I was told this beer wasn’t going to wow me, but I decided to risk it. At 12.99 a bottle it certainly is priced to impress the hell out of me.
Pours a deep brown but not nearly black body. A tall head forms and dissipates almost as quickly as it formed. Doesn’t look overly thick but it is an imperial porter so I suppose that’s why this is a porter?
Nose has some roasted coffee, a hint of perhaps cocco, some vanilla, and surprisingly a LOT of hop character.
This just isn’t an “imperial” anything. I think other than a touch more abv than is needed there aren’t really any intense flavors here. The Shakespeare, oatmeal, and chocolate stouts all pack more flavor and cost less. You have some coffee, a lot of roasted malt flavors, plenty of hops for a porter, vanilla, and I suppose there are some chocolate notes somewhere in this. I’m not thinking mocha with this beer and I honestly do think that with their regular offering. Honestly, can I get some coffee flavor here?
Based on abv the body is about right though a touch thin. Based on the double rogue lable, it’s way too thin! The body really comes off medium for the stout/porter world. Almost watery for an imperial version. Alcohol is lower than most in these categories, but I can still taste it.
Lately I have been trying to give Rogue a chance. I mean they take up an insane amount of shelf space in a lot of places, and I know people buy their beer. The problem is they just make mediocre beer and charge absurd prices. They have less than 5 beers today worth what they charge for them. They choose the wrong format for most of their beers. They don’t bottle date. I’m sorry but Rogue seems hell bent on being a shitty brewer with great distribution.
FYI price was strongly factored into this review. This is a 36 dollar 6 pack equivalent which might be acceptable for a really world class beer. This is so far from it.

Pitch black; a little light comes around the edges.
Nice khaki head which dissipates; thick lacing.
Chocolate and cream in the nose.
Heavy mouthfeel.
Taste is of chalky dark chocolate; almost metallic upfront. Back end is all chocolate.
Slightly off-putting at first, but that chalkiness goes away as it warms. Overall very tasty.

Ah the good ol' days of the Rogue solid red (Double Chocolate) or blue bottles (this one). Pours a thick brown, lesser color brown on the head, 1/3". Firmly entrenches itself in between those imperial browns and a stout. Truly porter's realm. The aroma is pretty much devoid of coffee notes, there is a little bit to be discerned from the roasted malt, but ultimately for something with "mocha" in the name, it kind of comes up short of achieving that truth in advertising feel in the aroma department.
Taste is pretty good, I like the malt base, its a chewy thick porter, American in its hop execution. Seems like some bitterness provided but not a lot of flavor from the hops. Taste has more in the way of chocolate flavor than it does coffee. Does seem to hide the alcohol decently. Carbonation is moderate. At around $13 a bottle, you have to wonder what it would cost in a 6 pack. No barrel aging, no significant adjunct expenditure. . . I like the beer, but its not a repeat purchase in this format and price per oz all things considered. Try it once, but you'll prolly be good after that.

This big bodied porter pours a nice dark brown, almost black, with a nice thick head which holds for a while after pouring.I didn't get much off of the aroma, but for some reason that didn't matter when it came time to drink it. The taste is a very strong, pleasant, roasted malt with the bitter flavor coming through in the dark malt. The alcohol does not overwhelm the flavor and it is quite easy to drink. An excellent porter.
