The colour is orange-yellow-amber; the liquid is a bit hazy. The finger thick head is beige and compact; it leaves some lacing.

The smell is hoppy... oh so hoppy! Citric notes; bitter oranges, oranges, grape fruits. Bitter flavours, of course, but also a fine sweet flavour of honey and brown sugar. A very mild earthy note and a touch of tobacco smoke. A demanding bouquet: Great stuff!

The taste is at fist a little sweet. Then it becomes very sweet and a little spicy. And then, the hops kick in. It is not as aggressively bitter as many other DIPAs, it is more focused on the citric hoppy flavours (I prefer both ways!). Sweet notes of honey and caramel. Then, the citric flavours emerge with notes of orange peels, grape fruits, bitter oranges and a touch of lemon peels. The aftertaste is bitter with sour hints of lemons, grape fruits and lemon peels. Some mild sweet notes too, as a touch of earthy yeast and a mild metallic note. The finish is very long: Bitter hoppy flavours and herbal notes.

Why not 5.0? Well, I would have liked some more potent bitterness.

The carbonation is mild, the bubbles small, and the liquid rich thick and smooth.

A very fine ale in all ways.

Bottled, 2010; drank early 2013.

Cloudy bright orange.

Minimal white head; thick lace.

HUGE mango, pineapple & orange nose. This smells great!

Medium thick mouthfeel.

The flavor follows the nose, with a strong, almost over-the-top bitter finish.

This was bottled 3 years ago, but tastes fresh as a daisy. I'm blown away; wish I had a bigger bottle!

[Original rating 2013-06-18] Draft at the PDX bar. Served in a big heavy goblet. Pours clear dark gold.with almost no head. Aroma is citrus, spice, apple, sweet malt. Taste is similar, bitter hops up front, then sweet, then back to bitter for the finish. I’m glad the wife encouraged me to get one more before the flight.

Beautiful clean copper apperance, one finger of not so beautiful off-white foam.
Smell. Well. Hop.
Malt, caramel, hop. Challenging. American hops, with a lot of resinous.
In the taste a lot of malt and caramel, then an intense hop, grapefruit and piney.
A lot of piney in the aftertaste too.
Then tangerine, citric, and floral notes (some geraniol).
Long, long hoppy aftertaste. Pine, tangerine.
Good easy beer...

My absolute favorite imperial IPA. This is NOT a beer to have with your meal, as it should be savored all by itself. I was fortunate to have it served on tap at The Strange Brew in Manchester NH, but alas, it is only distributed in bottles now. If you like full bodied, medium malt, heavily hopped and complex big bears, this should be on your bucket list. Cheers!

Mixture of gold and amber in the appearance, small 1/3" white head. Aroma is lots of pine and citrus, orange.

Big bitter c hops all up in the taste, its one of those 100+ ibu type of ipas. The alcohol is big but not overpowering, you just gotta show it some respect. Really comes out as it warms.

Its a sticky resinous, kind of viscous kind of ipa, the mixture of Cascades with some Saaz type of hops is interesting, but ultimately seems like they just went big without any fine touches on this one.

A 750ml ceramic and wingtop bottle with no bottled on or best by date. Poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Appearance: It poured a hazy amber orange copper colour with a one finger dark-ish cream coloured head that dissipated fairly quickly but left nice lacing.

Aroma: Sweet caramel malts with juicy orange, tangerine, grapefruit and pine.

Taste: Much like the aroma, sweet citrus tangerine and orange, some light caramel followed by bitter grapefruit pith and pine. The finish is a nice lasting citrus bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall: This was a pretty good Double IPA with a good balance between sweet and bitter. A little more carbonation would have been good, but nonetheless still nice.

Pours a medium to dark bronze amber with a half finger dark cream colored head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, lightly grassy and citrus hops, dark stone fruit, a hint of oxidation; profile of an aged American barleywine. Flavor follows with mildly earthy caramel malt , grassy and citrus resinous hops, and a hint of oxidation. A lingering hop infused malt finish with moderately high bitterness. Medium bodied with light creaminess. This is a vintage bottle of unknown age or storage, although all the beers in this group tasted as if they were properly stored. Sadly, Rogue did not date this bottle (or even put the ABV on it), but from experience, I think this was from around 2010, as that's when they used these big black pottery bottles. If so, it has held up quite well. Like many IIPAs, this aged much like a heavily hopped barleywine. I don't know what the fresh hopping flavors were, but this has a definite old world flavor, reflecting the Saaz hops that are listed as used in this. The more fresh herbal notes of pine and citrus are much muted. However, the aged hop flavor is nice and well balanced with the good caramel malt body. This was a pleasure to drink and I'd have no problem getting it again, but I doubt I will find this unknown vintage again. It was good enough for me to seek out a review a fresh one in the future. An odd rare treat.
