Poured in a pint glass, color is dark brown head is tan, head presents about 1/2 inch thick.

Smell is simple, clean: nice roasted malt, smooth oatiness, light chocolate.

Taste is better than the aroma with a clean and smooth flavor, nice simple balance of oat, roast, and chocolate.

Mouthfeel is great, crisp ale carbonation with well balanced and lingering flavors.

Overall, a great, easy drinking beer.

Dark with a tan head, not too stiff, had to pour slightly aggressively to get much. Nose pleasant, more raisiny than many stouts of this type. Malts and some hops both obvious. Taste: nice balance and lacking the aggressive bitter hops edge that so many stouts have, but maintaining the actual bitter character that you'd expect. Dark malts, a bit of dark sweetness, of course. Mouthfeel creamy from start to finish, with a bit of afterbite. All together this is exactly what you'd expect from a competently made oatmeal stout, but this one is just more consistent, more balanced, than many of this style. All the parts seem to fit together more tightly.

Brown bottle poured into nonic glass. No date that I could find, but tasted fresh enough.

Pours pitch black into a tulip glass from a 330ml bottle. The head is tan and wilts from two fingers into cm froth after a short while, leaving moderate lacing on the glass.

The nose is all char, roasted grain, expresso, and bitter cooking chocolate, with a sweet fruitiness reminiscent of baked cherries, and earthy hops underneath it all. The aroma is overall very mellow, and there's something very akin to fine leather on occasion coming through.

One is smacked with more of that roast grain, char, burnt cooking chocolate, and expresso notes on the sip, before it morphs into oats, burnt toast, and large scale bitterness on the swallow. The aftertaste is all bitterness, strong cocoa, coffee beans, and charred grain giving it a very rich wallop. There is a fleeting sweetness which manifests halfway through as something almost fig-like, or plum-like before it bows to the enveloping rich character of the bitter expresso oatiness.

In the mouth it is medium-full bodied with some mouth-coating feel; carbonation is minimal, and alcohol dryness very low.

This is a very good stout, make no mistake; certainly it is rich and complex, and those big breakfast qualities do come through. If the flavours had more oomph, and the viscosity were more advanced I'd be loving this even more; I feel it just lacks in the thickness just that little bit.

NOTE: Mine says 6.5% ABV on the bottle, not sure if it's an addition.
