Dedicated to Crustaceans
The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer - just drink it and enjoy.

Poured out of bommber, into tulip glass : aged 5 months. Pours a hazy, no particles floating around, burnt orange to ruby red tones. Smell is apricot and dried fruit ie. Some apple, mango, smell has some depth. The taste is dried apricot, a little pineapple, some earthy bitter-hops. The hops bring a lemony and grassy aspect. Complex, and balanced. Medium-body not overly carbonated, creamy mouthfeel. Pair with rich crustacean shell-fish dishes such as Lobster in browned butter, scalloped withbrownded-butter, steak or lamb-chop "Oscar", or simply fresh crab fondue.

From the 22 oz bottle in a snifter via a friend from work---Cheers Kevin!

This beefy little beast pours a hazy brown tinged luminous amber color with a
nice head of white foam that settles to a thin ring, thin light swirling pool, and
shows some nice sudsy lacing. Nose of heavy caramel malt and sticky
resinous pine notes with some earthy malt notes and a touch of breaded
malts. Flavors expand on the nose with earthy malts awash in resinous
sticky pine notes with a moderate grain and breaded malt quality. A long
lingering bitterness resounds in the finish. Very nice mouth feel; medium
body, low carbonation, and a rigorous assertive hop and beaten to submission
sweet caramel malt finish.

Overall, very nice and reminiscent of Big Foot having a love child with Dead Guy
with the marital bed being that of heavy handed hops. Nice.

Cheers

Poured from a big blue bomber into a Dogfish Head tulip. Goofy crab-themed artwork.

L: Cloudy dark golden amber pour with 2+ fingers of foamy white head. Great sticky lacing. Chunky sediment at the end of the pour.

S: Stale-smelling hops... super malty. Resin and pine.

T.F: Big caramel malts... sweet toasted grains. Bitter pungent hops... still taste a bit stale to me, and they assault the sweetness rather than balancing so there are some flavors here that don't play super nicely together. Then again.. the booziness at 12% can cover up a lot of flaws and this isn't lacking for flavor. Pine and leafy... slightly medicinal. Thick and sticky on the tongue... well carbonated. Absolutely warming.

O: Kind of a hot mess of a beer... but with a lot of flavor and I can see what they mean. This isn't a barleywine... this isn't a DIPA... but rather something different and interesting... if not the most drinkable. That being said... I don't hate it... and it kind of grows on you as it warms up. Not one I'd seek out again, but one I'm glad I got to try.

Look- pours a hazy rusty orange with a 1 finger tan head that quickly recedes to almost nothing; spotty lacing

Smell- doughy malt, black tea, leather

Taste- starts off with sweet doughy malt and leather followed by an earthy, minty bitterness. At first the transition from sweet to bitter seems a bit sudden and harsh, but as the beer warms the flavors start to meld and it becomes quite enjoyable

Feel- medium bodied with medium-low carb; long bitter finish

Overall- A nice beer with some intense flavors that really come together as the beer warms towards room temp

This one pours a rusted looking light amber, with a small head, and not much lacing.

This smells like potent booze, big leafy hops, caramel sugar, and piney hops. This smells harsh and uninviting.

The taste is similar, as the flavors clash pretty horribly here. The dominating flavors are boozy and hoppy- as this is exceedingly bitter as these two flavors clash. It's pretty malty, but doesn't have enough richness to balance these flavors out.

This is also kind of thin, with a normal level of carbonation. It doesn't have much drinkability.

Rogue is far from one of my favorite breweries, and this beer only confirms that feeling. It may get drinkable in about 10+ years.

Pours an amber tinged gold with not a lot of head, essentially a cap and collar.

Smell is hoppy, but very malty. The booze is very present to my nose.

Taste is much like the nose, with the malts and hops reversed. There is a hotness to this beer, bringing that booze forward more than I would normally care for.

The feel is full and sticky, and there is a higher carbonation than I would expect from a barleywine.

Well, they call it in the title...not really a barleywine, sort of an IIPA. The fact that this one couldn't make up its mind certainly detracts from the overall enjoyment of this beer.

Blue 750mL bottle served in a chimay chalice. I've had this for a while and been saving it for a special occasion, so this bottle is most definitely not fresh. Pale Golden and not quite clear color, with minimal white head. Strong, sweet aroma of ripe fruit, apples, pears. Smells like a remarkably pale barley wine. Flavor is 180 from that though: strong, bitter hop flavors of pine sap. Reading from the labels, 88 IBUs is not necessarily all that much for an 11.6% double IPA, given the amount of residual sugar that usually comes alone with a beer of these proportions. And yeah, this sure is sweet. But you absolutely taste the alpha bitterness, which combats the malt sweetness rather than harmonizes with it. If the aroma is underwhelming, the flavor just falls flat for me. Interesting? Maybe. Good? Nah. Would it be improved by being served fresh? Anything's possible, but I'm unlikely to bother to find out.

Hazy, golden appearance. Two-fingered, frothy head that does not want to collapse. Aroma is dank, peaches, grilled hamburgers and potato salad. It definitely has a harshness to it. Sticky mouthfeel. The finish is long and bitter. There is some floral notes to it as it sits in the glass. Salty. When drinking this beer you can tell its percentage. But i think it will mellow out alot as it sits while i drink it. Thanks Nick Reid for going to the brewery to get it for me.
