Roasted, earthy, burnt coffee. Good bitterness, a bit high carbonation. Very drinkable. Oatmeal astringency. A good session beer

When I think of an archtype, this is one of those. Classic formula. Hearty black pour, not used motor oil viscous but not coming in Newcastle brown ale thin either. Almost a full inch of tan head on the top. Aroma of roasted and chocolate malt, nothing done heavily but in conformity with style tradition.

Taste really hits the chewy and smooth notes, there's plenty of roast there, but it isn't acrid or bitter. The hopping is ample here, but never elevating itself beyond the malt. The format in a bomber is a little excessive price per oz wise, but its a solid beer.

12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date present. Finally getting around to reviewing this one from Rogue, acquired a single bottle of this stuff from the local bottle shop. Bottle doesn't really have much to say on this one - no abv listed either.

Poured into a Unibroue Maudite snifter.

A - Pours a thick dark inky blackish-brown body, super dark and close to opaque, especially for being an under 6.00% abv beer, the color is very impressive. One finger of thin bubbly mocha head that dies down to a bubbly ring quickly, leaving minor spotty lacing. Appears aptly carbonated. Looks very nice.

S - Aroma is rich, dark, bitter, & roasty. Huge notes of chocolate / cream / barley malt roastiness, lightly charred & ashy. Slight notes of mineral water, & dark pitted fruits.

T - Taste follows the nose: dark bitter, roasty, malty, chocolatey, with lots of burnt black coffee & ashy char in the taste. Again, slight notes of mineral watery & dried raisins / figs / dates. It's ok. Not particularly flavorful or interesting, for my liking.

M - Feel is smooth & creamy. Body is light & actually pretty watery for my liking. Lots of dark bitter burnt malts, black coffee, & raisins in the aftertaste.

Overall, it was okay. I thought it was average all around, and a bit too thin and bitter for my liking.

Rogue Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout, 5.8% ABV, 69 IBU. Pours medium to thick, black, with 4+ fingers of head, lots of lacing. Nose is malty sweetness and coffee, taste is malt, strong coffee, moderately bitter coffee close. Real nice mouthfeel. Overall a decent oatmeal stout, though could be a bit less bitter for my taste.

Black with thick, tan head. Smells very malty with hints of black olives. The taste is sweet and chocolately upfront, which is a little underwhelming. It's followed by a strong black coffee taste. The beer is smooth and creamy, but a little less carbonated than I prefer in my stouts.

Simply put, one of the best US made stouts. It has a creamy velvety feel, nicely roasted oats give it its characteristic flavor. Forma a nice head and it has a nice chocolate aftertaste that is not overwhelmingly chocolatie.
The Bly problem is the price at my local stores in Oklahoma... But that has nothing to do with the quality of the beer.

Dark espresso coffee color with small tan cap.

Aroma of roasted malt and dark toffee.

Coffeeish flavor of dark roasted malt. Some hops appear mid palate but show little more that a sub presence. Roasted bitterness in the aftertaste.

Full, almost creamy texture with good balancing carbonation.

For me the balance is tilted toward roast bitterness which is singing solo and louder than all the rest combined.

Poured into a Hefe glass from a 22oz bomber. Beautiful onyx color with an inviting tan head that had some serious staying power. The smell was pleasant with the expected malty, coffee notes. Mouthfeel was truly outstanding, rich and smooth, you are definitely drinking an oatmeal stout. Coffee was the predominant taste with a dose of hops at the end. Not an IPA dose, but the hops are definitely there. BTW, My bottle lists the IBU's at 60, while the beer info lists the IBU's at 69. If you crave mouthfeel, this is definitely the oatmeal stout for you. A bit too hoppy for this style which interferes with the coffee and roasted notes, but a top quality beer overall.

Pours Jet Black and dead, except for the big long lasting head that materializes out of nowhere. Aroma is licorice and coffee, heavy but not overly sweet. Taste is roasted everything, again mostly burnt coffee beans dipped in dark chocolate. While that sounds a little unpleasant at first blush, like chewing on charcoal, it's actually quite nice due to how tremendously smooth it goes down. The oatmeal does a nice job of taking the edge off, which allows all of that burnt stuff to create a nice multi-layered flavor profile.
