American Amber Ale is the second-ever beer created by Rogue’s brewmaster John Maier. This tawny amber brew with a toffee aroma, delicate roasted malt notes and smooth finish displays what beer judges call the “perfect embodiment of an American Amber Ale."

*I purchased the "Rogue Sea Otter Amber Ale" in a 22oz bottle. Supposedly the Sea Otter Ale & the American Amber are the same thing, as when I went to review the S.O.A.A., I was directed to the American Amber page.*
Wow, this is a damn fine amber ale. The bottle text describes it as a "spicy, playful ale with a distinct character." I don't know about 'playful,' but I will agree with spicy & distinct.
Hops are very prevalent in this amber ale. That kind of took me off guard, since I have never really had an overly hoppy amber ale. I love all hops big & small, though, so extra points for that aspect. I would have to say the hops were more of the flavoring kind than the bittering kind. Very nice.
The Sea Otter Amber ale is very full and rich, much like all the other offerings I have had from Rogue. Lots of body & flavor. All 9 ingredients are actually listed on the side of the bottle, including cascade & kent golding hops, and top fermenting pacman yeast.
Possibly my favorite thing about Rogue Sea Otter Amber Ale is that proceeds from the sale of it "support the Oregon coast aquarium and its mission to expand our understanding of the oceans" (Quoted from the text on the bottle). Extra points for drinkability here, since doing so will benefit something besides your taste buds.

12 fl. oz. bottle, as Rogue American Amber Ale, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. The beer starts pouring out of the bottle by its own will. Dark amber colour, moderate beige head. Malty and bready aroma, notes of bakery and caramel, also some fruity hops, hints of spices. The flavour is malty and earthy with caramel and toffee, decent hops in the finish.

12oz bottle
Pours two fingers of barely off white head into a concave water glass. Pretty normal looking, with a little soapiness as the head starts to fade. Head retention is a little above average, a pretty good film still lingers, and good initial lacing. Body looks more like a dark burnt orange than an amber. Visibility is low, looks cloudy. Looks like a medium amount of bubbles coming up. Looks very nice so far.
Nose is not amazing. Kinda has a characterless bitterness, with a one dimensional pale malt aroma. Almost extracty aroma. Not really any caramel or bread notes going on. It doesn't smell all too great.
Flavor is better than the nose thankfully. Medium amount of hops are here, which is an appropriate amount. The malt profile overall is a pretty good deep flavor, with a little rough spot at the end, but that's ok. Not getting too much extract flavor, which is good. Pretty well balanced. Good flavor.
Mouthfeel is good. Body and carbonation are about medium. Bitterness is appropriate and doesn't linger. Sugars do not stick, and it's sessionable. Nice mouthfeel.
The drinkability is very good. It's a well balanced beer that isn't too heavy.
The appearance turned out decent. Spotty lacing, but not terrible. Pretty good initial pour and retention.
Overall an interesting revisit to this beer. The nose was way off, but the flavor was about what I remembered it to be. One of the better beers from Rogue's flagship line, not quite as stellar this time around, but still a good flavor.
Note: Couldn't initially find a bottling date, but on further inspection I could make out a bottling date of 4 months ago. In an amber, I feel like that shouldn't make a huge difference. But maybe it was slightly oxidized, and that explains the nose? Regardless, I bought this from the brewery, and they should not be selling old product.

This is my favorite beer!!! Granted, I had it fresh at the brewery in Oregon. I love Rogue beers and highly advise going to their brewery. It's small, quaint, and feels like the quintessential essence of nature. Not too strong and not too light, it's the perfect medium beer! I wish they would sell it at a large scale because I live in Cali and can never find it.

Solid Amber/red, but might not be worthy of the $12 six-pack sticker price. Could use a bit more caramel.
