough to drink, with a subtle rosiness that I'm sure my mom would have approved of wholeheartedly.

Poured from a bomber into a wine glass.

LOOK: Hazy burnt yellow with a thin fizzy head.

SMELL: Not much of anything, except a distant fruity sweetness.

TASTE: Lemon, apple, orange, biscuity malt, pepper, clove, and rose.

FEEL: Amply carbonated, but very watery.

OVERALL: Well, this was a disappointment. I'm glad I received this as a freebie. Not worth paying money for.

A: Nice head to start, but the bubbles are pretty large and unstable. Predictably, the head dissipated quicker than I'd have liked, but it left enough lacing to satisfy my visual requirements. Nice bronze color. Pretty clear for a hefeweizen, but nice.

S: Some spice and a hint of floral, but nothing too overwhelming on the nose. Not much of the professed rose. Not much of the typical hefeweizens. No clove. No banana.

T: I get hit immediately with spicey esters of coriander. Interesting. Some wheat, but not pronounced. The floral rose comes through a bit, bit is in the back, not at all overwhelming. Comes off slightly timid, or balanced, depending on how you want to look at it. I like it, but I love the style and am a huge fan of floral flavor profiles, so I'm partial. All in all, a bit underwhelming and I think they could do this better. That by no means makes this a bad brew!

M: Much lighter body than expected. Watery almost.

Overall: this comes off more like a white beer, than a hefeweizen. But it's a nice brew to enjoy, whether or not mom is around.

Didn't quite hit up to a hef by def and I was hoping for something more out of the rose petals. Could have been a bad bottle.

Poured from a bomber into a weizen glass on 05.08.14.

A: See through gold/yellow. 1 finger head.

S: Spices, coriander, orange peel.

T: Orange peel, rose petals, wheat are dominant. Coriander is subtle.

M: Watery, but whatever.

O: I liked this one. It had a lingering sweetness and it was very citrusy. I really think that it was more of a wit than a hef. Regardless, I won't support Rogue anymore from what I've heard about them.

I concur with the previous reviews: nothing stands out. Watery even. Not getting any rose flavor. Expected more. Still love Dead Guy though.
