Pours an auburn tinged brown. Somewhat opaque, but when held to the light, its more just cloudy. one finger tan head dissipates leaving a thin layer of velvety off-white foam on the beer. That thin layer has excellent retention.

Aroma smells likes rye bread, dark fruits - somewhat sour - and some earthy notes with a spicy yeast note coming through as well.

Taste is initially very ready - rye bred, pumpernickel and sourdough. Then you get this nice dark fruit array washing over the palate - plum, prune, and raisins all come through. No hops really come through at any point here and there is no bitterness. Spicy notes on the finish may be the rye really packing through and lingering. Dry spicy finish.

Feel is light, smooth, and drinkable in spite of a flavor profile punching above its weight. Moderate carbonation.

Overall this was a surprisingly good beer. Admittedly I didn't know how old it was - and I still don't - but it was a really enjoyable beer. I'd actually drink this one again. As for the style, I don't have any other experience to compare it to, but based on the guidelines it seems to do an admirable job.

Poured from 22-ounce "bomber" into a proper straight-sided mug. Very attractive in appearance: chestnut brown color, deep tan highlights, and a substantial light tan head that leaves a bunch of sticky lacing as it recedes. Malty aromas and flavors as expected. Dried fruit (prune, raisin), caramel, and dark bread up front, with some not-so-subtle sourness and lots of earthy spiciness. Lots of body, very satisfying. Rather long-lasting finish, with quite a bit of spicy bitterness and fruity sourness lingering on the palate. Overall, one helluva good beer.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a brown colored body with a lighter hazier looking reddishness around the edges, two finger white foamy head that dies and leaves some foamy clingy lacing in its wake. The smell had spicy rye, smokey, malty, fruity yeasty sort of hops, intricate in a way but different than other beers I’ve had in my life. The taste is spicy yeasty flavoring that dominates but lets in the rye and the fruit combine and coming through in a smoky way, smoky yeasty aftertaste, slightly dry yet fruity and some light rye in the finish. The palate is about a medium, sessionable - maybe. Carbonation is good to me. Overall, I say good for the most part and worthy of more pours.

Rogue Roguenbier Rye Ale, 5.5% ABV, 25 IBU. Pours medium viscosity and light black, with a one finger tan head that left decent lacing. Nose is sweetness and rye, taste is sweet rye, with some breadiness, and no notable bitterness. Excellent mouthfeel and overall excellent. Very drinkable, going down fast. I always expect rye to be bitter but this sure isn't - very nice.

Bottle to point glass. Appearance: muddy water brown. Small head with grey-white color. Very different look.
Aroma: rye is apparent, but weak in strength.
Taste: malty, brown sugar, bread, faint touch of cacao.
Feel: a touch flat and watery, but easy drinking.

Pours a dark amber with a tan head with good retention.

Smells of floral hops, sweet malt, and earthy yeast.

Bright citrus and floral hops followed by nutty sweet malt with bread and caramel. Finishes dry and earthy.

From notes taken 03/23/16:

Looks like root beer in every way, from the deep copper brown clarity to the apparent high, prickly carbonation and the fizzy, foamy, medium-retention tan head. Mild vegetal aromas, some light spicy, phenolic, rubbery, and estery notes, caramel suggestions. To the taste, incredibly metallic and phenolic throughout, some spice, some earthiness, mildly sweet/tart, nice roasty, smokey, almost meaty finish and aftertaste. Subtle peppery retro-olfaction. Medium-bodied, packed with creamy, velvety smooth suds, tingly only for the first second or so of each sip, gulp, or quaff. Comparable in different ways to a Scotch Ale, or a Belgian Dark, among others.
