Fresh Roast BrownFresh Roast Brown
Notes: Formerly Rogue Farms Fresh Roast

A dark, bold, roasty ale reminiscent of fresh-brewed coffee. Just imagine that smell of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air early in the morning.

This was poured into a mug. The appearance was a pure dark brown color with a slim quarter finger’s worth of foamy lacing appearing after the head died off. The smell had a nice roasty nutty smooth milk chocolate with a creamy coffee glazing. It smells very well done. The taste was mostly sweet smooth, rich and nutty with a super nice entrancing nutty sweet smooth aftertaste leading to a sticky finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a nice smooth sweet glazing spreading over my tongue. I’d say good sessionability. Overall, this was a nice brown ale I would have again.

One of the joys of home brewing is to enjoy a brew or two (or 5) on brew day. What to drink on bottling day? I had a 650 mL bottle of Rouge Fresh Roast sitting around, thought I'd give it a go; by myself I might add.
Poured out of the bottle, into a pint glass, everything about it screams brown. A modest tan head dissipates but retains quite well as a creamy film, with patches of lacing clinging to the glass.
In the nose, there is a moderate sweetness from the brown malts, light to medium roast, as well as a dark fruit quality-I'm thinking raisins or prunes dipped with a touch of alcohol. Furthermore, there is a light scent of coffee roast as well as a strong helping of nuts- I'm thinking almonds.
There are several aspects of the taste that remind me of a Porter or lighter stout. There is a mellow and soft smoothness to its roasted malt flavor that is pleasant; I guess this is what they mean by a quiet drink? There is a moderate coffee roast that adds bitterness. In the background there is a light and sweet creaminess. Other flavors include brown bread, nuts, and a bold earthy hops bite. Medium bodied and very drinkable.
I feel like brown ale is an overlooked style that can often be underrated. I like this one. It is complex and understated at the same time.

A: liked the bottle.. Poured, we
Are talking black, slight red hues, nice tan head that dissipates slowly. S: strange. Slightly off putting. It's metallic and not what I would expect. Weaker for the beer. T: great! It's so fresh, lives
up to the name. Barley that is toasted but light. Nice flavor. F: pretty smooth, no Guinness, but its not a stout. A nitro on this would be magical. O: I think Rogue is somewhat underrated. Quality beers like this will put them back on the map.

The aroma was not as pronounced as I'd expected, but this was a smooth and balanced brew. A solid and subtle malt backbone highlighted by an also subtle taste of roasted coffee. Some may find the subtlety as a knock, but I think it makes for a smooth drink and does not overpower. Delicious with a piece of chocolate cake.

22oz bomber into a wine glass.

A: Nearly-opaque black with deep ruby-brown accents along the edges. 1/4" Khaki head recedes very quickly with little-to-no retention or lacing.

S: Coffee, milk chocolate, hints of booze are the big three. Vanilla is present, along with a subtle lactose note.

T: Really mimics the nose. More milk chocolate, spiked with booze. Surprising with such a low-ABV brew. Cane sugar. Vanilla in the background with that very same lactose note. Black coffee is present throughout, albeit of the weak variety.

M: Thin & oily. Moderate carb. Goes down pretty quick & slick.

O: This brew is pretty quaffable despite it's shortcomings. I'd like it to be a bit heavier on the palate, although the overall creaminess helps. Not a bad breakfast beer.

A good if slightly bitter brown. Reminds me more of a porter. It's good. I'd have it again
