This is an absolutely atrocious beer. I love bacon. I love maple syrup. But together in this beer...oh dear lord. It doesn’t help that the flavor sticks to your palate, not that smokey bacon isn’t delicious, but in this context? I’m usually forgiving in my reviews, but this, this is just, guh. I’d rather drink the 22 of Brian Baroo I got one time that tasted like armpits than this.

Purchased as a "beer of the week" special at a local liquor store. After hearing the name "Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale", I had to give it a try. Pours a dense amber color with a bit of haze and lots of carbonation bubbles. Decent sized head that didn't last for too long. The smell was amazing. Seriously, it smelled absolutely delicious - like ripe, smoked bacon that had been covered in maple syrup. Like waking up in a cabin, early on a Saturday morning and someone is already in the kitchen, cooking bacon and maple pancakes. Hints of wheat and malt in the background, but the bacon-maple smell dominates, and it is amazing.

Unfortunately, that's where things head south. The taste is bad. Really bad. Especially after having such high expectations after the beautiful nose it gives - just SUCH a let down. The beer barely tastes of bacon or maple at all, rather all you can taste is carbonation and smoke. It was like carbonated liquid smoke with maybe a hint of malt and caramel in the background. But the smoked flavor was so intense that it was harsh, dry, and did not feel good on the back of the throat. Body was thin and had too much carbonation to be enjoyable.

All in all, one of the worst beers I've tried. Perhaps the disappointment is magnified by the fact that the beer, in theory, sounds, and smells, delicious. It is everything BUT that. One of the only beers I couldn't finish. Very upsetting.

750mL bottle poured into a tulip.

(A)- Pours a hazed caramel colored amber with some white froth forming.

(S)- Crazy smell. The combination of hickory smoked bacon, maple syrup, and a sugary-like icing component; together makes for one weird but exciting aroma.

(T)- Tastes pretty much just like the smell. A strip of bacon drizzled with maple syrup, then wrapped around a krispy kreme donut.

(M)- Very bizarre, but it somehow works. Sweet overall, yet a little salty and savory all at the same time.

(O)- A very unique and bizarre beer to say the least. Very glad we split this 3 ways because I think this is a little TOO unique for one to drink a whole bottle my themself. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Would I have it again? Maybe not. Perhaps suited for being on the list of novelty-like beers.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had an amber color and a cloudy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy head that lasted a short amount of time. Very little lacing.

S: A nice aroma of bacon, malt, and above all, maple.

T: It's unfortunate that the flavor doesn't quite live up to the expectations built by the aroma. Yes, there is a definite bacon and maple presence (along with some malt and light hops), but it's not quite as strong and assertive as it should be.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a dry, smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Certainly one of the more uneven beers I've tried as of late. Not bad, but could have been better.

I poured this beer into a pint glass from a pink 22oz bottle. It has murky amber color body with a small head that quickly dissapeared. The smell is straight up maple syrup. the taste is sweet from the maple syrup, with a hint of smokyness on the back of the tonuge. Its like drinking breakfast. The mouthfeel is very nice and overall this is a good beer but very different and i could only drink one.

A-Deep amber, with some traces of cloudiness that turned light brown when held up to light. Poured very clean into a tulip Saxo glass.

S-I was extremely excited about this beer as soon as I took a whiff... although the smokiness dominated the aroma, there were clear hints of bacon fat, maple, powdered sugar, hickory smoke, and yeast. Very cool aroma.

T-Sadly, extremely disappointing. The variety of aromas fail to articulate themselves in the actual flavor, instead being grossly dominated by a powerful smokiness that should have been tamed. Furthermore, the smokiness itself is indistinct, and the finish is much too sweet. Ultimately, the experience is one of sharp, powerful smokiness followed by brief sweetness.

M-Also disappointing. Sharp at the onset, and then watery and indistinct once the smoky flavor starts to dissipate.

O-I'm a huge fan of Rogue. Their Dead Guy Ale deserves the hype it receives, and their Mocha Porter is my favorite porter on planet Earth. However, this beer needs more refinement and a bit more attention paid to the balance between smoked flavors and the "maple bacon" flavors. I would not recommend it to a friend.

A - Pours a muddied brown/amber color with a decent finger of light caramel color head with ok retention, 15 minutes later there is only an outer ring and a few spots of head across the surface. Lacing is so-so it doesn't really hang on the glass enough.

S - Sugary maple goodness, like pancakes. Pretty smokey too, maybe from the bacon? The bacon flavor itself is being missed. It smells like a delicious maple doughnut basically. Pretty simple but reallly good smelling.

T - A little bit of a let down. Still good and unique. Maple sugars up front, but its not overly sweet which is nice. The bacon is obvious but its not really great tasting, but it definitely puts off a really nice smokey flavor. I had bacon flavored gum once, it was disgusting, this is not disgusting but the flavor reminds me of a cross between a significantly better but not totally satisfying version of that bacon gum. Its pretty hard to get past the smokeyness/maple syrup/bacon flavor. Which I'm ok with.

M - Pretty good mouthfeel, medium bodied or less, fairly drinkable. The carbonation is a bit sharp, I feel like its not so much the carbonation but maybe also the taste that somehow make it feel more carbonated than it is, I really cant pinpoint it.

O - Pretty good, definitely something cool and different. Smell was great everything else was decent but not great. Like the originality though
