from a 22oz bomber into a pint glass pours a very dark amber brown color with a fluffy tan head that sticks around for awhile. smells of roasted malts, slightly fruity and smells very good. taste is mainly of roasted malts, slightly nutty with a slight bitterness. mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium-bodied. this was a very good beer but rogue definitley has better offerings.

Poured from a 22oz bottle, beer appeared very dark brown with some light showing through and red highlights. Small head dissapated quickly with minimal lacing.

Smell was uneventful with maybe a hint of grain like alfalfa. Hard to make sense of the smell.

Initial taste was odd the way it hit my tongue. It finishes mildly bitter and nice. Again, I'm detecting some sort of grain like alfalfa. A light citrus flavor in there like grapefruit. Nothing too complex in it but it works.

Mouthfeel is light/medium for such a dark beer. Foamy on the tongue and a little tannic at first. Can also feel on the back of the throat.

Drinkability is very good. This is a strange beer because nothing stands out and its hard to put your thumb on why its good, but I like it and could definitely pound a few of these down in a session.

A - Black/deep brown with reddish highlights

S - Slightly floral, wheaty aroma

M - light bodied, dry feel with sweet finish

T - Fruity, meaty wheat-like. Slightly citrus perhaps hops or yeast flavors. A subtle spice flavor akin to ginger or cinnamon. Not an overwhelming amount of flavor but light buckwheat or soy elements for sure.

D - a mellow easily quaffable brew. I appreciated the dark soba elements, but they don't really take the spotlight. A dry ale taste is the major factor with smooth creamy wheat tastes. I would give it another go.

A decent beer. Nice head that stays around for a while. Nice chocolate malt and buckwheat smell. Taste is better than the regular obi. While, this beer is dark, it is very smooth and light (you know what I mean). Very easy beer to drink. A nice beer in the fall. Very light and thirst quenching. One of the few dark beers I can say that about.

This beer poured a thick black with a nice light tan head – tight bubbles. The aroma is spicy and malty. It has a roasted taste that is balanced by a molasses like sweetness. There is a refreshing spice that adds a little extra in this ale. The mouthfeel is full, but short of chewy. This is an interesting beer which I’d consider quite drinkable.

Really dark brown, tan head kicks up quite a bit for such a dark and viscous beer. Good lacing early on tells me this one packs at least a solid hop punch. Foam stays for a minute or so. There's a strong roasted scent, it's different than barley and closer to wheat, but the roast is so powerful that it's a little intense. There is no real sweet aromas, but there might be some bitter chocolate back there too.

Burnt coffee with solid mouthfeel is what the flavor reminds me of. There's a touch of a nutty component to the flavor that's hard to put a finger on, very dark chocolate waves from behind a tree, solid bitterness that doesn't break through the dark fruit malt characteristics but adds needed balance. The finish is slightly dry, fairly smooth, but quite assertive with hop bitterness and whole grain roast.

It's not the most refreshing but it's certainly an interesting take. I would have to take this one over the signature buckwheat ale in most circumstances. It's unassertive enough to pair nicely with a lot of foods, just beware the aftertaste and keep around some water.

This beer pours very dark with a slight brown tint and a light head the settles into a good lace. It has a toasted fruity smell that fills the senses. The beer has a smoky roasted coffee flavor that settles into a chocolate tone. It has a creamy fell what goes down smooth. It finishes heavy with a hops after taste. In all this is a very good beer with a smooth quality.

Had this in the fridge for almost a year now, waiting for the right meal to consume with. Decided to make some shiitake and broccoli stirfry and pop that bottle.

So.... hmm. Super dark - darker than Guinness. Low amount of head so I poured hard and encouraged the bubbles - thin head still here after half the beer.

It's really roasty, can't really decipher a "soba" flavor, but I do like the mouthfeel - thick but dry finish.

Me likey - would buy it again to drink with a teriyaki steak or maybe some roast duck.

22 oz bomber

Almost black with some ruby notes around the edge. Creamy head that dosn't hold as long as i would like. Smell of roasted malts but I also picked up some distinct cascade hops grapefruit in the first wiff. The roasted flavor takes over and pushes the hops out of the picture. Some chocolate and coffee tones in the taste. Mouthfeel is on the thin side but that isn't exactly a bad thing. There is so much flavor in this beer that it stays interesting all the way through. Fruit/vegetable beer dosn't really give you a feel for what this beer is, I would describe it as a scotch ale. Nice beer that is worth seeking out to try.

22 oz bottle into snifter. A: Very dark, a light head that died down fairly quick. S: Roasted malts, soy sauce, very light hops, hints of coffee. T: Surprisingly light, black tea mixed with buckwheat, bitter finish. M: Fairly thin and smooth, not much carbonation. D: Overall, it's a really interesting beer. Not my favorite Rogue offering, but unique enough that it's definitely worth a try.

22oz bomber into mug.

Deep black hue with ruby highlights and a one finger than head that slowly settles to a thick cap. Solid lacing.

Dark malts, a little bit of spice, and a little bit of cherry.

Roasted malts meet a dark cherry flavor mixed with a little bit of coffee. Medium bodied with good carbonation. The finish is a little watery with some of the dark grain and cherry remaining.

This one starts out complex but quickly fades in flavor. It's similar to a porter, but a little lighter. Worth a try.

Had this at Parallel 33 last night with dinner. Having tried the soba ale and enjoyed it this defnitely was something i was interested in. This was also the best beer on their list.

A- Poured out a dark chocolate brown with a nice head. Decent head retention and plenty of lace.

S-The smell was dominated by roasted malts with a breadlike component to it.

T-The first thing that hits you is the aforementioned roasted malts followed up with a pleasant sourness from the buckwheat. In this it is very similar to the regular Soba Ale. I think the sourness, roasted malt flavour and just a twinge of sweetness make this a very well rounded beer.

M-Very much like a porter, good carbonation maing this very good with my niman ranch ribeye I was eating as it cut through the fat.

D-I could have alot of these. This is a well made beer and right up my alley. This makes a perfect pairing for a rich piece of meat.

Pours out of a 22oz. bomber bottle into my Sly Fox pint glass a deep dark chestnut brown that allows very little light pass through. Head is about two fingers deep and light tan in color. Smells of roasted tree nuts, and sweet caramel. Tastes of roasted nuts, molasses and pungent, bitter citrus fruit. Quite rich in the mouth with a high level of carbonation. This was a really unique beer, for me at least, and one that I would re-visit on occasion.

This brew pours quite nicely. There's a lot of CO2 here, which produces a nice light tan head that lasts almost to the end from a 22oz bomber. This is very dark and pretty much looks like a porter. It smells like one too. Roasted malts, but I detect a small grape like aroma. Tastes pretty much like a porter to me. This is full bodied, but is crisp and refreshing. It finishes a little powdery.

A: Looks a lot like cola. Same sort of color with the same amount of light coming through. Head is good finger high, nice creamy character with roasted marshmallow color to it.

S: Roasted barley, chocolate milk, soap, dough and brown sugar.

T: Starts off with mild roasted coffee, little bit of vanilla and minor chocolate milk. Some toasted bread comes next with lick of smokiness to it. Red fruits come next accompanied by metallic twangs and nutty aspects. Finishes a little buttery with a gentle hop kick.

M: Medium body with a full and creamy mouthfeel.

D: Not bad, a fairly straight forward beer. Goes down really easy though.

Deep, deep brown color-just bordering on black. Nice thick tannish head on top. Low aroma-just a touch of maltiness to it. Good malty flavor. Just a hint of some roasted malt. Somewhat of a nutty flavor-very slight black pepper spice to it. Kind of earthy and musty flavored. Good body-crisp dry finish. Very drinkable beer. I did not know what to expect and am pleasantly suprised.

I enjoyed this beer much more thoroughly than the regular soba. Not quite as odd. Actually quite tasty, at that. Looks great on the pour. Dark brown with a hint of an amber hue. Monumental off-white head with great retention and lacing.

The smell is great. Has the familiar aroma of Rogue's pacman yeast, though the diacetyl is offset by a light pleasant berry fruitiness. The taste is quite similar, but the pacman taste is much stronger. Has the odd buckwheat flavor familiar from the Soba/Buckwheat Ale, but it works well with the other flavors. A light berry flavor compliments well.

The body is thick and creamy. Very good. Light carbonation. Has an odd, dry diacetyl finish with a lingering taste of buckwheat. Could be better, but I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed it compared to the Soba/Buckwheat ale.

Appearance-Very dark. Just a hint of deep, dark blood red. Almost no head at all.

Aroma- Not overly complex. A nice, sweet maltiness. Very light hops. Fairly crisp and clean.

Taste- Hard to put a handle on it. Very little malty sweetness. Not dry either. Slightly bitter. Some coffee undertones. Not real impressive, but not bad either.

Mouthfeel- Not bad, not impressive. Decent carbonation level, but not so overpowering you lose the aftertaste.

Drinkability- Not a beer I plan on buying again, but I wouldn't tell anybody not to buy it either.

Say this one hidden behind some bottles...hope it's still good...

Mid orange tones with hazy clarity. Thin white head with lacing down the sides. Slight aroma, hard to describe. Mostly malt taste with little to no hop. Sweet notes. Very easy drinking. This would be a nice starter to the night. It's great after work...

Poured out a dark brown, near black, with a bubbly thick light caramel head. Nose is a bit sweet and fruity, soy sauce, and some slight metallic notes. Taste is a light malt, roasted coffee, tiny bit of bitter chocolate, very faint amount of hops. Finish is fairly big and bitter, lasts a long time.

Morimoto Black Obi Soba Ale
22oz bomber
Recent bottling, dorinku 11/06
Medium pour in an English pint

Poured dark brown with mahogony highlights, with an average mostly diminishing fizzy very light brown head.

Smelt of moderate smokiness and brown sugar and light molasses.

Taste was upfront strong bitter and moderate sweet and sour burnt cookie feel followed by a strong nutty slightly piney bitterness with light molasses on a long finish. Mouthfeel was light to medium, oily, fizzy, and moderately astringent.

Overall, this beer is interesting, the taste is unique, as there is a sweet and lightly sour feel that clings all the way through the tasting session. The rest is kind of bland and usual though.

Appearance: Orange/red with a light white head... not much to say about this.

Smell: Honey, caramel, ginger, and a light hint of hops... this smells like the best APA I've had in a long time. Not that I'm saying it's an apa... it just has some characteristics of the kind I would like to smell.

Taste: This is kinda disappointing... slightly citrusy and piney hops mix with ginger and honey. Not incredibly present or deep... or likeable. It reminds me of the honey ginger beer done by sam adams for their colonial brewers set.

Mouthfeel: Citrusy, acidic, bitter, light bodied and crisp...

Drinkability: Too busy for my palate, but intersting non-the-less. I won't have this again unless it's paired with the perfect food.

Deep, dark purple-brown beer topped by a big tan head that went away in a hurry. Sour and fruity smell. Very nutty and toasty.

Have to credit the fruity/nutty taste to the soba, I guess. The Soba Signature from Rogue has the same quality. This one has a touch of charred malt to boot, but it's less sweet. Pleasant bitter finish. Pretty fizzy. It's light, and that feels right.

Maybe more drinkable than the regular Soba Ale, because this one's more like beer. An interesting, light change of pace.
