Thrasher suggests, results may vary. Hes right. I sat next to Thrasher as we each downed a pint of Über Pilsner at the Rogue Public House in Portland. Mine showed a matted, pitted head with dispersed threads of lace. Thrashers showed neither head nor lace. Same tap, same beer, served minutes apart. I must have gotten the cleaner glass.
Be that as it may, I cant say as Im charmed by the style. I like pilsners as the delicate, nuanced gems that they are. The style calls for a small bodied but crisp, flowery beer, not the muscular powerhouse of an Oregonian überbräu. But if I were unduly constrained by stylistic standards I would never drink Rogue in the first place.
The Über Pilsner has a slightly greenish hue to its otherwise golden body. It is coolly clouded and has a raw grainy aroma with a wortish essence. The aroma is potent, exhilarating, and oddly reminiscent of rye bread. The taste reflects these wortish properties though I wouldnt go so far as to suggest low attenuation. The flavor is also crisp with a lemon-pine-straw bale element that works nicely. Pilsners dont often boast of mouthfeel and Rogues is no exception.
This is a hearty beer with a particularly enticing smell. As with other Rogue beers, its best to disregard all expectations of style and simply enjoy.
