1 pt. 6 fl. oz. bottle, as Rogue Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Hazy brown colour, huge light tan head. Nice aroma of fruity American hops (Horizon, Amarillo and Cascade). The flavour has a considerable malty sweetness with hints of caramel, which probably is necessary to balance the 80 IBU. The fruity and resinous hops add more to the flavour than just bitterness, but the finish is nonetheless quite bitter. Good stuff.

This was a gift from a friend who moved away six months ago and gave me what she cleared out of her beer fridge. The reason I mentioned that is I have no idea how old this is (it's been in my beer fridge since she left) and this isn't the type of beer I'd choose to cellar.

That said, for whatever reason when I popped the cap it foamed all over the place before I poured some in a Nonic glass. There was an abundant light tan head, obviously, over a reddish brown body with extensive lacing. I was expecting the fact of this not being fresh to negatively impact the hops but the smell was still citrusy and piney. This was reflected in the taste overlaying a malt bottom with a fair degree of complexity. I'm not a big hops fan and this was more bitter than I prefer but this was a pleasant enough experience.

Bottle to pint glass

Strong hoppy aroma with some citrus. Hazy dark brown colors with a big creamy head. Taste is caramel, Orange, lemon, hops grains....a little overly bitter at the finish but good flavor overall. Mediocre for Rogue, but very good overall.

Rogue always impressed me with their wide range of flavor profiles. This is a very fruity, sweet smelling ale that is very easy to drink. The bottle is definitely a keeper as well.

Poured into a small chalice: color is slightly hazy amber, head is very light tan and presents about 1/2 inch thick with mixed bubble sizes, lingers well with good lacing.

Smell is moderate toasted malt, light breadiness, moderate hop aromas of citrus rind and herbs.

Taste is similar with toasted and bready malt, touch of caramel - not overly sweet, then hops takeover in strong form but not detracting. with light herbal and citrus notes with more bitter presence than flavor.

Mouthfeel is a bit stronger than anticipated and takes away from some of the subtler flavors - moderate carbonation, medium sweetness, but strong sharp bitterness.

Overall a slightly bready red ale with stronger bitterness than lingers throughout tasting.

From the 22 oz bottle in a snifter. This decent red pours a dark husky
red tinged brown color with a fantastic head of off white sticky foam
that settles to a thick ring, thick pooling layer, and showcases nice
sticky lacing. Nose of spicy hops, sweet caramel malts, and sticky pine
laden hops. Flavors lightly exceed the nose with sticky caramel malt
awash in layers of spicy hops and resinous pine hop flavors touched with
earthy malt notes on the middle to rear of the taste. Decent mouth feel;
medium body, lightly sticky from hop use, medium low carbonation, and
a caramel and hop infused finish.

Overall, a classic red pale verging on and IPA but still solid.

Cheers

Poured from the bottle into a glass.

Murky dark rust color.

Huge white head; spotty lacing.

Caramel malts dominate; hop backbone. Smells a bit like a barleywine.

Medium thin mouthfeel.

Tastes like a palatable barleywine, but ultimately this is too dry & bitter on the back end. Not awful but difficult to finish.

A darker SRM, this one seems like a red and a brown ale in the appearance at the same time. Good 1/2" head. Aroma kicked down some pine notes and was a pleasant surprise. Amarillo did good here.

Taste wasn't as hoppy, you get a lot of those darker malt notes. Chocolate malt interesting placement mouthfeel wise. At different stages of this beer you'll pick up on aspects of it that you don't normally have in the same beer.

Bomber format sucks, paying more per oz than you normally would, but at least they're painted bottles you can reuse easier.
