Review from 12/2010 notes. Poured into a Nostradamus flute glass. Pours a dark red amber. Moderate to thick muddy brown head with lacing. Malt and cola aroma. Flavor is malt and light fruit up front, followed by a medicinal spicy flavor that deteriorates into an estery, bitter mess. I can't even figure out what this tastes like, but there is a strong phenolic, estery flavor that is almost interesting, but is combined with a acidic bitterness. Interesting at times, but not well balanced. Don't think I'll revisit this one. Does not seem to be an old ale to me.

A- Dark amber color with a thin off white head. Head fades away quickly and leaves little to no lacing on the glass.

S- Bread malts, caramel, candied fruit, and a hint of sour funk.

T- Hints of hops and a strong note of candied fruit, golden raisins come to mind. The remainder of the middle is a balance of bread malt and sweet fruit. Finish is somewhat sweet and dry with a final note of candied fruit.

M- Medium in body and with slight carbonation. It's a little sugary sweet for my taste but it didn't present a problem with residual sugar building up on my palate. As it warms there are notes of alcohol that start to appear but they are not overwhelming.

O- Solid beer, old ales are not my favorite style but this was a pretty easy drinker, the 8.0% ABV is not hidden but well balanced, and there is some nice interesting notes going on it it.

Notes: Tried on draft at the Rouge Beer Ball, thank you Jim Cline for bringing this rare treat along to share. The keg had been aging for two years at this point.
